Walk above Messimy

Loop via the Piragoy orientation table from Messimy
This circuit crosses the meadows and woods of the first foothills of the Monts du Lyonnais. It leads to the Piragoy viewpoint, which offers a view of Messimy and the villages and crops of the Piémont des Monts du Lyonnais, and on a clear day, a beautiful panorama of the Alps and the Pilat Massif.
The Yzeron Waterfall
Starting from Messimy, on the outskirts of Lyon, this long loop takes you to the small Yzeron waterfall, passing through the hilltop village of Chateauvieux, the Py-Froid viewpoint and the dolmen in the Faix woods.
Around the Bois d'Arnaud
A varied hike (wide path, trail, partly in the woods, partly in the middle of fields), fairly short but with some elevation gain.
Circular Rontalon and Thurins from Saint-Laurent-d'Agny
Starting from the Saint-Vincent Chapel in the commune of Saint-Laurent-d'Agny, this hike allows you to discover the landscapes of the Monts du Lyonnais foothills, market gardens, orchards, meadows and woods. On a clear day, it also offers beautiful views of the Jura and the Alps.

I will take you on a route between Chaponost and Brignais to see some ancient remains of the Gier Aqueduct, built almost 2,000 years ago.
The main difficulty of the route is its relative length.
Around Saint-Laurent d'Agny
A day's hike along pleasant wooded paths around Saint-Laurent d'Agny with a break in front of the superb chapel dedicated to Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers.
Circular Thurins via Grand-Croix, Les Bruyères and Croix des Barons
This lovely hike takes you through the valleys of the Garon and Artilla rivers. From Thurins, the circular route passes through the hamlet of Jaricot and La Grand-Croix before descending to Les Bruyères. It crosses the hamlet of Julin, then crosses the Garon before climbing up the opposite slope. On the ridge, at the Croix des Barons, it swings over to La Burlière, crosses the Artilla and, via the Bois du Bacha, reaches the hamlet of La Grande Côte and then the village of Thurins.
From Rontalon to the Signal de Saint-André-la-Côte
Starting from Rontalon, this circular route takes you up a series of gentle climbs to the Signal de Saint-André and its orientation tables. The return journey follows the Rhône/Loire watershed, taking an old railway line and following the Rontalon botanical trail.
This route is a variation of the "Between Saint-André-la-Côte and Rontalon" route.
Loop between Rontalon and Chaussan
A beautiful loop through the forests and meadows surrounding the villages of Rontalon and Chaussan.
The path sometimes runs along the edge of the valley, offering beautiful views of the Alps, weather permitting!
The Sentier de Sacuny trail
In addition to being a nice hike, this circuit is interesting because throughout the trail signs provide educational information on the fauna and flora, tree species etc. It also helps hikers discover the local agricultural heritage that is everywhere so close to Lyon.
Rontalon - Saint-Andre-la-Côte - la Croix Forest circuit
This beautiful route offers views of the Alps, including Mont Blanc, and the Cantal. There are orientation tables near Saint-André-la-Côte
You can shorten the hike by going directly to the Signal Saint-André without passing through Saint-André-la-Côte.
Chaponost Aqueduct Loop at the Étang du Boulard
A pleasant walk through the streets, along the Étang du Boulard and the countryside near Chaponost.
Starting near the aqueduct, you can discover these superb Gallo-Roman remains.
The Yzeron valley from Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux
A long walk through the forest and across fields on either side of the Yzeron valley. Quite a few small climbs and descents, some of which are a little steep (at least one climb is too difficult for mountain bikers)

Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux - Haute Bruyère
This fairly easy circuit from Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux will take you on a pleasant trail mainly in the forest. If the weather is clear, the view from the Plat Saint-Romain plateau offers a panoramic view of the Alps.
The Dolmen path
This path is very pleasant in the Autumn, with a magnificent view of the monts d'Or, Lyon and the Rhone valley.
This route can be extended in the direction of Yzeron or Thurin.

From orchards to forests in Thurins
This circular route above Thurins, the raspberry capital, with its many market gardeners, will take you from orchards to shady forests.
This route combines well-shaded forest paths, orchards and local farms. There are a few steep climbs and descents, but none are particularly difficult.
Croix de Mathevière, Thurins Dam, Vallon du Garon in Thurins
Around the Vallon du Garon, between Yzeron and Thurins, a beautiful circular route allows you to alternate between forest trails and fruit orchards, while enjoying the Thurins Dam for a refreshing break (under the trees, as swimming is prohibited) or a picnic.
From Chaussan to Signal Saint-André
This route starting from Chaussan will take you to the Signal Saint-André viewpoint, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Rhône valley and the Monts du Lyonnais, not to mention a superb view (in good weather) of the Alps.This is a fairly easy route, suitable for families, but can be muddy when it rains. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially in the woods.

A simple, often shaded circular trail, allowing you to discover the wine-growing landscape of the village of Chaussan and its woods. The trail can be muddy during rainy periods.
Around Chaussan
Get some fresh air and exercise with this 100% rural hike, which offers beautiful panoramic views over much of the route. It allows you to appreciate the dynamism of local agricultural activity (fruit, vegetables, livestock, etc.) and admire a large tree house.

This is an easy walk, best done in the cool of the evening in summer as it is a very sunny area.

Crêt de Py-Froid starting from Châteauvieux
Beautiful views of Lyon, Pilat, the Monts du Lyonnais and, with a bit of luck, as far as Mont Blanc.
The chapel is sometimes open at weekends and is well worth a visit.
A loop starting from Vaugneray
This hike alternates between forests, meadows and beautiful views of the Rhône valley and the Alps, mainly on paths and small roads. There are no technical difficulties, just a few steep slopes.
The Monts du Lyonnais around Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid
A large loop, close to Lyon, through fields and forests and across the vast grounds of the Château de Saint-Bonnet. The Visorando app may be useful on certain sections that have been modified from the original route.

Varied itinerary: Forest on the climb toward the Crêt de Py Froid then at the start of the descent. The landscape opens out on the descent, becoming more rural. A little walking on the road.
Route around Saint-Genis-les-Ollières
A countryside hike on the outskirts of the city. An easy, almost flat route, ideal for family outings. It allows you to discover the Ratier, Méginand and Ribes streams. It offers some pretty views of the Monts du Lyonnais. It also features a "Jeux de regards" activity along the Ribes.
The two forts in Irigny
A half-day walk with very little elevation gain on the plateau west of Irigny between the Forts de Champvillard and Montcorin, passing through Charly and Vourles.
Grézieu-la-Varenne loop at the Col de la Luère
A lovely ten-kilometre loop starting from Grézieu-la-Varenne. Mainly in the forest, it takes you up the legendary Col de la Luère.
The Yzeron valley between Francheville and Craponne
Woods and river in the city! It's difficult to find an area entirely covered in trees that is both close to Lyon and large enough for several hours of walking.The paved sections are very limited; you mainly walk in a steep-sided valley, along the water's edge, namely the Yzeron stream, and under the constant canopy of trees. This makes it ideal during hot weather.The route is mostly flat, except for the loop on Findez hill.For those who dislike tarmac and don't want to go too far, this valley nestled between Craponne and Francheville is a good choice.
La Vaure
This is a pleasant walk around Chassagny and Montagny, passing the Château de Chassagny and the Château de La Vaure, as well as a pretty footbridge over the Mornantet.

Islands, Jaricot and Ciselande sandbanks in Vernaison
This walk will take you through the agricultural plateau and then along the banks of the old Rhône. The restored Jaricot and Ciselande floodplains are home to beavers.
Yzeron - Lakes and ridges
Loop trail starting from Yzeron, through varied landscapes. The trail passes around the small dam lake at the foot of Yzeron and then, at the end of the hike, along the Lac d'Yzeron, whose new facilities were inaugurated on 19/07/14.
Circular from Yzeron via La Croix de Pars, Col de Malval and Les Rivoires
This beautiful circular walk takes place in the wooded hills north of Yzeron. From the village of Yzeron, the fully signposted route passes by Lac du Ronzey and, after crossing a few valleys, reaches Croix de Pars, then the ruins of the old Chapelle Saint-Clair. After a long stretch through the woods, it reaches the Col de Malval, goes around the Crêt Chevreau and descends to the hamlet of Soupat. At the Crêt de Piraluron, it continues towards La Goutte Chérine, Les Esselards, Le Trossin and La Roche, from where it reaches the Crêt de la Madone before descending to Yzeron.

A beautiful circular walk starting from the village of Yzeron, alternating between forest paths and clear views of Lyon and the Alps. In good weather, there is an exceptional view of the Alps: you can easily recognise Mont Blanc, the Belledonne massif, the Chartreuse, the Vercors and even (for those in the know) the Meije!
Part of the route follows the old (buried) aqueduct of Yzeron, which supplied Lyon with water in Gallo-Roman times (there are very informative signs along the route).

Izeron circular via Saint-Laurent de Vaux

Around and in the Combe d'Allier
A long, bucolic walk on the plateau of Saint-Andéol-le-Château and Saint-Jean-de-Toulas, interspersed with valleys and streams. Long but easy with little elevation gain.
Between Saint-André-la-Côte and Rontalon
This loop offers pleasant views of the plateau to the south-west of the Lyon conurbation. In good visibility, the Pre-Alps and Alps can be seen in the distance.
The stairs of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon
Sainte-Foy is a commune with rugged terrain. To see this for yourself, simply walk up and down the many staircases. So I've put together a short route with six staircases to climb. What could be better? To be done at a leisurely pace or as a trail run.

Physically demanding climb between km 3 and 6.

A pleasant hike in the sunshine, perfect outside of summer! Superb views in three directions. Numerous paths but also small tarmac roads with very little traffic. A lovely 3-hour walk in the Monts du Lyonnais (estimated time for regular walkers).

Starting from the Fort de Lyon Saint-Just, 500 metres from the Saint Just funicular, this is a half-nature, half-city walk. It passes through several parks and the pretty little Razes valley, followed by a nature trail along the Thiện Minh Pagoda. There is a beautiful view of Lyon and the Alps from the Esplanade Lichfield in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon.

De Saint-Maurice-sur-Dargoire, boucle des ruisseaux Bezançon
This circular hike in the Monts du Lyonnais between the Rhône and Loire rivers takes place in a little-visited and rather secret area around the Bezançon valleys and its tributaries, including the Grand Bezançon and Petit Bezançon, passing through a few isolated hamlets. It allows you to discover three arches, remnants of the Roman aqueduct of the Gier, and a high bridge pier of a railway line, intended to connect Rive-de-Gier to Mornant, whose construction was halted by the war of 1914. This route can be shortened to 23 km with an 800 m elevation gain by taking a shortcut (see practical information).

This is a beautiful, easy walk along both sides of the Bozançon River, where this section of the valley is a succession of ancient terraces structured by low stone walls. A taste of Provence..

Going up the Bozançons
This varied circuit runs through the upper catchment area of the Grand and Petit Bozançon rivers, taking you along the banks of streams, up hillsides through orchards and, at times, offering unobstructed views of the Pilat mountain range.
Around the Bozançon
Walk around the Bozançon valley (and even the Bozançon rivers) with remains of Roman aqueducts, water mills, old railway tracks and old gold mines.
At Les Piles, you can continue up the Bozançon to the viaduct and return to Jurieux via the old railway line (an extra 2 hours).

You will pass by many of Lyon's must-see churches, monuments and theatres. You will climb up to Croix-Rousse through almost all of the traboules (covered passageways) on the hill. A truly peaceful route with virtually no cars.
