From the Signal de Saint-André to Saint-Martin-en-Haut

An easy route starting from the Signal de Saint-André car park, leading to Saint-Martin-en-Haut. The finish is in a park suitable for a picnic, but it is less than 300m from the centre of Saint-Martin with its many shops. Follow theGRP® des Monts du Lyonnais signposts from the Signal de Saint-André.

Description of the walk

Park in the Signal car park near the hamlet of Pierre Longue.

(S/E) Take the path opposite, which soon leads onto theGRP® Tour des Monts du Lyonnais. Take theGRP® on the left, pass close to the mast and, at a bend to the left, reach a crossroads of paths.

(1) Continue left along theGRP®, ignoring the paths branching off to the right or left at each junction. This will take you to the hamlet of Les Flaches.

(2) Go round this hamlet on the left, passing the farm in particular. You will then begin a very pleasant walk through the woodland.
As you emerge from the woodland, turn right onto the dirt track until you reach the D113, cross it, then pass through the farm buildings at Le Sapin.
Continue following the red and yellowGRP® markers. Reach the junction with the path leading to Moulin Bernard.

(3) Continue straight ahead on theGRP® to reach the houses at Les Fanges.

(4) Turn right and stay on theGRP® until you reach the junction with the botanical trail. Turn left onto this trail to end up in a park where there are a few tables where you can rest.
Enjoy the view of Saint-Martin-en-Haut.
Note: as the village centre is nearby, it is worth visiting.

(5) Return via the same route to reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

40% of the hike is through woodland and 60% on paths or roads with no shade: best done in dry weather in spring or autumn, in summer if it is not too hot, or in winter when there is a risk of icy paths (see photo).
Must-do on arrival in Saint-Martin: the La Verpillère nature and botanical trail.

A stunning view and a lovely spot at the signal.
Lovely free-range poultry at the farm after Les Flaches... but watch out for the two aggressive dogs running loose that come charging out of the farm!
At the junction near Le Rabut, we cross the new route of the Way of St James from Lyon to Le Puy.
The educational botanical trail is interesting, but the village of Saint Martin en Haut isn’t particularly interesting.

Thanks to this sun-drenched day, I was treated to a magnificent view upon reaching the Alpine ridge, with a vista over the surrounding plain and the Lyon metropolitan area.
I walked through a beautiful forest, currently partly bare, and on emerging, I was greeted by a panoramic view of the valleys and farms.
Finally, I explored the park and its botanical and geobiological trail, with a view of St-Martin-en-Haut.
Thank you to the author for this scenic route. Ly
