Departure from the Pollionnay-Valency bus stop, along the D70. A small carpool car park is available along the bus stop. See practical information for an alternative starting point.
No markings
(S/E) Cross the D70 at the pedestrian crossing and take the Passage du Portail uphill. Ignore the access to a house on the left and continue straight ahead through a narrow passage. At the crossroads that immediately follows, turn left.
Red + yellow markings
At the next intersection, turn right onto Chemin des Fourches Vieilles and climb uphill.
(1) When the road turns left, continue straight ahead on a path and follow a fence on your right. Climb slightly.
Red markings
(2) At the crossroads, turn left and climb up into the forest on a stony path. At the next crossroads (elevation 506), go straight ahead, ignore a path on the left and continue climbing. Soon you will find two parallel paths: they meet further on.
(3) At a crossroads, go straight ahead. At the next crossroads (not shown on the IGN map), continue straight ahead. Climb gently, keeping westward, and ignore any vague paths branching off to the sides. You will come out onto a wide path; follow it to the left and you will soon reach the Col de la Croix du Banc.
Red + yellow markings
(4) Then turn right twice on the tarmac. Next, turn left, pass a private car park on the right and descend straight ahead towards Sourcieux-les-Mines (signposted VTT25). After about 100 metres, at a fork, turn right (the path is not shown on the 1:25,000 map but appears when you zoom in). Go up to a T-junction.
(5) Go left, on fairly flat ground. Head north-northeast and ignore the paths branching off to the sides.
(6) At the crossroads, go straight ahead on a good, flat path (north-east; the purple line on the IGN map is not up to date). At the T-junction, turn left and go downhill. At the next junction (elevation 578), turn right. At a T-junction, turn right. Walk along a meadow on your left and you will come to a crossroads (signpost "Bois Charnay"; benches).
(7) Take the first right, Chemin de la Font Vivier, towards Grande Combe. At the first fork, veer left. At the second fork, keep right and climb slightly into the forest. Ignore the tracks on either side, descend slightly and arrive at a clearing where the path becomes stony (signpost).

(8) Then turn sharply right towards Jeu de Quilles. At the fork that appears shortly afterwards (not shown on the map), turn right and climb (follow the mountain bike signs). Further on, climb more gently, heading south, and you will arrive at the signpost for "Le Jeu de Quilles".
Red + Yellow Markings
(9) Continue straight ahead towards Larny. Descend gently and ignore the tracks on either side. At a clearly marked fork, veer right and descend slightly. At the crossroads that appears immediately, continue straight ahead downhill.
(10) Shortly afterwards, turn left (be careful to spot this turn-off). Immediately ignore a turn-off on the left and head east.
(11) At the "La Plaine" signpost, turn right towards Valency and descend slightly on a stony path. At a T-junction, turn right then left at the hairpin bend. Cross a stream and continue on a slight incline.
(2) At a junction taken at the start of the hike, continue straight ahead.
(1) You will come to a small road; follow it to the left and downhill. At the T-junction, turn left. After about 50 metres, turn right into a narrow passage. Continue straight ahead downhill and you will soon reach the bus stop and car park (S/E).
