(S/E) With your back to the Basilica, exit the esplanade, turn left and go down Rue Roger Radisson. At the bend opposite, take the path to the right of the stairs to the Gallo-Roman Museum, passing over the archaeological site of the Gallo-Roman Theatre (the theatre was built inthe 1st century BC).
At the bottom of the stairs, turn left and walk around the small park. At the park exit, turn right onto Rue de l'Antiquaille, walk up to Place de l'Abbé Larue, then turn left and walk down Rue de l'Abbé Larue. At the end, you will see an open gate leading to the Jardin des Curiosités, which offers a magnificent view of Lyon.
(1) Turn around, turn right onto Rue des Farges, continue along this street at the fork, then turn right onto the Montée du Gourguillon stairs and then right again onto the Montée des Épies stairs to reach the Saint-Georges Church at the bottom.
(2) Cross the Saône on the footbridge opposite and continue straight ahead to the Sofitel on the banks of the Rhône. Turn left onto Quai Gailleton until you reach Place Antonin Poncet, then turn left to reach Place Bellecour.
(3) Pass the statue of Henri IV, continue to the north-west corner of the square, continue along Rue de Colonel Chambonnet on the left, towards the Saône, then turn right onto Place Antonin Gourju. Turn right and pass under the archway on Rue des Templiers to reach Rue d'Amboise. Follow it to the right and turn left at the end.
Pass in front of the Théâtre des Célestins and its beautiful square and continue straight on along Rue Jean Fabre to reach Place des Jacobins. Walk along the square on the right and take Rue Confort almost opposite, which turns right. Continue straight on until you reach the Hôtel-Dieu (the porch to the left of the chapel leads to a peaceful garden. You can also visit the entire renovated former hospital).
(4) Continue left onto Rue Marcel-Gabriel Rivière, walk along the water jets and cross Place de la République straight ahead. At the end of the square, turn slightly right onto Rue Carnot, then, at the next crossroads, turn slightly left onto Rue Grolée.
Pass to the right of the Church of Saint-Bonaventure (14th-century Gothic façade and beautiful stained glass windows). Take Rue de la Bourse opposite the church and continue straight on to the Opera House. Walk along the back of the building, turn left onto Rue Joseph Serlin, then right to walk alongside the Town Hall and turn left onto Rue Puits Gaillot.
(5) Place des Terraux (Bartholdi Fountain), continue to the end of the square, turn right onto Rue Sainte-Marie, left onto Rue Sainte-Catherine, then right onto Rue Terme.
At No. 7 Rue Terme, the route takes you through traboules. They are all accessible; just press the door release button and remember to turn on the light if necessary. Almost every entrance has a sign indicating the existence of the traboule.
Take the first grey-door traboule (No. 7), press the door-opening button and go up the stairs to the top (it is not a dead end), exit and turn right to go down Place des Capucins, almost opposite on the other side of Rue des Capucins, and keep left on the square. The gate to the traboule is next to No. 5 Place des Capucins and is quite difficult to push open (remember to press the opening button each time). At the exit, turn left for 20 metres until you reach the door of No. 3-5 on the right-hand side of the street, and follow this traboule.
(6) At the exit, turn right (Rue René Leynaud) for 40 metres, then turn left into Passage Thiaffait, go up the stairs to Rue Bourdeau and turn right. After 50 metres, take the stairs on the left, walk along the wall on the right and turn left. Turn right onto Rue des Tables Claudiennes, then take the passageway on the left at No. 55. Exit the passageway onto Rue Imbert Colomès and continue through the next passageway opposite.
(7) Cross the Cour des Voraces and, at the exit, turn right, go down Place Colbert and take Rue Baudin almost opposite. Almost at the end of the street, turn right onto Place Bellevue, go around the square, walk along the wall and take Rue d'Austerlitz for about 20 metres. Go up the stairs on the left to reach Place de la Croix-Rousse.
(8) On this square, the Gros Caillou is a moraine carried by glaciers to Lyon 140,000 years ago
Continue 30 metres west and turn left onto Montée Saint-Sebastien, leaving the Reformed Church on your left, follow Place Colbert on your right and turn right onto Rue Lemot.
At the end, take the stairs on the left and, when you reach the bottom, take the stairs on the right and then turn right towards the Esplanade de la Grande-Côte. At the crossroads just at the end of this square, take Rue Jean Batiste Say on the left, then turn left onto Rue de Crimée. Go to the end of this street (but do not continue down the dead end), turn left onto Rue de Vauzelles, and after 20 metres, turn right into Parc Sutter. Turn left, go down to the bottom of the park, pass under the archway and, at the crossroads, take Rue de Flesselles opposite you to the end to arrive at Place Rouville (beautiful view of Lyon and Fourvière).
(9) Cross the street and continue uphill for a few dozen metres on the right, then enter the park on the left and head south to descend to Quai Saint-Vincent. Turn right and walk along the Saône to the Passerelle de l'Homme de la Roche.
(10) Take it and then follow Quai Pierre Scize to the left until you reach the Passerelle Saint-Vincent. Turn right onto Place Gerson, walk past the Église Saint-Paul and, at the end, turn left. At the crossroads, keep to the right to pass in front of the Gare Saint-Paul, then turn right.
(11) Continue left along the Maison Henri IV on Montée Saint-Barthélémy. After 300 metres, turn left down Montée du Garillan and, at the end, turn right onto Rue du Bœuf. Continue straight on to No. 27 Rue du Bœuf (on the left) and take the longest traboule in the historic district. At the end of the traboule, turn right onto Rue Saint-Jean, then left onto Rue de la Bombarde.
(12) Follow Quai Romain Rolland to the right. Turn right onto Avenue Adolphe Max and, at the end, turn right to arrive in front of Saint-Jean Cathedral. Cross Place Saint-Jean, turning left to follow Rue des Antonins. At the end, turn left onto Rue de la Bombarde, then right onto Rue du Bœuf and continue for 10 metres. Turn left onto Montée des Chazeaux.
(13) At the top, turn left onto Montée Saint-Barthélémy and, after 20 metres, turn right to enter Parc du Rosaire. Follow the path and climb up to reach Esplanade de Fourvière (S/E).
