Circular Thurins via Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux and Yzeron

Located in the Monts du Lyonnais, this circular route runs mainly through the woods of the Yzeron and Garon valleys. From Thurins, the trail climbs the hill separating the two valleys and descends to Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux. It climbs back up to the source of the Garon via Châteauvieux and Yzeron, then through the woods to Thurins. Along the route, take some time to visit the dolmen and chapel in Châteauvieux.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the town hall on Rue du Rampeau at the northern entrance to Thurins.

(S/E) Return to the car park entrance and walk up Rue du Rampeau on the left, following the yellow marked route. Pass two streets on the left and you will reach a crossroads where the slope becomes less steep.

(1) Leave the road that veers to the right and take a marked path opposite. It runs alongside an orchard, then descends to cross the Ruisseau de Vallière stream and, immediately afterwards, turns left and climbs, first through woods and then open terrain, where it joins a road at the Matillon farm. On the road, go around the farm on the left and continue straight ahead for 100 metres.
At the unmarked sign, ignore the road opposite and the one on the left. Climb to the right for 200 metres along the road towards Le Jaricot.

(2) At the Le Jaricot sign, leave the path on the left. Continue straight ahead towards "La Croisée des Chemins". At the fork at the entrance to the hamlet of Le Jaricot, take the lower path, which soon joins the upper path on the right. Continue straight ahead. After 100 m, ignore the road climbing to the left towards Le Rat and continue to a fork. Take the left fork; the right fork leads to Servigny. The road continues along a path that leads to a crossroads.

(3) At the La Croisée des Chemins sign, ignore the paths to the left and right. Continue straight ahead (north) towards "Haute Bruyère" on a level path through the woods, then down a muddy and stony descent. Further on, you will come to the Route de la Bruyère. Follow it downhill, go around a right-hand bend and you will arrive at a crossroads at the entrance to the hamlet of Haute Bruyère.

(4) At the Haute Bruyère sign, leave the road opposite. Take the path on the left towards "Piragoy" for 60 metres. When you reach a long building, turn left onto an ascending path marked with a yellow marker on the right on a fallen tree trunk. After 500 metres of climbing, you will come to a road.

(5) At the Piragoy sign, cross the road and take the path towards "Goutte-Lais". The road reappears 100 m further on. Follow it for 50 m and then leave it on the right at a bend. The path passes a high point (altitude 574), then descends along the edge of a wood for 150 m, where it reaches a fork. Take the right-hand branch marked in yellow and head for the Goutte-Lais stream.

(6) At the Goutte-Lais sign, continue downhill towards "Pierre Folle" to reach the Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux road.

(7) At the Pierre Folle sign, take the road on the left towards "La Plantée", pass the hairpin bend and, at the top of the hill, you will arrive at a crossroads.

(8) At the La Plantée sign, head towards "Bois du Faix" opposite via the climb marked with a dead end road sign.

(9) At the Le Bois du Faix sign, turn left towards "Le Dolmen".

(10) At the Le Dolmen sign (to visit, climb the path on the right for about 30 metres), follow "La Chapelle de Châteauvieux" opposite. Continue along the marked path and then the road to reach the 11th-century Châteauvieux Chapel, built in pure Romanesque style with three lime trees planted under Sully.

(11) At the La Chapelle de Châteauvieux sign, head towards "Châteaux Vieux". Stay on the road for 100 m and go straight across the crossroads. Continue for another 100 m until you reach an intersection.

(12) At the Châteauvieux sign, turn right towards "Les Rochers de Py Froid", ignoring the paths going up to the left. After 1 km, you will reach a crossroads (altitude 772 m).

(13) At the Les Rochers de Py Froid sign, take the "La Modérat" direction on the left and leave the path on the right (north) towards the Py Froid Reservoir.

(14) At the La Modérat sign, ignore the path that descends to the left and continue straight ahead towards "Le Réservoir de Py Froid". After about 500 m, you will reach a road.

(15) At the Le Réservoir de Py Froid sign, go straight ahead towards "Le Progrès". After 200 m, you will reach an X-shaped junction with the D25.

(16) At the Le Progrès sign, head towards "Le Planil" by crossing the D25 diagonally. Turn slightly right and take the Chemin du Planil opposite until you reach an intersection.

(17) At the Le Planil sign, continue straight ahead towards "Le Petit Pré". Pass a campsite and, at the crossroads in front of the cemetery, go down the street on the right. After 30 metres, join the Route de Saint-Martin en Haut, D122, and go up it on the left for 100 metres to reach an intersection

(18). At the Le Petit Pré sign, ignore the path on the right towards Plan d'Eau du Ronzey and the D222 on the left. Continue straight ahead on the road towards "Le Plat", following the yellow markings, until you reach an intersection.

(19) At the Le Plat sign, leave the road that veers left and continue straight ahead on a wide stony path towards "Clairière Des Brosses". Be careful: 100 m before the small pass marked with a sign for "Clairière Des Brosses" (altitude 872 m), look for a path on the left leading into the woods with two crosses, yellow and red, on a shrub (altitude 855 m).

(20) Take this marked path a little further on from a white T in a blue label. After 100 m, follow the signposting by taking the path on the left and leaving the one opposite. It crosses several paths, but the blue signposting is clearly visible and leaves no doubt as to the direction to follow. Leave the forest and walk along the edge of it, crossing the D122 road (elevation 784).

(21) Cross it and take the small road towards Le Pinet. Pass the last farm located on a bend and continue downhill towards the Route du Barrage D628 (elevation 731).

(22) Cross this road and follow a path that descends to the right, still marked with a white T on a blue label. Cross the Goutte de Bellevue stream and, almost level, enter the woods. Go around a pond, leave a blocked path ascending to the right and descend to the left. At the fork, leave the red-marked path on the left and follow the one marked with a white T opposite. 100 m further on, ignore the path descending in the opposite direction on the left. After a straight stretch, enter the hamlet of Le Baillard (spelled Le Bayard on the map). At the crossroads, take the short descent on the right and join another road.

(23) At the Le Bayard sign, turn left towards the "Bois de la Martinière". At the end of the hamlet, continue along a path that leads to an intersection.

(24) Note a small wooden sign on a fence opposite a path on the right marked with yellow and blue labels with a white T. Leave this signpost towards "Bois de la Martinière" and continue straight ahead, following the direction of Thurins engraved on an old wooden sign. The unmarked forest path winds through the forest for 600 m before reaching an intersection.

(25) Descend to the right (triangular sign for bicycles) to a path (altitude 535 m). Leave the horizontal branch on the right and take the one descending to the left. A little further on, ignore a path ascending to the left and descend to the right. Cross orchards and, at a crossroads, reach a road flanked by a cross.

(26) At the La Croix des Barons sign, continue straight ahead towards "Le Plat du Mont" marked in yellow.

(27) At the Le Plat du Mont sign, leave the path on the left and continue along the road towards La Herse.

(28) At the "La Herse" sign, turn left towards "Thurins le Bourg". The road crosses the Garon on a pretty stone bridge and then climbs up to a crossroads. Take the steep climb on the left. At the next intersection, turn right onto Chemin de la Plaine to reach an intersection with Chemin du Mathy.

(29) At the Thurins le Bourg sign, take the left turn. Leave La Rue de la Poste and cross to the right through an archway. Cross the narrow Place de Verdun, which leads to Rue du 8 Mai 1945. Go up to the left, cross the street and walk along the main façade of the church, then follow a footpath on the right that passes in front of the town hall and leads back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The route is marked along its entire length except for points (24) to (26) and (29) to (E).

Worth a visit

At the Dolmen sign (10), take a short detour of about 50 metres to the right to take a look at the dolmen.
In Châteauvieux (11), a Romanesque votive chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist was built in the 11th century. In very good condition, it has a simple nave with three bays and pillars with internal reinforcements. The slightly offset choir has a square apse. To the right of the entrance, you can see a holy water font with two white stone basins. Three old lime trees, over 400 years old, guard the entrance. A Byzantine cross marks the corner of the cemetery.

Hello and thank you for posting these walks!
A pleasant hike, but too much tarmac for my liking.
It's also a shame to pass so close to Saint Laurent de Vaux without stopping there. It's also a shame to pass so close to Py Froid without climbing it...
With a few minor adjustments to the route, it could be really great.
Thank you.
