Description of the walk

Park opposite the Carmel.

(S/E) When you leave your car, continue south and turn right into the first street (Chemin du Planil) and continue for 200 metres.

(1) Take the street on your left that descends towards the valley. Continue straight downhill, ignoring the first and second roads on your right. At the hamlet of La Cornelière, go straight ahead at the right-hand bend

(2) At the end of the hamlet, take the narrow path that descends to the right. It leads you downhill through the woods to the Barrage lake.

(3) Follow the small path on your right that goes around it. It will take you to the other side of the dam, which you cannot cross. Then continue straight ahead for twenty metres.

(4) Take the path that climbs up to your right along a small stream, which will take you to the hamlet of La Mure.
Take the road on the right and follow it for about 300 metres.

(5) In the bend in the woods, take the small path that climbs to the left. Walk alongside the cherry trees and enter the woods. Ignore the paths that branch off to the left and right. Leave the woods and you will find yourself in the middle of meadows, before arriving at the Biternay farm.

(6) Take the road to the left. Follow the road and ignore the road that branches off to the left towards the Bellevue farm.

(7) At the crossroads, 300 metres further on, take the small road that climbs to the right towards Le Pinay (marked as a path on the IGN map). Cross the hamlet of Le Pinay and continue to the junction with the D122.

(8) Cross the road and take the path opposite you that climbs through the fields towards the forest.
Follow this path into the woods. Ignore the first path on the left and then on the right, keeping a north-westerly direction.

(9) Take the second path on the left that climbs slightly.

(10) At the small pass, take the path (markedGR®) that branches off to the right. At the first intersection, be sure to turn left. The path markedGR® and Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle will take you to the Col des Brosses, marked by a wooden cross.

(11) Take the path on the right and follow it until you reach a paved road, which you take to your left.
At the first intersection, turn right. Go around the hamlet of Tiollet by turning right and continue to the pine forest and the pumping station.

(12) Follow the path on the left into the pine forest. Continue to Lac du Ronzey (ignore the two forks on the right).
On the other side of the lake (which you can walk along on the left or right), a path leads you to the centre of the village, which you reach by continuing straight ahead.

(13) At the main square in the village, take the road to the right towards Lyon and return to your car (S/E).

Practical information

We parked the car in the parking spaces along the Grande Rue opposite the Carmel d'Yzeron. There are also plenty of parking spaces a little further up, on the Chemin du Planil.

Refreshments and restaurants/cafés are available in Yzeron.

We strongly recommend using a 1:25,000 map or the extract provided by Visorando.

As mentioned in other reviews, the directions for this route are really poor.
There are too many opportunities to get lost, which I unfortunately did several times... Especially at the beginning.

A beautiful hike on a very sunny Saturday. I found there to be a lot of asphalt, but in areas with little or no traffic: I only came across one cyclist. However, there was a steep descent at the start, followed by a very long climb in full sun after the dam. Arriving at the lake in the early afternoon to find it crowded with people was a shock after the peace and quiet of the rest of the trip. I wondered if it might be better to do the trip in the opposite direction to discover and appreciate the landscapes that you always have your back to otherwise... (the arrival would certainly be a bit "steep", but I think it would be worth it).

It was a beautiful day for this short hike, and we enjoyed lunch with a stunning view of the landscape... The Alps were clearly visible on the horizon... Luckily, we had the hike mapped out on the app, otherwise it would have been difficult to follow at times. A beautiful, accessible 14-kilometre hike...

A beautiful sunny day for this hike through varied landscapes with panoramic views of the Alps. It's a shame that the route starts with a steep descent: not ideal for cold muscles!

A very beautiful hike that combines a bit of every landscape and type of trail, with a reasonable elevation gain (closer to 530 metres at the end). One or two mountain bikes, a few hikers, some sections on asphalt, but nothing too bothersome.

And an incredible view from the cross at point 10! (despite the clouds at this time of year)
Recommended for everyone, regardless of age.

Be sure to wear good shoes, as the humidity and dead leaves can make it slippery. I know someone who slipped and landed on their bottom on a mossy rock.

A beautiful and enjoyable hike in a varied landscape with wide horizons and a few small hamlets. There are some steep climbs in the summer sun (pt 8, the path that climbs through the meadows with blackberries to pick to help you on your way!), but there are also many refreshing sections through forests and undergrowth. The pretty setting of the Thurins dam lake is very well equipped for picnics, with benches, tables and barbecues to use in the cool shade of the trees.
At point 2, we followed the trail down to the dam, ignoring the GPS route, which took us down a trail on the right that was inaccessible because it was overgrown with grass and not marked. We arrived at the same place near the dam lake. At point 11, at the cross, turn right. Very pleasant trail gently downhill through a dense pine forest.
Return via the village square (tourist office, cafés, restaurants and a bakery (unfortunately closed when we visited in August :-( where we had tasted their delicious raspberry tartlets on a previous visit!
Well done for completing this route in the time allowed.

Two sections may be muddy if hiking after heavy rain the day before or the day before the day before. Beautiful views of the Alps.

A pleasant route with varied landscapes, lots of small roads but very little traffic, which we enjoyed after a spell of rain. However, the descent from the Yzeron path to the Thurins dam was in water...!
Thank you for this route.

We had a bed and breakfast at La Ferme du Thiollet (north-northeast of point "12"), so that was our starting point.
