Circular route between Vaugneray and Pollionnay

A circular loop of around two hours on the southern slopes of the Monts du Lyonnais with fairly varied scenery. A bit of a workout on the climb, and the paths are too uneven for a pushchair

Description of the walk

Park on Rue du Recret (an old Roman road) or Chemin des Quatre-Vents in the hamlet of Les Gaches, which is part of Grézieu-la-Varenne.

(S/E) Cross the D24 – take care as many drivers travel at excessive speeds. Immediately turn right onto the small tarmac road opposite (Chemin de Ponce). Head towards the two farms.

(1) Leave the tarmac and take the path leading down to the left (see photo). Follow it along the fields until you reach a path running perpendicular at the top of the fields.

(2) Take this path uphill to the left. You will soon enter the forest. Cross the Bouillon stream and the road to reach the Bouillon farm.

(3) Take the small path that climbs to the right alongside the farm (see photo). Pass above the farm. Follow a fairly steep climb to reach a new right-angled junction.

(4) Turn right onto the path and continue to the hamlet of Les Béchères. Stay on this path until you reach the road at the top of the village of Pollionnay.
Alternative route here: continue the climb to the left to reach the Col de la Luère. Descend via theGRP® Tour des Monts du Lyonnais to La Croix du Ban. Take the path on the right which descends towards Pollionnay and joins the road at the top of the village.

(5) Turn right and begin a fairly steep descent. Pass through the hamlet of Lamure. Continue on until, after passing the pond (cross), you reach Les Presles.

(6) Take the dirt track leading down to the right (see photo), follow it through the hamlets of La Sigodière and La Quinsonnière until you reach the D70.

(7) Walk along the D70 on the right for 250 m, taking great care with the traffic. At the first left-hand bend, take the dirt track that climbs back up to the hamlet of Les Gaches. Turn right to reach the car park on Rue de Recret (S/E).

There aren’t really any water points along this path, but there are plenty of farms selling fresh produce. A special mention goes to Ferme de Lamure and its friendly owners.

A route of mixed interest: some lovely sections through the forest and others with views over the town, interspersed with numerous tarmac sections of less scenic appeal! I followed the GPX track, which is reliable (so I can’t comment on the reliability of the description). Elevation gain of 350 m according to my Garmin watch. The starting point is also open to debate; personally, I prefer to start with an ascent and finish with a descent.

This hike is best avoided during the week at the moment due to the constant stream of lorries unloading soil from new construction sites in and around Lyon... otherwise, there are beautiful landscapes and flower-filled embankments. There are also plenty of tarmac paths. In short, there are other lovely hikes in the area...

A lovely walk on a sunny autumn’s day. No particular difficulties, but I used the Géoportail website to check the route description at the various junctions.
A slight discrepancy regarding the duration: “Circular route of about two hours” is noted in the description, whereas “Average duration: 3 hours” is stated elsewhere. And it took us 2½ hours.

There were lots of flowers on the embankments at the start of spring: it was lovely! No difficulties encountered

The walk is fine for the first part, but after that it gets a bit too urban.
Otherwise, the description is very poor on paper! I had to stop numerous times, even though there were much simpler ways to describe the route. For example, saying: ‘At La Croix, turn right’ instead of describing hamlets whose names you never see, so you don’t know if you’re on the right track or not.
There are lots of crossroads where you don’t know whether to take the path or not.
As a result, it ruined my walk.
I’d much rather go there without directions and find my own way than follow a so-called circular route where you have to ask yourself questions every five minutes.
I’ve done other hikes with Visorando that were much better.
Kind regards, Rose G.
