Landes walks

A very fine circuit, which can be modified to suit the length and type of path required. You follow the Huchet stream, a small river that flows from the Étang de Léon to the ocean. Spectacular flora and beautiful colours at the mouth of this walk through the Landes Amazon. Author's note 24 June 2024. Walk described on Visorando in 2019, done several times since then, but despite the work done on the footbridge, it is still closed. The forest rangers I met in October 2023 gave me no information about the reopening of the Nasse footbridge. The loop described in 2019 is therefore still not feasible in 2024. A return trip is therefore necessary. I recommend that you then drive to the mouth of the Huchet stream and follow the stream upstream, as the scenery is sublime depending on the time of day.

This route offers a wide variety of terrain, including streams, sunny stretches and shaded areas.

Hike a stone's throw from Biscarrosse town centre. Short route on trails with a few sandy sections. Please note that there are a few hundred metres along the road. This trail takes you around the Petit Étang de Biscarrosse lake on shaded paths.

A challenging circuit offering high-quality and varied sections. Full of contrasts, it takes you from the banks of the Étang de Moliets to the peaks of a few hills, from the lush vegetation of the wetlands to the perfectly smooth green of the golf course.

A short hike, mostly shaded, which can be done on foot or by mountain bike/hybrid bike. Several viewpoints over the Étang de Cazaux and Sanguinet on the section running alongside the lake. A quiet and very relaxing route.

This 7.5 km circuit, fully signposted, allows you to discover the twelve remarkable trees of the municipality of Labenne in the south of the Landes. Poplars, cork oaks and different types of pines, some of which are over 150 years old. There is an explanatory panel for each remarkable tree. This walk also allows you to immerse yourself in the Landes forest with its pines, eucalyptus trees, oaks and all the local vegetation (arbutus, broom, gorse, etc.). During this walk, you will pass behind Labenne Zoo where you may see lemurs or kangaroos. Please note that at the (8), you will need to climb a tuc (sand hill), which may be difficult for some people. Please respect nature (no picking) and be very vigilant about the risk of forest fires. Several of the plots you will be crossing are private, but the owners have given their permission.

This family-friendly walk will take you along the banks of the Adour and its alluvial plain. ¹ The alluvial plains are vast floodplains frequented by herds of semi-wild horses. The area is rich in wildlife, including storks, egrets and grey herons. This walk follows the old towpath along the banks of the Adour and can also be done by mountain bike. It has recently been tarmacked from the start to Saubusse. As mentioned above, as the alluvial plains are floodplains, it is best not to walk there after heavy rain.

A walk along a beautiful, well-maintained path by the lake.

The proposed route crosses the state-owned forests north of Biscarosse Plage on the border between the Gironde and Landes departments, and takes you along the shores of Lake Cazaux-Parentis. This route will allow you to discover the different faces of the Landes dunes It takes you along sections of hiking trails marked by the Biscarrosse Tourist Office and a section ofthe GR®8. Author's note: this route was posted online in 2018 after being tested. As I am no longer in the area, I am unable to verify it and some sections in the forest may have undergone changes as a result of forestry work and the 2022 fires that affected the region.

This is a very diverse circular route that allows you to discover two aspects of Mimizan. On the one hand, there is the historical aspect: the bell tower, the wash house, the Borne de Sauveté, and the Château de Woolsack. On the other hand, there is the geographical aspect: the dunes, the forest, the flora, and the site of Lac d'Aureilhan Mimizan. Please note: A municipal decree dated 12 December 2017 prohibits the use of the footbridge known as "Gombaut" (point 7 on the map) for the safety of users. A circular route that passes by the promontory called Tuc des Neuf Églises allows you to climb a few metres in a landscape that is otherwise rather flat.

Literally around the lake, following the shore.

A flat route, very interesting for those who love nature and birds (best done during winter migration): grey cranes, ducks, geese, wading birds, etc.

An original, easy and relaxing circular starting from Vieux-Boucau, going around the Port d'Albret marine lake and then reaching Messanges via the beach, with your feet in the water or not, depending on the tide. The return route passes by the Messanges semaphore, the Étang de Moïsan lake, then enters the Landes forest before reaching the Vieux-Boucau bullring.

Circular walking loop starting from Betbezer-d'Armagnac in the Bas Armagnac countryside in the Landes region on the border with the Gers. You will pass castles, cross vineyards, wooded valleys and hedgerows, and visit the village of Saint-Julien-d'Armagnac perched on a feudal mound. This route is marked by the Landes General Council with horizontal signs and direction changes.

A short walk inspired by a local resident, to discover the moorland near the Étang d'Hardy and Étang Blanc lakes. There are also sandy passages and a pine tree harvesting site, as this is also part of life in the Landes region. The end of the route is along the road, as the path mapped on the left no longer exists.

This route goes around the two large lakes of Arjuzanx, Lake Commanday and Lake Arjuzanx. The track is on a gravel path and is suitable for mountain bikes.

A large circular loop around the Port d'Albret marine lake. Port d'Albret, now called Vieux-Boucau (old mouth), could have been the first port on the Landes coast if the Adour had not been diverted in 1578 to give it its current estuary at Bayonne.

A lovely walk, over hills, sometimes quite sunny, through vineyards and alongside streams, with some lovely views.

A pleasant walk in the Landes forest, which is not always flat... With your family and at a leisurely pace, allow 2 hours; alone and walking briskly, it will take you less than an hour and a half.

Three concentric circular loops run through the pine forest and are recommended by the Ondres and Tarnos Seignanx Tourist Offices. They are marked in red, green and yellow. The yellow-marked route is described here for use with Visorando.

A pleasant route, mainly on secondary roads with beautiful sections on forest and farm tracks. Numerous views of the surrounding valleys and hillsides.

Circular trail to discover remarkable wetlands and forests.

The alluvial plains and marshy lands were drained in the late 17th/early 18th century with the help of the Dutch, who were then working on the Bayonne estuary.

Wooded hike through pine, oak and acacia forests, passing by the miraculous spring of Buglose.

As its name suggests, this hike runs along the Barrage d'Orx marsh in the nature reserve. The nature reserve consists of the Barrage marsh, which you can walk around, and the North Marsh and Central Marsh, which are closed to the public. The Burret Marsh, to the east, is located outside the nature reserve.

Route through the forest on the border between the Gironde and Landes departments, partly following the blue and green marked trails. There are a few sections on sandy paths, including the climb after the D83 and the cycle path.

This hike, which is easy to follow, is a combination of two routes offered by the Biscarrosse Tourist Office. A green route marked by a thick white horizontal line on a green square and a "blue" route marked by a thick blue horizontal line on a white square. The average difficulty lies in the fact that there are passages on sandy terrain. A good walker will complete this route in less than 3 hours.

This route, starting from the renovated church in Retjons and passing through a forest of pine and other tree species, will take you to the Chapel of Lugaut, a listed historic monument, and along a pleasant path beside the Ribarrouy Stream.

From the Moulin de Bénesse, restored by volunteers, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Chalosse and the Pyrenees mountain range. You’ll discover the rolling countryside of Heugas and the neighbouring villages, and can spot at least seven water towers. During opening hours, you can buy bread, pastries and hot drinks at the mill car park.

Head across the moor to the Biscarrosse leisure aerodrome at the Latécoère seaplane base – quite a journey.

Walk through the pine forest and along the “Boudigau” canal to reach the port of Capbreton.

Published by the Landes Departmental Tourism Committee under the name ‘Lower Adour Valley Route’, this route is reproduced here for use with Visorando. A very beautiful circular route alternating between undulating routes and views of the River Adour. Hilly landscape, where meadows, maize fields and kiwi orchards stand side by side. Some may find it too road-heavy, but you’re allowed to walk on roads provided they aren’t too busy.

A lovely walk through the woodland, amongst new pine plantations, and around the Ruisseau de Coulin. Organised by the Landes Departmental Council.

A very short circular route, mainly on country lanes, offering magnificent views and passing through a mosaic of landscapes.

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, situated in the open countryside and completely isolated, is the starting point for numerous routes. This route combines a signposted trail (Landes Departmental Committee) with a walk through wooded areas and past fountains.

A lovely walk through woods and fields, also suitable for hybrid bikes, amongst beautiful estates. Perhaps a little monotonous on foot.

This description of the walk offers a glimpse of the possibilities starting from this small village, where the Way of St James, theGR® 655, the cycle path and three signposted routes all converge.

This walk is only possible outside flood periods. You’ll be walking through the Heugas communal forest, admiring the many oak trees with storks, reaching the River Luy, passing under the D6 bridge, following a backwater of the Luy and reaching the forest track. From there, you can either take the Route de l’alluvial plain – Landes departmental footpath no. 6.5 – or return to your starting point. Please take care as you will need to cross the D6.

A lovely route along paths through the woodland, skirting a charming little river in places. You’ll find the soothing atmosphere of the pine trees and, in summer, the welcome shade of the oaks and chestnut trees. Between (4) and (5), the old village path runs alongside a forestry estate; you must stay on the path and must not enter the forestry estate. This route is designed for horse riding.

A varied and magnificent landscape characterises this circular walk starting from Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains towards the Étang de Moïsan. The route passes at the foot of the dunes, through the forest, then near the Messanges Semaphore before skirting the Étang de Moïsan and the pastures of the Landes sea cows. Finally, the return journey via the Léon–Soustons cycle path takes you back to the centre of Vieux-Boucau.

This section of the Sentier de l’Adour runs between Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and Candresse.

This peaceful ride through the Landes countryside can be enhanced by a visit to the Jean Rostand Interpretation Centre.
