The old gravel pits of Gouts
This is a pleasant route away from the major centres of activity, between cornfields and the banks of the Adour, where you can discover old gravel pits and a 23,400-panel, 11 MWc photovoltaic park floating on the expanse of water created when the gravel pits were abandoned.
Walk along the banks of the Adour and through its alluvial plains
This family-friendly walk will take you along the banks of the Adour and its alluvial plain. ¹
The alluvial plains are vast floodplains frequented by herds of semi-wild horses. The area is rich in wildlife, including storks, egrets and grey herons.
This walk follows the old towpath along the banks of the Adour and can also be done by mountain bike. It has recently been tarmacked from the start to Saubusse. As mentioned above, as the alluvial plains are floodplains, it is best not to walk there after heavy rain.

Please note: the trail is closed from 1 October to 30 November (hunting season).
Larraldota from Arancou
On a sunny plateau overlooking the Bidouze river, Arancou is a village with white walls and a remarkable architectural and human heritage. A historic stop on one of the hiking trails to Santiago de Compostela, the Via Turonensis, Arancou built its reputation around a hospital-priory that welcomed pilgrims from the 13thcentury onwards. There are also a few mansions, once dedicated to hospitality, whose architectural details can still be appreciated. In the village, the Church of Notre-Dame is also worth a visit for its style, which combines a long Romanesque plan with Gothic vaults and capitals. Along the trails, the surrounding hills promise fresh air in the forest, where you can see beautiful hundred-year-old oak trees, while the Bidouze valley offers peace and quiet and cool riverbanks.

Circuit of the Prade stream and the swing in Moliets
A challenging circuit offering high-quality and varied sections. Full of contrasts, it takes you from the banks of the Étang de Moliets to the peaks of a few hills, from the lush vegetation of the wetlands to the perfectly smooth green of the golf course.
Port d'Albret Marine Lake
A large circular loop around the Port d'Albret marine lake.
Port d'Albret, now called Vieux-Boucau (old mouth), could have been the first port on the Landes coast if the Adour had not been diverted in 1578 to give it its current estuary at Bayonne.
From the marine lake of Port d'Albret to the Messanges semaphore
An original, easy and relaxing circular starting from Vieux-Boucau, going around the Port d'Albret marine lake and then reaching Messanges via the beach, with your feet in the water or not, depending on the tide. The return route passes by the Messanges semaphore, the Étang de Moïsan lake, then enters the Landes forest before reaching the Vieux-Boucau bullring.
Barthes de l'Ardanavy
A round trip route along the banks of the Ardanavy to its mouth at the Adour.
This family walk can be done with children on their bicycles.
Tour of the South Orx Marsh
A flat route, very interesting for those who love nature and birds (best done during winter migration): grey cranes, ducks, geese, wading birds, etc.
Le Courant d'Huchet
A very fine circuit, which can be modified to suit the length and type of path required. You follow the Huchet stream, a small river that flows from the Étang de Léon to the ocean. Spectacular flora and beautiful colours at the mouth of this walk through the Landes Amazon.
Author's note 24 June 2024. Walk described on Visorando in 2019, done several times since then, but despite the work done on the footbridge, it is still closed. The forest rangers I met in October 2023 gave me no information about the reopening of the Nasse footbridge. The loop described in 2019 is therefore still not feasible in 2024. A return trip is therefore necessary.
I recommend that you then drive to the mouth of the Huchet stream and follow the stream upstream, as the scenery is sublime depending on the time of day.

Bizkarra (Baigura) from Hélette
There are several routes to the summit of Baigura, one of the Basque Country's most iconic peaks, renowned for its exceptional views. Starting from the village of Hélette, the climb is very varied. From the last houses to the nearby groves, it feels like you're setting off on a short walk to get some fresh air among the ferns. Then, as the morning light begins to gild the slopes of Erregelu and Ursuia, you find yourself drawn into a more ambitious hike, the view of the surrounding valleys becoming more beautiful as you gain height. Following a mountain path close to the ridges, the promontories follow one after the other and the summit of Erregelu, which seemed so far away, is now within reach. From its paragliding launch site, Baigura is already close by, and all that remains is to enjoy the panoramic view.
Loop at Ursuya from the Xixtaberrri farm, known as the Blueberry Farm
Here's another way to do a nice loop in Ursuya. This hike is always on open ground on wide paths with magnificent views from the start to the summit. The end of the return journey is via the Iramalda and Harrixuri ridges with Cambo-les-Bains in front of you and, further away, Bayonne and, of course, the coast. On the left, you can see La Rhune, Mondarrain, Artzamendi, etc.
Le Baigura from the leisure centre
Baigura is one of the iconic peaks of the Basque Country, particularly for its view, which can give you a crick in your neck on a clear day. The panoramic view is renowned, with few peaks missing from the picture and even the peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées visible on a very clear day. Baigura is also an exemplary mountain in terms of its commitment to combining traditional pastoralism with the outdoor activities offered by the leisure centre. Everyone has a role to play in maintaining these exceptional landscapes and sustaining the economy of the valleys. Baigura also offers a concentration of ecosystems that are a delight to visit on this hike. From heathland with gorse and ferns to rocky, windswept ridges, through undergrowth and peat bogs, there are endless discoveries to be made and the horizon is constantly changing. A benchmark for circular sporty hikes.
The Baïgura loop from the Mendionde leisure centre
BaÏgura is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the north of the Basque Country, with a 360° view of the mountains and the surrounding plain. Unfortunately, like many peaks, it is dotted with antennas, but they are very useful...
It is a favourite spot for paragliders who jump from the top of the north face.
