Circular Adour from Sainte-Marie-de-Gosse

Published by the Landes Departmental Tourism Committee under the name ‘Lower Adour Valley Route’, this route is reproduced here for use with Visorando.

A very beautiful circular route alternating between undulating routes and views of the River Adour.
Hilly landscape, where meadows, maize fields and kiwi orchards stand side by side.

Some may find it too road-heavy, but you’re allowed to walk on roads provided they aren’t too busy.

Description of the walk

The starting car park is located on the D393 before you reach the church at Sainte-Marie-de-Gosse.

(S/E) Take the D28 to the right of the church and continue to the next roundabout.

(1) Turn right onto the Route de l’Adour and continue along this road to the banks of the Adour.

(2) Turn right towards Orgave. Follow the riverside path which is circular at the confluence of the Gaves Réunis (the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron join before flowing into the Adour). The road heads north-west, running perpendicular to the river, until it reaches a T-junction.

(3) Turn left to rejoin the riverbank until the road turns north-west.

(4) Head away from the river and return towards Sainte-Marie-de-Gosse. Pass through Benzin and rejoin the D393.

(5) Follow this road northwards to return to the car park (S/E).

A walk that’s almost entirely on roads (very little traffic), long and a bit monotonous.

This route is best done by bike; there’s virtually no point in doing this hike on foot as you’re on the road from start to finish. So there’s really no question of a footpath. Yes, you can see the Adour for most of the way, as well as fields of maize and kiwi fruit.
