Suitable for the whole family, this walk takes young and old alike in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought in the bloodiest battle of the 18th century. Adventure guaranteed! This cycling route takes you to the main sites of the siege of Maubeuge, which took place from 27 August to 8 September 1914. Although the siege immobilised tens of thousands of German soldiers for several days, preventing them from fighting in the Battle of the Marne, it ended in a serious French defeat, with more than 40,000 prisoners, representing a tenth of all French prisoners of war during the Great War.

Discover the industrial Sambre and its biodiversity along the Sambre between Hautmont and Boussières-sur-Sambre. Departing from the port of Hautmont, boat trips aboard the Isara are available in season, providing a pleasant complement to this walking tour.

A family-friendly, rural walk along the village’s quiet paths and streets.Sars-la-Bruyère was first mentioned on 25 October 1185. Its name derives from the Latin *sartum*, meaning ‘cleared’ or ‘weeded’ land, and the village was built along the Roman road between Bavay and Utrecht. It witnessed the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709 and fighting between American and German forces in September 1944.

This is a pleasant walk through rolling fields and quiet little streets, starting from the pretty village of Bougnies. Here you can discover the “living” statue on the site of the old, ruined open-air theatre.

Discover Maubeuge, just a few kilometres from Belgium, in the Avesnois region. A walk that starts in the village of Ferrière-la-Petite, then passes through Maubeuge. Discover its Vauban ramparts, a town steeped in history with its museums, gardens and parks. Walk along the River Sambre, and don’t forget to visit the magnificent Maubeuge Zoo on arrival.

Starting from the charming village of Beaufort, explore the edge of the Haie d’Avesnes, a remnant of the ancient Celtic forest.

This route, in the heart of the Fagne de Solre, is intended for experienced walkers. The distance to be covered, the undulating terrain and some wet sections of the path require a good level of fitness. However, the villages you pass through, the scenery and the views will make the effort worthwhile.

This 50 km bike ride offers a bucolic immersion along the banks of the Sambre, starting from Bachant. You will reach Leval, then Saint-Rémy-du-Nord, crossing peaceful and green landscapes. The route takes you to the port of Hautmont, perfect for a friendly break by the water. An ideal loop for combining relaxation, nature and local flora and fauna.

A pleasant walk through the woods, allowing you to discover the hidden contours of the woodland, the meandering Ruisseau de Colfontaine and the woodland paths. “Ah! This wood, so beautiful and picturesque, with its whimsical paths disappearing into the valleys, following the unexpected twists and turns of the chattering streams and climbing the rugged slopes; its lanes, running from the R’mite cellar, passing not far from the Fountain, all the way to the Pavilion, veering off towards Blaugies or returning towards the first roundabout, its grassy paths winding through the thickets towards the Croatte tavern, or leading you back to the Baraque-à-Ramons, towards the Blondiau skittles alley! What a sight of couples dressed in their Sunday best! What a host of merry and boisterous groups! It was as though all the lovers of the Borinage had taken possession of the Wood…’ Dr Valentin Van Hassel (website link below) If it’s a wet season, make sure you wear suitable footwear as the site (4) is often muddy in such conditions. Currently (June 2025) the ground is dry.

Set off from two listed monuments – the House of François Salignac de la Mothe-Fénélon, Bishop of Cambrai, and the Tour du Lait Buré (a reference to cuckoo flower or a cheese shaped like a ball) – to explore former mining sites, the Molettes frame at Sauwartan and the Grand Bouillon d’En Haut slag heap. Wander through the Bois de Colfontaine and the Bois l’Évêque along wide avenues and gently undulating footpaths. Save your energy for the final stretch of the walk: the 12% gradient of the Rampe Anfouette, which is said to owe its name to the lashes of the whips used by the drivers of the horse-drawn carts that used to travel up the ramp.

A peaceful walk starting from Blaugies towards the French border, taking you through hills and valleys with lovely open views. In sunny weather, the walk offers little shade (bring water) and is a great way to get plenty of fresh air. The idyllic landscapes and quiet paths make for a peaceful walk.

A walk that’s half through woodland and half across open countryside, where you’ll discover the remains of the Sauwartan coal mine and the site of an old watermill, as well as “Nounours” the llama. The more adventurous can climb to the top of the slag heap.

A walk from the picturesque village of Harveng, through fields and sunken lanes, with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. At point (5), however, you will need to walk along the edge of a field for 200 m; it appears the path has been partially ploughed.

An interesting walk along the village paths and beside the Trouille, where you can discover Givry’s many footbridges. The route follows mainly paths to begin with, then winds through the narrow river valley and along its higher banks, offering a variety of landscapes, before ending in the village as you follow the river.

A lovely walk, half through the countryside and half through woodland, along the paths of Warquignies and the Bois de Saint-Ghislain, where you can enjoy the coolness of the Ruisseau d’Elwasmes on hot days. It is worth noting that the Bois de Saint-Ghislain is, curiously, situated between Dour and Warquignies.

A superb 45 km hike combining nature and heritage. You will pass from the banks of the Sambre to the green countryside of the Avesnois. Take a deep breath of fresh air among the flora and fauna and typical landscapes of the Avesnois!

This route links the rural Sambre valley with the Mormal National Forest, passing through the surrounding hedgerow landscape. It therefore follows various paths and roads and traverses a varied landscape. The natural and riverine heritage brings much of the route to life.
