Description of the walk

Park in the village square.

(S/E) From the square, turn right onto Rue de Recquigny, then right onto Rue de l’Église.
Walk round the church and turn right onto Rue d'Ostergnies. You are now on the GR® de Pays de l’Avesnois, marked in yellow on red.

(1) At the crossroads, take the small road opposite, which soon becomes a path lined with woods and pastures. Keep going straight on. In the bend a little further on, you will see the small village of Ostergnies nestled in the valley. Walk around Fort de Cerfontaine. On 2 September, the dome was destroyed. The fort nevertheless held out until the 7th. Walk down to the tarmac road.

(2) Head back up to the left towards the hamlet of Ostergnies, which became part of Colleret in 1825, and at the crossroads, leave the GR® de Pays by turning right. Walk through the peaceful hamlet, staying on the main road.

(3) 500m further on, turn left onto the ‘Chemin Romantique’ and climb through the rolling countryside.

(4) At the end of the path, turn right. You are now on the top of the plateau, where there is a
view of the village of Colleret. Turn right and, 100m further on, head down the path to the right again.

(5) At the road, turn left then right to cross the bridge. Immediately afterwards, turn left onto Rue Émile Zola. At the next junction, continue straight ahead along Rue des Écoles.

(6) At the church, turn right onto Rue Jean Dequesnes. Follow this street until you reach a chapel, then turn left. At the junction, cross the RD936 with care and continue straight ahead onto Rue Lebrun.

(7) After the level crossing, turn right onto the grassy path that runs alongside the railway line. The path becomes a small road which crosses the railway line again at the Marronniers farm.

(8) Take the small road on the right, then the first path on the left, towards Cerfontaine. Walk past the imposing Osterval farm.

(9) A detour to the right and then left takes you back to the square and the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Fort de Cerfontaine

The defence of Maubeuge during the First World War was provided by several Séré de Rivière-type forts, including Fort Cerfontaine. It is a fort with a central massif and a lower battery, featuring a Mougin cupola for two 155L guns, an armoured observation post, and barracks for two companies. On 30 August 1914, the fort came under fire at a rate of one shell per minute, in calibres of 210, 280 and 305 mm. A total of 150 tonnes of shells fell in a single day. The 155 mm turret fired relentlessly.

A lovely find – the mist added a special touch to the atmosphere. Our favourite part of the walk was the pretty village of Ostergnies.
At (1) we took a slight detour from the route, which I’ll describe here: Turn left onto the Chemin du Fort, follow it until you reach a path on the right that leads into the fort grounds (signposted ‘forêt domaniale’) and heads towards the entrance gate. From there, head back and take the path on the left, which climbs and goes round the fort on the right; at the crossroads, turn left to follow the ditch surrounding the fort and, after passing numerous shell craters on the left of the path, take the path on the right which quickly rejoins the route and follow the path to the left.
At the next bend (stone bench), leave a path on your left.
After the (4) "...100 metres further on, turn right again, the path..." . In fact, you reach a tree with a yellow cross. Ignore this (unless the route has been altered?) and join Rue Pierre et Marie Curie, following it to the right.

First of all, there’s a spacious car park in the village centre, followed by a lovely, peaceful walk in the countryside where you can explore a castle (which isn’t open to the public) in the woods

A walk through the countryside along winding paths; there are quite a few large puddles at the start of the route, but nothing to worry about. No particular difficulties to mention, apart from having to cross the main road using the pedestrian crossings.
A peaceful and interesting route offering some views along the undulating paths
