Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the old station.

(S/E) Head towards the level crossing and turn right onto Rue de l’Industrie. Turn left as the road bends and walk past the sports ground on your right.

(1) Take the footbridge. Walk to the left along the river, then continue along Rue de la Cure to reach Place de la République.

(2) Cross the square and continue along Rue du 8 Mai. In front of the Town Hall, turn right into Rue Roger Salengro, then after about 250m, cross the road and go up Rue de la Barrière on the left. Walk past the retirement home.

(3) Cross the Chemin Stratégique with care and continue along the dirt track opposite. After 300m, turn right. Viewpoint overlooking the surrounding countryside.

(4) At the road, turn left. A little further on, follow the RD95 towards Hautmont, near Fort du Bourdiau, the highest point in Ferrière-la-Grande and a key part of Maubeuge’s defensive perimeter.

(5) After the fort, turn left onto the path through the fields and, at the fork, head down to the left. View of the Hauts de Ferrière. At the junction with the tarmac road, at a place called Le Champ de Loup, continue straight ahead on the path.

(6) Take the RD182 on the left. Walk past the pine forests and the pastures where sheep graze, passing the old Taverne des Fouées and the imposing Raidmont farmstead.

(7) At the crossroads, cross the RD27 with care and follow the dirt track straight ahead, which takes you to Ferrière-la-Petite, through the woods and along the river. At the end of the track, turn right and head towards the old station.

(8) Continue left along the old railway line, now converted into a greenway. Along the way, the greenway takes on the appearance of a mini-canyon, once carved out for the passage of trains. Return to the car park at the old station (S/E).

The short alternative route allows for a quick return whilst offering views of the hills above Ferrière. Take care when crossing the RD95, 27 and 436.

Route listed in the PDIPR (Departmental Plan for Walking and Hiking Routes).

Follow the yellow markings: (Yellow Cross = wrong direction, arrow to the right = turn right, arrow to the left = turn left, horizontal line = go straight ahead).

Short alternative route at (4).

You will reach the road, where you turn right. About 100m further on, cross the road, walk down a few metres and take the Chemin des Quatre Vaches, which leads down through the fields towards the centre of Ferrière-la-Grande. The path becomes Rue de la Marlière. At the junction, turn right onto Rue Casimir Fournier. At the foot of the Notre-Dame du Bon Vouloir Chapel, head down Rue Roger Salengro to the right, cross the stream to the right of Les Besaces and reach Place de la République. Opposite, take Rue de la Cure and follow the path back in the opposite direction to the old station.

this route could be interesting, but some sections are poorly maintained
before reaching point 6, you have to cross a cultivated field... Today, the crops have been harvested, but during ploughing season, when the field is being worked or when it is raining, it is best to avoid this section of the trail

The end (2 km) was more pleasant than the start.
Unmaintained path, forced to go through the pastures.
A long path through brambles, also unmaintained; we couldn’t see the end of it.
We didn’t particularly enjoy this hike.

The first part of the route through the town is a bit long. Some of the sections across the fields are hard to find, as farmers have encroached on the path. The end of the walk is more pleasant

Hello.
A pleasant route, suitable for children. Please note, however, that after Fort du Bourdiau there is a section with brambles.
