Cumberland walks

A short and fairly easy, circular walk up the ever popular Cat Bells. Starting from parking on the roadside just outside the village of Grange, this walk ascends Cat Bells from the South and descends north to join paths through the parkland and woods above and beside Derwent Water.

Combining the delights of Borrowdale with the rural charm of Watendlath, this Lake District walk offers some wonderful views and relatively easy walking. Route finding is generally easy although there is a steady ascent from Lodore up to Watendlath.

Dog- friendly circular walk around Ennerdale water. This is a lovely and not too popular lake in the west part of the Lake District.

Easy circular walk around Buttermere Water. This walk offers beautiful views on the surrounding summits.

A linear Lake District walk that follows the shore of Derwentwater south from Keswick to Lodore landing stage. The return to Keswick uses the seasonal launces on Derwentwater.

Dog-friendly circular walk starting from Sandwith village and passing by Fleswick Bay, St Bees Lighthouse and Birkham's Quarry.

A circular walk starting from Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre ascending via forest trails to Seat Howe which offers good views over Keswick and Derwent Water before descending via well defined forest trails back to start.

The classic and well trodden ascent of Scafell Pike from Seathwaite in Borrowdale. Ascending via Grains Gill to Great End and then Esk Hause and Broad Crag. The descent is via the 'Corridor Route' to Styhead Tarn and then back to Seathwaite.

Harter Fell occupies a relatively isolated position overlooking the Eskdale valley and this Lake District walk offers some wonderful views towards Scafell and Scafell Pike. The route also includes a visit to pretty Low Birker Tarn, which sees relatively few visitors.

This linear walk in the Western Lake District offers some wonderful views and should be completed at a leisurely pace. The route uses the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway to the return to the start.

Varying walk covering the 5 most North Westerly Wainwright fells. Taking in the summits of Barf, Lords Seat, Broom Fell, Ling Fell and Sales fell. With views the full length of Bassenthwaite Lake and the magnificent massive of Skiddaw. Coastal views should be evident on a clear day.

Lovely walk starting from Dalegarth, following the river Esk until Doctor Bridge, and returning by Low Birker Tarn and the other side of the river Esk. This is a dog-friendly walk. If you take the detour, there is no path to access Low Birken tarn. We can only see the small tarn from above. The view from the path going to the tarn is lovely. Good navigation skills are needed to walk around Tarn Crag as the path is not visible.

A route offering extensive views of the Ennerdale panorama with great mountain views to the north east taking in Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag, to the east the range of Pillar and Steeple with Great Gables, Scafell and Scafell Pike as a backdrop.

Dog friendly circular walk in the North Pennines AONB. View from the top of Talkin Fell is breathtaking with its series of cairns.

This Lake District walk starts from Swirls and ascends Helvellyn via Browncove Crags. The route continues north over Whiteside and Raise to reach Sticks Pass from where a descent back into the valley is made. This is a great route to the top of England's third highest mountain with equally stunning views.

St bees beach is one of the most beautiful beach in West Cumbria. The beach is dog-friendly all year round. Great view on Black Combe mountain. ⚠️This walk can only be done at low tide.

A rewarding Lake District walk of the highest calibre. The Horseshoe route takes in all the peaks on either side of the Newlands Valley and offers some wonderful walking and superb views throughout.

An energetic Lake District Horseshoe walk that takes in four summits as you keep to the high ground surrounding Gillercomb. The walk could also be extended to take in Great Gable if time and energy permit!

A lovely moderate walk passing by the bottom of Udale plantation, nannycatch gate and the side of Flat Fell summit. The descend from Udale Plantation to nannycatch path is steep and can be difficult for some walkers.

Longer walk from Barepot hamlet to Seaton village and Camerton village using the bicycle path and following the river Derwent to return to Barepot. Great view of the Lake District mountains in the distance and the South of Scotland. Dog friendly.

A little walk through walkmill woods between Whitehaven and Moresby Park. Perfect for children and dog friendly. 

This is such a short walk, but it serves a purpose. With International Astronomy Day falling on 12th October, this short stroll will take you to a local viewpoint very close to Keswick where you can leave the light pollution behind and watch the stars from this perfect spot.

In my opinion there is no better way to get to the start of the ascent of Cat Bells other than by boat. Catching the first ferry of the day will allow you to get to Hawes End without all the hassle of trying to find somewhere to park. The return ferry from Lodore Landing Stage is just as pleasant with fantastic views. Parking: There are several places to park in Keswick but I like to park at the Lakeside Car Park near the Theatre by the Lake and the Landing Stages.

A nice walk to see the Lanercost Priory and walk a section of the Hadrian's Wall. The ruin of Hadrian Wall is not visible on this section.

Lovely circular walk from Ravenglass following the Esk river and passing by Newtown knott and the Roman Bath. Beautiful view on the Irish sea. Dog Friendly. ⚠️Be careful walk to be done at low tide.

Easy circular walk along the Keswick old railway line and back by the bottom of Latrigg summit. Amazing view of Keswick along the way. Dog friendly and pushchair / wheelchair friendly until the waypoint (1).

Lovely walk around Sale Fell summit with great views on Bassenthwaite Lake and surrounding summits. Dog friendly walk.

An easy circular walk from Ravenglass to Muncaster Castle. Dog friendly. Perfect to do end of April/beginning of May to see the bluebells and rhododendrons blooming at Muncaster Castle.

This circular walk brings you along Crummock Water, up Scale Force before scrambling up to Red Pike and down to Bleaberry Tarn and Buttermere. ⚠️Be careful along the way, there are some parts where you need to put your hand on the rock, there is no obvious path so navigation skill is important and there is a scramble going to Bleaberry Tarn which can be challenging .

This walk goes around Mellbreak summit passing by Mosedale and the shore of Crummock water. This is a dog friendly walk.

A circular walk starting from Haverigg village to take the sea defence wall around the seaward side of Hodbarrow Nature Reserve before turning inland around the rest of the nature reserve. Excellent views over the estuary and Hodbarrow Lake on the route. The site was once the most productive iron ore mine in the world before it flooded.

Easy walk along the shore of Crummock water starting from Lanthwaite wood. Dog friendly.

Circular dog friendly walk to Little Dodd and Hen Comb summits starting from Loweswater village. These summits are less popular than Mellbreak summit. Be careful crossing of the river can be tricky if it has rained the previous days.

Amazing walk starting from Ennerdale lake and passing by Red Pike, Little Dodd, Starling Dodd and Great Borne summits.

Great circular walk going to Watendlath Tarn. This valley is not really popular. Dog friendly walk. Good navigation skills are needed during this section as the path is not visible.

Great walk combining two small Wainwright summits Sale Fell and Ling Fell. Dog friendly; however can have sheep in the fields.

Cat Bells summit is one of the easiest Wainwright summits to do. It is perfect for a family day out; however during summer months this walk is very popular. Dog friendly walk.
