Description of the walk

Start: National Trust car park, Buttermere, Cockermouth CA13 9XA

(S/E) Exit the car park and take right on the B5289 in the direction of Buttermere village. Just after the bridge take the road on the right (between the Bridge hotel and Croft House Farm Café). Then pass the gate to take the footpath in the direction of Buttermere lake (leaving the Lake District National Car park on your right hand side). Continue on this path until reaching the shore of Buttermere lake (around 500m).

(1) Then take right (South-West), in the direction of the bridge crossing Buttermere Dubs river and Sourmilk Gill waterfall. Pass the gate on the left to enter Burtness Wood and arrive on the path following the shore of Buttermere lake. Once on the large shore path, continue straight up to the end of the lake (the lake should be on your left hand side). At the end of the lake, take left to pass Peggy's bridge and go in the direction of Gatesgarth farm (North-East).

(2) Pass the farm and take left on the B5289 (North-West). Continue on the road for around 800m taking left on the path going towards the shore of the lake. Continue following the shore of the lake until (1). Then take right to leave the shore and go back to the car park.

Alternative: At waymark (3) it is possible to leave the shore to take right in the direction of Buttermere village.

Terrain: Good path around Buttermere water.

Dog friendly: Dogs can be off-lead most of the walk; can have some livestocks near the end of Buttermere water (in the direction of Peggy's Bridge and Gatesgarth Farm) and small sections on the main road. Dogs to be on lead when crossing fields with livestock.

Family walk around Buttermere with 6 adults and 4 kids. Nice easy walk around the water, clearly signed. Kids loved it and plenty of places around the waters edge for quick paddle. Nice ice cream stop at half way too.
