Description of the walk

Start: Ravenglass car park, Croftlands Dr, Ravenglass (CA18 1SQ). Grid ref. SD 085 964
⚠️Be careful walk to be done at low tide.

(S/E) Exit the car park by Croftlands Drive. Turn right and follow Croftlands Drive until arriving on Main Street. At the corner with The Inn Ravenglass pub, take left (South) on Main Street. Continue until the Main Street stops and the road opens on the beach.

(1) Once on the beach take the path on the left (East) that follows the River Esk. The beginning of this path is marked as the England Coastal Path, continue straight on it following the shore of the river Esk for around 1.6Km. Stop following the England Coastal path when it goes left. Do not go under the bridge but instead continue straight on the beach.

(2) At the bend of the River Esk take left (East) on the path still following the river. The path will pass under the train line. Continue straight until (around 1,2 Km) to see the path ending and a gate on the left entering a wood. Leave the beach to take left and pass the gate.

(3) At an intersection of paths take left then after a couple of meters take right. Continue straight on this path across the field to find the gap into the wall.

(4) At the gap turn left (the dry stone wall should be on your left hand side). Continue straight on this path where you will have beautiful views on the Irish sea. After a couple of meters, you will see a path on the right going uphill.

(5) Take right on the large rocky path going uphill and then right again to reach Newtown knott. 360 °view of the estuary from the summit.

(6) From Newtown knott walk down to the junction using the same path.

(5) Continue straight on the path that will become a road. Continue on the Walls Drive road ignoring all the side paths until reaching the campsite and the main road.

(7) Just after the campsite and before the road, turn left on the footpath and continue straight until reaching the bridge above the train line.

(8) If the bridge is opened pass the bridge and continue straight to arrive at the car park.
If the bridge is closed turn right to walk down towards Ravenglass train station. Cross the ground of the Railway museum and continue straight until reaching the main road. Turn left on the main road, walk under the bridge and continue straight until seeing Croftlands Drive. Turn left on Croftlands Drive to reach the car park.(S/E)
