Hodbarrow Reserve from Havering

A circular walk starting from Haverigg village to take the sea defence wall around the seaward side of Hodbarrow Nature Reserve before turning inland around the rest of the nature reserve. Excellent views over the estuary and Hodbarrow Lake on the route. The site was once the most productive iron ore mine in the world before it flooded.

Description of the walk

Start : Harbour Hotel Haverigg (LA18 4EX) Grid ref. SD 160 786

(S/E) From the roundabout in from of the hotel, take the footbridge East over Haverigg Pool watercourse. Immediately after crossing Pool Bridge turn right (South-East) to take the footpath beside Haverigg Pool. Follow the path as it curves left (East) along the bank beside the waterfront.

(1) Continue on the path above the beach as it bears right (South) for around 220 m.

(2) Take a wide path right (South-East) along the sea defence wall and walk for 2.1 Km as the path bears North-East. On the way, enjoy views on the left over the lake and right over the estuary. Excellent views South over Duddon Channel also bird hide looking North over the lake.

(3) Here take a detour, leaving the substantial track to take a footpath right (South-East) through sand dunes up to the headland. Carefully descend the headland and head North over the old quarry floor to ascend to the windmill base. Good views over the bay and lake from here. Carefully descend and take the footpath North through the dunes back to a well-defined sea defence track at the waypoint (3).

Otherwise, take the path left (North-West) between Hodbarrow lake and 'Cyclops' tower from where you can get excellent views over Hodbarrow Lake. Then carry on this path North-East-North keeping the lake on your left-hand side until you reach a car park and road. However, keep walking along the path located on the lakeside with the water on your left-hand side until you join the road.

(4) Follow the road left (South) beside the caravan park.

(5) Then, follow the road briefly right (West) and left as it turns.

(6) Turn right (West) along the roadway. Follow the roadway South around Old Gin Mill then right (West) along the roadway beside the caravans. Continue along the roadway. Ice cream is available here if you are lucky.

(1) Continue West on the track between the cricket club and Pepper Hall Walk to the footbridge over Haverigg Pool and back to the start(S/E).
