Description of the walk

Start: Lanthwaite Wood National Trust car park (CA13 9UX). Grid ref. NY 149 215

(S/E) Exit the car park and take left (South-West) on the road. Pass the bridge and then after 180m, take the first smaller road on the left (South) in the direction of Muncaster House.

(1) Pass Muncaster House and continue straight on the concrete road.

(2) Take left (South) at the intersection of roads to pass the little bridge. After the bridge take right on the footpath before the house. Continue on this footpath going through a little hamlet.

(3) At the end of the hamlet take the path in front of you (between a wall on your left-hand side and field. Be careful it is not really visible). Continue on this path until reaching a forest (Flass Wood). Take the path crossing the forest with a wall on your right-hand side. Continue following the wall/fence until reaching a larger path.

(4) Merge with the larger rocky path and continue straight South for 1.2 Km on the path with Mossedale Beck further down the valley.

(5) After 1.2 Km, leave the path closer to Mossedale Beck to take the path going slightly up the fell. Continue on this path that is turning around Mellbreak summit Be careful to do not take any of the paths that are going up Mellbreak summit. After around 200m take right across the moorland. Be careful the path across the moor is not really visible and can also be very muddy. Navigate going South to arrive at a fence and continue down towards the river.

(6) Take left (East) on the path following the river. After around 200m you will see a path on your right hand side going to Scale Force Waterfall. The path is not indicated, you will need to follow the map to find it. Continue until seeing a bridge and the waterfall.

(7) Once at Scale Force Waterfall retrace your step (Do not cross the bridge). Then take directly right at the gate on the path following the river North-East. This small path will converge into a bigger path. Continue going in the direction of Crummock water until nearly the shore of the lake.

(8) At the intersection of paths take left to follow the shore of Crummock water (Do not cross any bridges). Continue following the shore of Crummock water for 3.6 Km until reaching Lanthwaite Wood.

(9) At the entrance of Lanthwaite Wood take left (North) to cross the wood (North-West) and join the car park (S/E)
