Yonne (l') walks

A walk through forests and along the Yonne channel. A magnificent view of the Yonne valley from the aqueduct.

In Montigny-en-Morvan, there are several hikes. We did a combination of two hikes: Les rives du Petit Lac (12km) and Les Rives de Pannecière (8km).

Animal-themed walking trail created by Year 4-6 pupils at Villevallier Primary School in June 2015 as part of the "Un chemin, une école" (One trail, one school) initiative run by the Yonne branch of the French Hiking Federation.

A very easy hike, with a return trip along the Canal d'Acconay and then the Canal de la Nièvre. The section through the woods offers a beautiful view of Accolay.

Long walk on flat ground, along the Joigny diversion canal to Cézy and back along the Yonne. Easy, peaceful route with the opportunity to spot wild birds such as wild ducks, cormorants and even wild swans.

This hike offers a main course and dessert of varied landscapes and views. The price you pay will depend on your physical abilities!

A hike with a water theme! First, across fields, you will pass sand pits and disused quarries that have been transformed into vast ponds. The second part takes place entirely along the Yonne, which you follow for about 7 km. Two churches and two castles complete the picture nicely.

Sermentole and its varied forest landscapes, followed by a visit to the charming village of Asnois with its Saint-Loup church, castle, wash house and swimming spot.

A very pleasant walk: from the top of the hills, the view is superb, provided the sky is clear. The first part is winding and hilly until Cravant, but the return journey is on a flat, tarmac path along the Canal du Nivernais and the Yonne.

Over 100 million years of history beneath your feet! This hike passes over the coral limestone plateau formed at the end of the Mesozoic era. The water that flows here is responsible for the decorations in many of the caves beneath your feet. This route overlooks the valleys and allows you to discover the built and natural heritage of this mountain range.

A tour between town and country in the land of the wood floaters.

A very pleasant route with ascents and descents on the slopes of the Yonne, above Joigny. You will enjoy several crossings through the woods and the beautiful panorama of the town of Joigny from the highest point of the route. This route will delight keen walkers.

The Three Bell Towers walk passes through the wine-growing villages of Escolives-Sainte-Camille, Jussy and Coulanges-la-Vineuse, taking in their most beautiful scenery. Discover the vineyards and cherry trees whilst looking up at the church bell tower as you pass through each village.

Situated on the banks of the Yonne, Gurgy has been home to Saint-André Church since the 10th century. The fish ladder, the river stop and its ponds make this village a place centred around its river and nature. Follow the water trail and don’t miss the heritage orchard, the black poplars and the Puits d’Enfer. Whether on foot, by bike or with a fishing rod, enjoy the activity that suits you best!

A stroll to the confluence of the Yonne and the Burgundy Canal, offering the chance to discover the two driving forces behind Migennes’ development: the digging of the Burgundy Canal and the arrival of the railway.

The source of the Yonne (and its archaeological site) and Mont Preneley (the highest point in the Nièvre department) lie at the geographical centre of this circular route. It passes through beautiful forests and some farmland, offering numerous panoramic views of the Morvan. It skirts the elegant Rangère pond, passes through several hamlets and the pretty village of Glux-en-Glenne, and ends at the small yet photogenic waterfalls on the young Yonne.

From Chitry-les-Mines, home of Jules Renard, to Corbigny and back via the Yonne and the Nivernais Canal.

This is the second section of the Via Burgundia® route, which runs from Montereau-Fault-Yonne to Mâcon. This walk offers a varied route with beautiful views over the Yonne valley. It invites us to discover Sens, which boasts a remarkable heritage and a rich history that is well worth exploring.

Walk starting from Corbigny along the Canal du Nivernais, returning via the paths of the Corbigny countryside.

Starting from the Mailly-le-Château viewpoint, this is a short, easy walk – a peaceful and straightforward route through the woods and along the canal. .

This pleasant, easy route is partly shaded in summer. The proximity to the water offers lovely views of the River Yonne and the fishing ponds at Villeneuve. You can spot a variety of wildlife and attractions… as well as anglers in action.

In Clamecy, explore medieval houses, the Nivernais Canal, the River Yonne and more recent developments, such as the wind turbines.

Head up to the hills above Clamecy to discover another vantage point over the ‘Little Venice of the Nièvre’, as Romain Rolland liked to describe it. Your gaze will first be drawn to the River Yonne, the statue of the raftsman and the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bethléem, a reminder of the bishopric, which was exiled to Clamecy in the 13th century. From Sembert, Clamecy and its medieval historic centre seem nestled amidst lush countryside, traversed by the River Yonne and the Nivernais Canal, one of the most beautiful canals in Europe.

This route passes through the renowned Côte Saint-Jacques vineyards in Joigny.

Hiking around Varenne-sur-Seine. The trails leading to springs, mills and wash houses complete this circuit, passing by the Noue Notre-Dame leisure centre and the botanical garden with its castle.

Reserved for walkers and cyclists, this easy loop in a calm setting will allow you to explore the Sens vine conservatory comprising more than 600 plants of 30 grape different varieties, before returning via the banks of the Yonne. Along the way, you’ll also find a sports circuit with gym apparatus, and a golf driving range.

A very varied circular loop starting from Joigny, with quite a bit of elevation gain for the region. No technical difficulties; all paths are passable. You’ll cycle in both shade and sunshine. This circular loop follows the Yonne, allowing you to warm up, then climbs and winds through the Othe Forest, returning to the starting point via the other side of the valley.

A three-stage walk from station to station. First, you cross the town of Montereau, the highlight being the Gothic collegiate church and the double bridge at the confluence of the Seine and the Yonne. Next, you follow the towpath, which is mostly shaded. Finally, you climb to a higher elevation before descending to Vernou-sur-Seine station. (Please note) Just before (9), the underpass beneath the railway line is closed (see the comment posted on 21 July 2026). Until this obstruction is cleared, one option is to turn right to find a level crossing. Once you have crossed the tracks safely, follow the D39 to the left until you reach point (9).

Passing through the Seiglats Regional Nature Reserve on this hike, you will see a variety of birds, including birds of prey and passerines, as well as locks along the banks of the Seine and Yonne rivers and ponds.

A lovely walk along the banks of the Yonne, the canal and the surroundings of Clamecy.This walk is based on the "Water and Wind Route" but is slightly shorter.

Discover the charm of the Yonne valley with this circular route that’s accessible to everyone. Starting from the Bazarnes playground (an ideal spot for a picnic or for the children on the way back), this flat, shaded route takes you right up close to the water. You’ll first follow the unspoilt banks of the Yonne, before reaching the tranquillity of the Canal du Nivernais and its towpath. An ideal route for families to spot aquatic wildlife, watch boats passing through the locks and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet in the heart of nature.

A walk to discover the town of Cadet Roussel, taking in the iconic sites of the historic centre and the banks of the Yonne. Allow a full day to cover these almost 7 km, including visits to the churches and breaks by the Yonne.

A three-day hike starting from Bibracte, with no major difficulties apart from the length of the first stage. By observing the landscape and the place names, you’ll be transported back to the days of the timber raftsmen who used streams and then rivers to transport timber to Paris, via the Yonne and the Seine. A thriving industry that provided work for thousands of people in the Morvan fromthe 16th century until 1926.

Third stage of the hike Towards the sources of the timber-floating trade, this fairly challenging section takes you upstream along the rivers, to where the timber was stored at the ‘ports’ of the timber-floating trade, so far from the sea... While waiting for the great flood (caused by the release of water from the ponds), the timber was then set adrift and continued its journey, not without difficulties, to Clamecy where it was tied together into rafts. It then continued its journey unhurriedly towards Paris where it was sold.

The second stage of this three-day hike, which is shorter and less steep. It leads from Athez to the Étang du Châtelet via the old Voie du Tacot railway line. The hike passes through Arleuf and the Théâtre des Bardiaux. From pond to pond, you’ll walk in the footsteps of the timber rafters.

This walk will first take you through the narrow streets of Joigny, where you can see the church, and halfway through you will find yourself on the heights of the town with a beautiful view between the points (5) and (6)

This hike offers beautiful views of the Yonne valley and a bucolic stroll through vineyards, cherry orchards and along the banks of the Yonne. It will give you a breath of fresh air and allow you to get to know the unusual village of Bailly.

This marked GR® route around the Île-de-France region (with a few forays into neighbouring departments and regions) complements its "little brother", the GR®1, by forming a circular route around Paris, generally with a slightly larger radius. It follows the same overall pattern: first, a radial section starting from Paris (more precisely from the Pont d'Austerlitz, near the former confluence of the Bièvre and the Seine), going up the entire Bièvre valley, then continuing to Villiers-Saint-Frédéric, in the Yvelines. From there, it is a circular route that loops around the Île-de-France region, close to its borders with neighbouring regions. The route passes through beautiful regions, often untouched by intensive urbanisation, regional nature parks and other protected natural areas, and takes in some architectural wonders.

On this route, discover the richness of the local heritage. Walk through the Coteaux de Tannay vineyards and meet the winegrowers who produce this famous grape variety known as ‘Melon’. Follow the famous waterway, the Nivernais Canal, and with a bit of luck, as you round a lock, you’ll see a boat passing through. Discover the 13th-century Saint-Loup Church and the bust of Paul-Jean Rigollot, inventor of “Papier Rigollot”.

Twenty-fourth stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, starting from Donnemarie-Dontilly after spending the night there at the end ofthe previous stage. This stage connects the Montois region to the Seine Valley and Montereau-Fault-Yonne, the confluence of the Seine and Yonne rivers. It thus transitions from an agricultural landscape to a marshland landscape in the valley, ending in a more urban environment.

A lovely cycle ride on a standard or electric bike, taking you on a journey of discovery through the forests of Haut-Folin along quiet country lanes. A 1,000-metre climb for a lovely ride lasting just under 3 hours.

A short 3 km loop, marked in pink, starting from the Church of Saint-Victor, built in the 12th century and renovated in the 16th century.You will take a path that leads to the wetland area where there is an unusual Gustave Eiffel-style wash house.This wetland area contains several bubbling springs.In the wash house itself, you can already see a few bubbling springs.By skirting around this wetland area, you will follow the Yonne river to take the towpath, then go around the Grand Varennes estate with its park and mill, before returning to the town hall and village square after discovering the house of the regicide Jacques-Clément.

Reserved for experienced cyclists, this challenging circular route between Sens and Villeneuve-sur-Yonne follows mainly cycle paths and small country lanes and features some steep gradients.

From park to garden, this family-orientated circuit will help you discover the many beautifully maintained green spaces in the city of Sens.
