Athez - Châtelet

The second stage of this three-day hike, which is shorter and less steep. It leads from Athez to the Étang du Châtelet via the old Voie du Tacot railway line. The hike passes through Arleuf and the Théâtre des Bardiaux. From pond to pond, you’ll walk in the footsteps of the timber rafters.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Towards the sources of the timber-floating route

Description of the walk

Set off from the stopover lodge in the hamlet of Athez, in the commune of Anost, on the D388.

(S) On leaving the lodge, turn left onto the road towards Anost, then left again onto the small unmarked path, and finally onto the track on the right. This is the old Voie du Tacot, which linked Autun to Châtillon-en-Bazois. Continue straight on along the path, which is fairly obvious. Keep left twice. Pass by a pond and arrive at Les Malpeines.

(1) Continue to the right, then right again until you reach Les Cloiseaux.

(2) Cross the road. Go straight on, then left, and rejoin the road.

(3) Go straight on to the end of the road at Arleuf.

(4) Cross the D 978 (take care). Go round the village, past the church, turn left twice, cross the main road again and, at the campsite, turn left, then right at the pumping station to reach the junction from the outward journey.

(3) Turn left towards Les Gardebois Petits. Turn right and continue to the end of the road. Turn left until you reach the D500.

(5) Cross it, leaving Les Gardebois Grands on your left, after 300m, and take the path on the left to Les Raviers.

(6) Turn right to see the Théâtre des Bardiaux.

(7) Turn back.

(6) Take the road straight ahead. The names of the hamlets are amusing: “Le Chaz, Manges, Les Petits, Poisson”. Cross Le Chaz to the left, then to the right and, once again, to the left. Follow the GR® de Pays straight ahead.

(8) At "Les Petits", at the cross, continue straight ahead, passing the houses on the road, ignoring the path on the right. The road turns into a path. When you reach a road, turn right, then left and cross the main road (be careful).

(9) Turn left, then immediately right, still following the red and yellow markings. Follow the path straight on, then turn right at the next junction. Cross a small road and follow it to the right.

(10) At the junction, head left, staying on the road. Pass through Voucoux. At a wide bend, go straight on, following the GR® de Pays (red and yellow)

(11) Continue straight on until you reach the Étang du Châtelet (E).
