The hillsides north of Joigny

The starting point is in the car park just in front of the covered market.

(S/E) Walk along the covered market on your right and reach the Yonne. Go down the three small steps. Take the path on the left, walking along the Yonne on your right. After the house on the left, ignore the path on the left and continue straight ahead along the Yonne for about 1 km until you find a road on the left.

(1) Follow it to the left for about 80 metres until you reach the next path on the right. Turn right and continue straight ahead along the long path between the trees. When you reach the Yonne, turn slightly left and follow the river for about 100 metres. Then turn left. Further on, continue along the Huot lane until you reach the D 943.

(2) Cross the road carefully and turn right, continuing for about 100 metres. Turn left onto Allée de Coubertin. Go straight ahead and cross Avenue de Mayen, then Rue Albert Camus. Continue along Rue Claude Debussy. At the end, continue along a footpath on the left-hand side. Shortly afterwards, cross Rue Jean Faurel. At the end, first turn left then right to follow Rue Alfred de Musset to the end.

(3) Take a wide grassy path on the left (not shown on the IGN map). Turn right then left along this path, ignore a path on the left a little further on and continue uphill. Join Chemin du Calvaire and follow it uphill to the right (wide sandy path).

(4) Take the first path on the left at a 90° angle, which climbs steeply. A little further on, ignore the path on the left and continue climbing. Continue to the right along the path, which climbs slightly. Then continue for about 1 km until you reach the cross path.

(5) Turn left and descend. At the fork (elevation 189), continue straight ahead (ignore the path on the right, which descends more steeply), then ignore a path that climbs to the left and, a little further down, another on the right. Continue straight ahead to the next intersection.

(6) Turn right and continue straight ahead, then take the next path on the right. Follow it to the intersection at elevation 125. Turn right and reach a cross path. Turn left and continue to a T-junction.

(7) First turn left then right and continue up an uphill path. After about 100 metres, turn right. Just before the large vineyards on the hill, turn left. After about 100 metres, turn left with the path and immediately ignore a path on the right (not shown on the map). Go straight up (south), then down to the next crossroads.

(8) Then turn right. At the T-junction, take the wide sandy path on the right that climbs steeply. Ignore two paths that climb to the left and continue to a crossroads. Take the first path on the left at 90°, skirting a wood on the right. Follow it, curving to the left until you reach a T-junction.

(9) Turn right, ignoring a path on the right (which does not exist on site) and then on the left, and continue slightly downhill until you reach a wide cross path. Continue uphill for a few metres until you reach the first path on the left.

(10) Turn left and climb for a few metres. Turn left again as you descend. A little further on, at the edge of the vineyard, take the first path on the left. After 100 metres, ignore a path on the right that climbs uphill. Continue straight ahead until you reach a cross path. Descend to the right for about 150 metres until you reach the next path on the left.

(11) Turn left and a little further on, just before the^first houses, descend to the right and continue a little further to Rue du Luxembourg. Cross and turn right for about 100 metres. Opposite the cemetery, turn left and join Boulevard Lacam. Cross and turn right for 50 metres. Turn left onto Rue de la Tour Carré, continue to the crossroads and follow the street into the castle until you reach the church.

(12) In front of the church, turn right and go downhill, pass under the porch and immediately afterwards go down the wide steps. Opposite, take the Haute Saint-Jean lane until you reach a T-junction. First turn left then right and continue opposite along the Basse Saint-Jean lane until you reach the small steps at the bottom that lead to the D 943. Turn left and stay on the left-hand pavement for about 100 metres. Cross the D 943 to the right. Opposite the covered market, turn left, walking alongside the covered market on your right, and return to the starting point. (S/E).
