Description of the walk

(S/E) Start at the Migennes Tourist Office, Place François Mitterrand.

Walk down to the bank of the Burgundy Canal and follow it to the right. Continue to lock 114/115, known as the Laroche Lock, the first and highest lock on the Burgundy Canal. Cross Avenue du Port then continue straight ahead along the outer harbour.

(1) Continue along Rue Pierre et Marie Curie, following the banks of the Yonne for about 250m. Turn slightly left to continue along the Quai de l’Yonne for about 1km to the first bridge.

(2) Cross the bridge, then turn immediately left (GR®213) and follow the banks of the Yonne in the opposite direction along the towpath. Pass under the railway line and continue to the next bridge.

(3) Take the footpath and cycle path to go up onto the bridge. Cross it (D177) and pass in front of the river works site. Continue along the D177 until the junction with the D43. Then turn left and go under the railway bridge again via the “underpass”.

(4) Immediately after exiting the tunnel, cross Avenue du Port again. Follow the Canal de Bourgogne along Rue du Port du Canal until you reach the iron footbridge spanning it. Cross the footbridge to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

At the start of the walk, about 200m to the right, the wash house of the Hameau du Canal, built in 1873 by the architect Nage.

The lock known as Laroche, originally a double lock (114/115), the highest and most monumental on the Burgundy Canal. An old hydraulic crane used to supply the PLM steam locomotives is installed alongside the lock. On the right, the first canal keeper’s house.

The confluence, where the Burgundy Canal meets the River Yonne.

The Laroche Bridge, originally a stone bridge partially destroyed in 1944 by bombing, was subsequently replaced by a footbridge which did not withstand the major floods of 1955. The current bridge has only a single carriageway.

The Charmoy Bridge.

Very nice walk and good app
My only regret is the lack of information during the route. I didn't have sound, so I had to keep looking at my phone
Otherwise, the app is clear and very well designed....

A pleasant route that allows you to explore the Burgundy Canal.
The second part, however, is less ‘pleasant’ – lots of mud (done in October), few views, and the final stretch through an industrial area (sewage treatment plant, railway station, etc.).
But you can just do the first part and head back the other way; that’s nice too.

A short walk that we extended a little. The perfect walk for hunting season and rainy weather.
A few lovely views.
