Nièvre walks

Magnificent walk around Lac des Settons with an almost constant view of the lake. Well-marked trail with plenty of shade along the way. Very little tarmac and guaranteed peace and quiet!

With a surface area of 140ha, Lac de Saint-Agnan is a popular spot for fishing and family picnics. The tour of the lake is an easy stroll that offers a variety of views over the lake. It also offers the chance to discover a peat bog on a specially prepared path.

The Gouloux waterfall is a famous tourist site in the Morvan. This walk offers a challenging approach to the site, with a mostly forested route including a few changes in altitude.

Of the 7 large lakes in the Morvan, all of which flow into the Yonne River via various tributaries, this one, fed by the Chalaux, feeds the Crescent Reservoir. The water collected along the way is added to the Cure. This system helps to regulate the Yonne, the 'enfant terrible' of the Seine, as the people of Icaunais like to call it.

The commune of Dun-les-Places owes its name to the existence, in Celtic times, of an oppidum, a sort of stronghold built into the natural landscape and protected by two lines of defence. This hike takes in the site of this oppidum. Along the way, you'll pass through a typical Morvan landscape of meadows, ponds and deciduous and coniferous woods.

A getaway to a natural environment, with superb gardens planted in this vegetal and mineral setting. The rocks are there, the islands are in name only, but at times it seems as if we're a long way from the urbanised world.

A walk that first follows the Yonne river for several kilometres, then follows the descent of the 16 Collancelle locks.

In Montigny-en-Morvan, there are several hikes. We did a combination of two hikes: Les rives du Petit Lac (12km) and Les Rives de Pannecière (8km).

A predominantly forested route that starts along the charming river Le Vignan and quickly reaches the Dolmen Chevresse. The route then leads into the Forêt de Breuil-Chenue, where firs and beeches are more common than the oaks that once gave the uplands their name.

Ah, the Morvan! Some people call the mountains of the Morvan uplands "molehills", and while they're not very tall on this route, they do know how to tire the calves.Hiking through forests of Douglas fir, beech and other hardwoods on sandy or granite paths, with or without plant cover, but with prevalent animal and plant life, offering some very fine views from these hills with their unique horizons.

A lovely hike in the footsteps of the Maquis, alternating between hedged farmland and forest, with beautiful panoramic views, especially of Lac de Pannecière.

Walk through the forest, part of which runs alongside the River Trinquelin and moorland. Halfway along the route, you will pass the Abbaye de la Pierre-qui-Vire.

A short, easy loop to discover the Guétin Canal Bridge over the Allier and the Bec d'Allier (confluence of the Loire and Allier rivers), starting from the village of Gimouille.

A very varied loop north of Bona, towards the highest point of the Monts du Nivernais (445m).

At a height of 821 metres, Mont Beuvray offers a wide range of activities, including a visit to the archaeological site of the Bibracte oppidum, the Bibracte Museum dedicated to Gallic civilisation, and numerous walking opportunities such as the ramparts tour or long-distance hiking trails such as theGR®13orGR®131. And if, by chance, mist descends on the area at the end of your hike, the atmosphere it creates is sure to give you goose bumps.

Marked trail No. 33. Geologically, the commune of Bouhy belongs to the Forterre, a region neighbouring the Puisaye. Its village is at an altitude of 355 metres. For walkers in search of vast horizons, this dominant position gives this route its panoramic interest, to which is added the architectural interest of the many chapels encountered along the way.

A unique historical site, Bibracte was a fortified town or oppidum, built on the summit of Mont Beuvray at the end of the 2nd century. In addition to its protected natural area (labelled "Grand Site de France" within the Morvan Regional Nature Park), it offers an exceptional archaeological site. The Chemin de Maraude is a 3 km route combining viewpoints, excavation sites and walks through forests and clearings.

Marked trail No. 61.Emmanuel de La Villéon (1848-1944) was a painter of Breton origin (Fougères, where he has his museum) who lived from 1900 to 1936 in a mansion in the hamlet of Salvard. An admirer of Monet, he adopted most of the characteristics of Impressionism.This route, now enhanced with panels featuring reproductions and commentary, allows visitors to rediscover some of the places painted by the artist, including certain characteristics of the Poyaudin bocage.

A hike through woods and fields that starts at Lac des Settons and leads to Gouloux, where you can visit a clog factory (booking required) before discovering the delightful Saut de Gouloux and La Cure waterfalls further on. Take the opportunity to admire the view over this turbulent river. Return via villages and close to one of the Morvan peat bogs, at a place called Morégnon.

Forest hike in the Morvan to discover three healing springs and a chapel far from any human occupation on theGRP® route du Morvan. The route is extremely simple and very well marked in yellow.

Marked route No. 34. The village of Saint-Vérain, built on a hillside, was surrounded by fortified walls in the Middle Ages, making it one of the most powerful feudal cities in the region. Numerous remains bear witness to the city's importance, including ramparts, towers, gates, wells, a keep, etc.

A hike on the edge of the Morvan Natural Park that will take you to Mont Sabot, at the top of which you will find a Romanesque chapel. Throughout the route, you will have views of the Yonne valleys and the Morvan mountains: Bion, Sabot and Bué.

Discover the village of Saint-Loup-des-Bois, its inhabitants, the Saints-Lupéens, and the forests that surround it. You will pass by the Museum of Agricultural Machinery and Rural Life, which traces the history of agricultural machinery. In addition to these major collections in Europe, there is an astonishing and impressive collection of irons and a collection dedicated to woodworking trades (clog makers, coopers, wheelwrights, etc.).

An easy route visiting the Narvau Gorges and Waterfall, several ponds, beautiful forests, and a few fields and pastures. We will finish with a visit to the church and the panoramic viewpoint of Mont Saint-Alban.Requires a good sense of direction and, if possible, the use of the GPX track.

A pleasant short hike through forests, streams, hamlets and magnificent panoramas with, on a clear day, a view of the Auvergne volcanoes...

Sermentole and its varied forest landscapes, followed by a visit to the charming village of Asnois with its Saint-Loup church, castle, wash house and swimming spot.

This hike in the Beuvron Valley is one of the most beautiful walks in the department. This route follows the ridgeline, connecting the Chapels of Grenois and Hubans and the site of the Virgin Mary in Asnan. It offers beautiful views, especially in spring when the countryside is in bloom.

Start the hike with a visit to the Romanesque church of Saint-Révérien, a Cluniac site, then continue to the Gallo-Roman site of Compierre, where the remains of the city are still visible and explained. After passing by ponds with the Montenoison hill in your sights, the path will take you to the village of Compierre, at the top of a hill dominated by a castle with a magnificent view at its foot.

A refreshing little walk to enjoy with the family at the end of the afternoon!

A walk that immerses you in the heart of the wine-growing landscapes of the Pouilly Fumé and Pouilly sur Loire AOCs. Bring your binoculars to observe the birds along the banks of the Loire.

A delightful escape into the heart of nature, accompanied by the Cure. Magnificent and relaxing. The section along the Cure requires a bit of gymnastics on two occasions, but it is very accessible for anyone who walks regularly, so do not worry.

A very pleasant hike that passes at the foot of Toureau de Remondot (the highest point in the area), in the Saulières forest, near the Étang de l'Île, and ends by skirting the Château de Saulières and its chapel.

A beautiful escape at the gateway to the Morvan Regional Natural Park, along small paths, with landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, white Charolais cattle and Morvan houses.

This circular route will take you through varied landscapes where you will encounter water as you cross the Chalaux, stop near the Étang des Vernois, pass along the Lac de Chaumeçon and numerous small streams, which you will sometimes have to jump over! You will also pass through several hamlets. The route alternates between woodland and more open passages. The hike can be done in either direction. Apart from the first 200 metres on the D6, the hike only takes you along small, generally quiet local roads and paths.

Set off to discover two magnificent engineering structures located in Nièvre in Burgundy: the Échelle de Sardy-les-Epiry on the Canal du Nivernais and the Rigole d'Yonne. This walk follows the Canal du Nivernais along a greenway. You can admire a series of locks, 16 in total over a little more than 3 km. Your walk continues overlooking the canal, along the edge of the Rigole d'Yonne, which supplies the canal with water from Lake Pannecière.

A hike designed to showcase the small heritage of this commune in the Nièvre, located on either side of the Canal du Nivernais: castles, beautiful farms and barns, wash houses and fountains, a beautiful variety of paths and panoramic views.

This route takes you back to the time of fortified castles and knights. Built on the marshy lands of Perroy, the Château de la Motte Josserand is one of the most beautiful military constructions of the Middle Ages in the Nièvre region, with its famous adventurer Perrinet Gressard who acquired the seigneury in the 15th century.

A walk through the bocage landscape of the Nivernais region. Here, the hedges that border the meadows have been preserved, giving the surrounding countryside a certain charm. Throughout this circular route, you may see horses, donkeys and cattle grazing, the latter mainly of the Charolais breed.

Waymarked walk N° 38 In the land of the potters, there is first and foremost the clay that serves as the raw material for the craftsmen, then the water that gushes out of the clay-silica or clay-limestone soils, depending on the geology of the subsoil in this area. But there's also the beauty of nature, with its landscapes, paths framed and even marked by these hedges and their sometimes mysterious, sometimes mischievous tadpoles. They are the source of some of the legends that live in the area.

Marked trail No. 35.The commune of Bitry covers 1,746 hectares. The Ramois boundary marker is at an altitude of 326 metres, while the La Maloise river flows at the lowest point, 189 metres above sea level.Between the village and the hamlet of Les Beauchats, you can visit a chapel dedicated to Saint Marc and Saint Roc, which was restored in the 20th century.

This circular allows you to see some of the region's mills that are no longer in operation, in the commune of Ouroux-en-Morvan. It will also allow you to discover some of the commune's hamlets.

The first part of this route allows you to discover part of the commune of Ouroux-en-Morvan, passing through the hamlet of Le Plessis, then Savelot. The second part of the route takes you along the Chemin du Tacot, a single track road that ran from Corbigny to Seaulieu. You will pass the old Cœuzon station and the bridge-tunnel over the Chalaux river. You will also have the opportunity to see an almost identical full-size replica of the old Tacot locomotive. You will continue under arches covered in vegetation and finish by walking alongside the Étang d'Ouroux lake. In front of the village hall, you can also admire the blue carriage, which is unique in that it has the same metre gauge as the Tacot.

Set off to discover the traditional heritage of the wine-growing hamlets on the Saint-Andelain hill. Take the opportunity to visit the winegrowers of the Pouilly Fumé appellation and don't miss climbing to the top of the old water tower, now converted into a viewpoint, to see how far you've come and admire the view of the vineyards and the Loire.

Nestled at the bottom of the Talvanne valley, Cessy-les-Bois is classified as a Natura 2000 site due to the presence of two large bat colonies on its territory: the Greater Horseshoe Bat and the Geoffroy's Bat. Along the first two kilometres of the hike, you will find information panels explaining this local feature. In addition, a booklet is available for purchase at the Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire reception point of the Bourgogne Cœur de Loire Tourist Office.
