The Pic du Crabère is a must-see summit forming a tripoint between Haute-Garonne, Ariège and Spain. It offers a superb view of the entire Maladeta glacier and the highest peaks in Spain, including the king of the Pyrenees: Aneto! A fairly long hike, but without any technical difficulty, and with a well-marked and easy-to-follow path.

The hike starts from the car park near the "Sauth deth Pish" waterfall, after 9 km on a tarmac track. After seeing the pretty waterfall on the left as you arrive, the route starts by heading towards the bottom of the valley. There is a first, slightly steep climb through the woods, then you come out into a treeless area. The difficulty lies not in the elevation gain, but in the section between the end of the forest and the bridge that takes you to the other side, which runs along the side of the mountain on a fairly narrow path. However, if you take care, it's easy to navigate. You then come out onto a tarmac track for the descent, which is admittedly less pleasant and has a few cars passing by, but I wouldn't have done it the other way round.

Second day of the Petit Tour de Biros.From the refuge, head due east along theGR®®10to the junction at the foot of the dam (passed the previous day).Continue uphill along theGR®®10. Reach a fork at the Col de la Serre d’Araing.Head left for a round trip to the Pic de l'Har. A stunning 360° view.Then descend via theGR®®10to the Mines de Bentaillou.Head north and follow theGRP®® to the Col de la Catauère (Plateau de Rouge).Then head down theGR®®10to Eylie.This stage is only feasible when there is no snow, from late May until the mountain huts close or the first snowfall begins.

A lovely circular loop starting from Fos, between Argut-dessous and Argut-dessus, via the ridges. Views over the Saint-Béat valley. Not difficult, but depending on the season and your mood, having to make your way through the broom and ferns between points (3) and (4) may be a bit of a nuisance or quite amusing...

A short circular loop between cabins and pastures. More of a pleasant stroll than a real hike, this route has the advantage of being very accessible without compromising on the beauty of the landscape. The ease of this route also makes it very interesting for snowshoeing. GPS or Visorando app useful for certain sections.

This hike will take you to the summit of Pic de la Calabasse (2,210 m) via Col de l'Herbe Soulette and Col de la Terme. The forest road allows you to warm up, then pass through forests and large expanses of summer pastures. A short stretch along the ridge leads to magnificent views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, including Maladeta.

A lively village in the Val d'Aran, discover the valley via a pleasant circular route starting from Bossost, passing through Bausen and returning via the other side of the Garonne. There is a slight climb at the start up to Bausen. There are numerous viewpoints overlooking the peaks surrounding the valley.

A beautiful hike with no major difficulties, most of which takes place under the trees. At the summit of Tuc de Pan (1,724 m), you will discover an exceptional panorama of the Garonne valley as it enters France, as well as the Maladeta Massif, among other sights.

A wonderful discovery in the Haut-Garonne region, accessible to all from the Mourtis resort, with fabulous views all along the route.

Third and final stage of the short Tour du Biros.The return route follows a very interesting and well-marked path, passing through Col des Cos.A lovely hut with a new roof, open to the public, is available at this pass as a new hut has been refurbished for the shepherd(s). There is also a water source at this spot.A very beautiful descent until you reach the GRP® Tour du Biros.Pass by the lovely Passerelle des Pichès footbridge.You pass through the hamlets of La Peyre and Frechendech before arriving at the car park.This stage is only possible when there is no snow, from late May until the mountain huts close or the first snowfall begins.

Combine mountain hiking with discovering industrial heritage.This valley has a significant mining heritage, and the succession of reminders of this during the climb, dotted with ruins and twisted, rusty scrap metal, evokes the past importance of the heart of our mountain range.

A magnificent viewpoint over the high peaks of the Couseran. An easily accessible summit, passing by the old Bentaillou Mines and the Étang d’Araing. Please note: the return route via the Col de Clos requires a basic knowledge of navigation (especially in bad weather).

Second day of this trip to the Refuge d’Eylie. A day not to be underestimated.Classified as difficult due to an average gradient (slope) of 24% from (1) to (3). Afterwards, the GR®10 access trail – GRP® Tour du Biros – is very narrow, poorly maintained and at times dangerous due to low-lying, slippery rhododendrons: it is a north-facing slope. There are moments of respite in the woods, where the path is fairly wide and very well signposted. From the Col des Cassaings onwards, conditions improve. The highlights of this balcony trail are the numerous viewpoints from (3) to (4) and from (4) to (6).After at least 6 hours’ walking, including breaks, with 900 m ascent and 1,150 m descent, the arrival at the Ostal du Biros in Bonac is a welcome relief. From there, it’s a 25-minute drive along a very quiet road back to Sentein (E).

The highest point in the Val d'Aran and Couserans, Maubermé is often overlooked in favour of Mont Valier. However, unlike Valier, the path climbs steadily and pleasantly to Port d'Urets (and its small hut where you can spend the night), then becomes a little steeper to reach the summit, which may prove a little difficult for those who are not used to it.

A beautiful hike that is accessible to families as it is fairly short. It offers magnificent views of the Pyrenees and ends in a rather rocky environment. The views are quite dizzying for a hike of this length, but you do get to reach a peak!

A very pleasant circular with autumn colours. Only to be attempted in good weather. Splendid 360° view from the Pic d'Escalette over the surrounding peaks. Feasible in winter with good snow conditions but classified as difficult with frozen ground.

This hike allows you to reach the Pic de Cagire in a morning, offering a 360° view between the plain and the highest peaks of the Pyrenees. 07/01/2024: Hiking prohibited to the public from 1 January 2025 to 31 March 2025 by municipal decree (from Pic de L'Escalette towards Pas de l'Âne via the ridges located in the commune of Boutx). This hike is strongly discouraged in winter due to its dangerous nature, particularly between the summit of Les Parets and Col du Pas de l'Âne! See practical information.

Starting from the Col de Menté, this easy hike takes you on a circular route at the foot of the Cagire and very close to the Col du Pas de l'Âne.

Torrential streams, forests, mountain pastures, panoramic views, huts and chapels await you on this hike at the bottom of the Biros valley.

This large circular takes us through varied landscapes, discovering the riches of the Couserans. The Pic de Crabère is the remarkable highlight of this beautiful journey. From its height of 2,630 metres, you can see the high peaks of the Ariège and Luchonnais on either side, while to the south, the Aneto massif dominates the landscape. To fully enjoy this long hike, don't hesitate to stop for the night at the Étang d'Araing refuge. You'll have a front-row seat to watch the magical spectacle of the sunset over the Pic de Crabère.

First stage of the Petit Tour du Biros.From the Anglade car park, a steady climb along theGRP®® Tour du Biros to the Passerelle des Pichès, then a detour via the Chapel and the Cabane Forestière de l'Isard.Then, after returning to theGRP®®, you arrive at the Cabane d'Illau.This is followed by a steep climb up to just below the Étang d’Araing dam and finally the arrival at the Refuge Jacques Husson de l’Étang d’Araing.This stage is only feasible when there is no snow, from late May until the huts close or the first snowfall begins.

Suggestion for a shorter Tour du Biros with alternative routes.Start from the Anglade car park (Frechendech).A fairly challenging first stage with an alternative route via La Chapelle and the Maison Forestière de l'Isard.A second stage exploring an old lead and zinc mine, preceded by the ascent of the Pic de l’Har.A third, more leisurely stage, but over rough terrain, on a path damaged by fallen trees and the absence of a footbridge over a torrent.This route is only feasible when there is no snow, from late May until the mountain huts close or the first snowfall begins.

The “standard route” up the Pic du Crabère passes via the Refuge d’Araing and the Col d’Auréan. As this route is very busy during the summer months, I’m suggesting an unusual and unspoilt route here, allowing you to reach the Crabère whilst avoiding the crowds, and without any difficulty. The return journey will follow the standard route, allowing you to complete a circular route around the Étang d’Araing. This 25 km route, with 2,000 m of elevation gain, requires good stamina, but can be completed in two days with an overnight stay at the Refuge de l’Étang d’Araing.The section from (7) to (13) is feasible provided there is no snow.

A lovely, fairly challenging hike offering views of the Pyrenees.Part of the hike is along the border ridge. A good sense of direction, a GPX track and a map are strongly recommended.

The route is mainly in the shade. Only the summit is in full sun from the village of Antras. The climb up the Col de Mourères is not difficult. A beautiful walk on the Balcon du Biros

A circular walk with no real difficulty apart from the length of the route in the upper Garonne valley between Saint-Béat and Fos, passing through the villages of Arlos, Argut-dessous and Lez. Route revised in May 2022 after walking it a second time and extending the end with a short circular route to pass through the heart of the village of St-Béat.

A circular loop to climb Pic de l'Arraing via Pic de Sérau, following the pretty ridges.

Two days, exploring both sides of the cool Biros Valley through which the River Lez flows, in a very mountainous setting.One night’s stay in the hamlet of Eylie d’en Haut. The mountain refuge and dining area are separate and welcoming.Both days are spent largely on marked trails, but these are challenging, sometimes steep and often very steep.- The first day is challenging, with 1,200 metres of ascent and 900 metres of descent. Do not underestimate it. The descent from the Col des Cos is not straightforward due to the patous and the path being difficult to follow, despite the markings, as well as the crossing of the Ruisseau du Haurendech (torrent). The views make you forget these difficulties.- The second day begins with a very steep climb (25 per cent gradient). Then, the beautiful balcony path requires great caution as it is not maintained and is very narrow. After the Col des Cassaings, conditions improve. The views make you forget these difficulties.

First day of this trip to the Refuge d’Eylie. A day not to be underestimated.Set off from Sentein along an old track, then take the small road up to Bencarrech, joining the GRP® Tour du Biros. The GRP® in the Isard Valley crosses to the other bank via the Illa Maria footbridge. It then passes the Passerelle du Pichès on the right and begins a steep climb. From there, a PR® trail leads to the Col des Cos (mountain hut, fountain). This is followed by a tricky descent due to fallen trees blocking the path (PR®). After at least 6 hours’ walking, including breaks, with 1,200 m of ascent and 900 m of descent, the Eylie restaurant and bar is a welcome sight.

A beautiful outing between Ariège and Haute-Garonne, tackling the Col de Portet d'Aspet

If you enjoy spotting chamois, this route will be right up your street. It offers a splendid view of Aneto and the Luchonnais peaks.

The hike is suitable in all seasons. If there is snow, snowshoes may be necessary (depending on the depth).

The summit offers a beautiful panorama. The route takes you through the forest to the Col de l'Artigue, then gently climbs to the summit of Puech.

This looping route around the Pic du Gar and Pic de Cagire from the small village of Bezins takes you right up close to the impressive limestone cliffs and gives the Pic du Gar, which is less than 2,000 m high, an air of grandeur. Crossing the beech forest provides a shady route, with beautiful views over the valley. Access to the Pic de Cagire via the north-facing slope offers views over the plain and, in fine weather, spectacular views of the Pyrenees from the summit. This view can still be enjoyed along the ridge route.This hike can be done over two days, with an overnight stay in a hut or bivouac.Gpx trail recommended.

Magnificent ascent of the Pic du Gar via the Col de Teyech. Superb views of the surrounding valleys. A challenging hike with a lot of elevation gain but no technical difficulty.

This pretty loop was the mountain biking training ground of our local champion Élodie, French junior champion in 2001 and 2002. On foot, you will have time to enjoy this route, which will take you to viewpoints overlooking the valley, where you may be lucky enough to spot numerous deer in this area.

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hikes in the Pyrenees. The climb is long and difficult, but the panoramic views will make you forget your aching legs. Once past the azure blue Boums du Port, the Port de Venasque fault offers the most beautiful balcony overlooking the Maladeta and its lord, the Aneto. The Port de la Picade with its superb panoramic views, the Pas de l'Escalette and the Crabidès ridge complete this unforgettable hike.

A very beautiful hike in one of the most charming areas of the Luchonnaises Pyrenees. The view of Aneto from Port de Vénasque alone is worth the hike. The descent to Cirque de la Glère offers some thrills to spice things up. A very beautiful high mountain route that will delight lovers of altitude and beautiful mountain lakes.

This hike is not particularly difficult, apart from a slightly steep climb during the first kilometre, and offers superb views of the Luchonnais mountain pastures (sheep, cows, horses), the climb to Vénasque and the Crête de la Pique.

A beautiful, easy hike across the Campsaure plateau, offering a magnificent 360° panorama from its summit, the Entécade, over the Maladeta massif and notably the Aneto, the highest peak in the Pyrenees.

A challenging circular route starting from the Hospice de France.Head to the Port de Vénasque – Ascent of the Pic de Sauvegarde via the Spanish side – Return via the Pas de l'Escalette.At the Pic de Sauvegarde, breathtaking 360° views, from Bagnères-de-Luchon to the Pic d'Anéto.

A beautiful line hike, which requires you to leave a vehicle at the finish beforehand. From the village of Razecueillé, the route takes you directly to the Pic de Paloumère, offering magnificent views of the Piedmont to the north and the highest peaks to the south, east and west. The route to the finish is very varied: forestry paths, ridges, old paths that are a little forgotten and therefore poorly marked, beech forests frequented mainly by wild boar and roe deer.

You might think that this summit lacks character compared to its neighbours, but what a route from the Hospice de France! Magnificent lakes such as Lac de la Montagnette and Lacs de Vénasque. While the approach walk to Cirque de la Glère is suitable for walkers, the Montagnette valley is reserved for experienced hikers who enjoy steep slopes with aerial passages.

A beautiful route that is less frequented than those of the Étangs de Boums du Port de Vénasque or the Pic de Sauvegarde. The climb takes place in a pleasant valley, shaded in the morning. From the Soum de l'Escalette (2,466 m), the 360° panorama is magnificent. The descent begins with a beautiful ridge trail that offers magnificent scenery all along the way. This is an easy hike with fairly regular and moderate slopes for the most part.

A demanding hike through the Cirque de la Glère to the Port de la Glère, via the family-friendly Chemin de l’Impératrice. Magnificent views from the pass over Aneto and the Maladeta massif. Option to descend to Ibón de Gorgutes to cool off after the climb.

Starting from the Jouéou valley, this high-mountain hike takes you to the magnificent Cirque de la Glère, whose slopes, furrowed by numerous small streams, are dominated by the ridge marking the border with Spain and the Pic du Sacroux. Once at the Col de la Glère, an easy descent on the Spanish side leads to the Lac des Gourgoutes. A little further on, on the shoulder of the Pic de la Glère, the view over the Aneto and the Maladeta massif is a wonderful reward.

An easy hike once you've made the climb, with magnificent views of the Pyrenees.

Arbas, land of bears, paragliders and beautiful hikes! The hike I suggest follows a ridge trail and offers beautiful views of the Comminges to the north and the high peaks of the Pyrenees to the south, all without much difficulty.

This is the shortest road route from France for climbing Aneto in a (long...) day, without camping or staying in a mountain hut.

This is a beautiful circuit in the Val d'Aran, through the Vaqueira mountains to Naut and Baish de Bacivèr Lakes.Although it's a short loop, it requires an established fitness level to climb the first half of the route.The effort will be rewarded by the arrival at Lac Naut de Bacivèr, the highest point of the hike.
