From Razecueillé to Tachoires via the Pic de Paloumère (or Pic de l'Aube)

A beautiful line hike, which requires you to leave a vehicle at the finish beforehand. From the village of Razecueillé, the route takes you directly to the Pic de Paloumère, offering magnificent views of the Piedmont to the north and the highest peaks to the south, east and west. The route to the finish is very varied: forestry paths, ridges, old paths that are a little forgotten and therefore poorly marked, beech forests frequented mainly by wild boar and roe deer.

Description of the walk

- The starting point is Cap du Mail, 3 minutes south of Razecueillé. From Aspet 31160, take the D5, pass Sengouagnet, then take the D618 left towards the Menté and Portet-d'Aspet passes for around 750 m and then take the small road on the left towards Razecueillé. Leave the village above on your left and continue towards Cap du Mail (signs). You can park just above the hamlet, at the bend in the road.
- The arrival point, where you will need to leave your vehicle, is at Les Tachoirs, which you reach from Aspet 31160. At the car park before the petrol station, take the road up towards the Chapelle de Miègecoste and follow this small road for 2.7 km(EARL Les Tachoires on Google Maps). You can park a hundred metres ahead on the left, before the houses.

(D) From the car park, head downhill, entering the hamlet on the left and crossing it. Above the last house, enter the hamlet and start climbing through the woods, quickly reaching the ridge off the path.

(1) Cross the forest road and continue eastwards , keeping to the ridge. Leave any paths that may be visible (the GR®®78shown on the maps is virtually no longer used) and continue along the ridge until you reach a second forest road.

(2) Cross the forest track and turn left to join a yellow trail on the right. This path runs slightly below the ridge line, but it is preferable to the ridge itself. Continue climbing along this ridge as far as 1463.

(3) At this point, reach a meadow with few trees and cross it, then look out for the path on the right (fence), which heads south up the slope. The faint path heads east and soon rejoins the ridge at a fork.

(4) From the ridge, follow the well-marked path to the left to quickly reach the summit of the Pic de Paloumère (1608 m).

(5) Retrace your steps to the previous junction.

(4) Descend to the left, heading south-east, following the well-marked path. Go over the small pass and continue on this path, which then climbs back up to join the ridge. Follow it to reach the Col des Passagers (1475 m), where four paths meet (signs).

(6) Take the well-marked path on the left towards the Cabane de Roque Pi. Leave the hut below on the right and continue north to reach the small rounded summit of the Plan de Liet 1521 m.

(7) Continue along the more or less marked path until you reach some small pools.

(8) Turn left for a few dozen metres on the sometimes gullied path and then right again, descending steeply in a north-easterly direction. The path is sometimes marked, but not evenly or in accordance with the regulations. After a hundred metres or so, look for an isolated tree with a red mark on an aluminium background.

(9) Turn left to the north-west and descend the slope into the undergrowth. Look for the marks on the trees and join a logging road. Continue in the same direction to the Col de Hougas (1245 m).

(10) Continue up the well-cleared ridge to the Sommet de la Husse (1353 m).

(11) At the summit, the path becomes lost. You have to go down off-piste, into the fairly steep undergrowth (generally heading north) to reach an old logging road fairly quickly (6 or 7 minutes, no more) that is visible just as you reach it.

(12) Turn right up to the Col de la Husse.

(13) The track then bends to the left. Continue for less than 200 m until you come to a crossroads where a well-marked path leads off to the right.

(14) Follow this path (a very old one) as it descends steeply through magnificent undergrowth, veering gradually eastwards to finally reach the ridge.

(15) Take the track that descends to the right. Follow it to the first forest road and cross it. Then take the track that continues to the left along the edge of the meadow, leaving the gully on the right. The car you left behind is now visible. Join the small tarmac road and turn left as far as the car(A) Small car park. Les Tachoires.

Additional information following the report made on the Suricate website on 30/11/2024.
Here is the response from Suricate which I have just received and which may be useful to those who want to hike in the area:
Hello,
Thank you for your report. This GRP is a BIG problem for the FFRP and its departmental committee, who are working with the Departmental Tourism Committee to give this beautiful route a new lease of life.
We are closing this report because we are well aware of the problems encountered. This GRP is currently being studied with a view to a complete overhaul, and the federation and the local authorities are encountering major problems with the agreements on passage and the choice of paths (safety, interest, etc.).
Yours sincerely

We did this traverse from Razecueillé (departure from Cap du Mail) to "Les Tachoires" (above Aspet 31) as indicated by the author. From Col 1475m, located to the east of Tuc de la Casse 1538m, this route follows the GRP des Trois Vallées (coming from Col de Portet d'Aspet). However, this route is no longer signposted at all and therefore presents a risk for hikers who do not have a track. Thanks to the author for this essential trace.
The author's description is certainly good, but this route is essentially forested, not signposted on the GRP, and sometimes leads through ferns and the like.
The gradient and distance are greater than indicated. The main interest lies around the Pic de Paloumère, the only place where we met hikers all coming from the Col de Portet d'Aspet.
It should be noted that to the SW of Sengouagnet there are a multitude of routes for this GRP. This GRP needs to be redesigned and clarified.
We have sent notices to Suricate, IGN and the Aspet tourist office.
