The Étang d'Araing Refuge as seen from the Anglade car park

First stage of the Petit Tour du Biros.
From the Anglade car park, a steady climb along theGRP®® Tour du Biros to the Passerelle des Pichès, then a detour via the Chapel and the Cabane Forestière de l'Isard.
Then, after returning to theGRP®®, you arrive at the Cabane d'Illau.
This is followed by a steep climb up to just below the Étang d’Araing dam and finally the arrival at the Refuge Jacques Husson de l’Étang d’Araing.
This stage is only feasible when there is no snow, from late May until the huts close or the first snowfall begins.

Description of the walk

From Castillon-en-Couserans, head up the D4. Pass Bonac and Sentein, its cemetery, two roads on the right, and take the third road on the right up along the Isard towards Frechendech. Then turn right at the first footbridge over the Isard. If this car park is full, continue along the road and park there, after the bridge.

Yellow and redGRP®® accessmarkings.

(S/E) From the hikers’ car park, set off again at the bend and look out for signposts on the left, opposite a picnic area on a terrace near a building.
Then head left, due west, passing the hamlet of Frenchendech and a few barns in the hamlet of Le Peyre. You will reach a fork in the forest (elevation 873m).

(4) Continue west, then south-west to a fork (alt. 1,390 m).

(5) Leave theGRP®® to your left. Continue straight ahead, north-west towards a forest house (alt. 1380 m), the right-hand side of which is freely accessible. Water point.

(6) Turn back to the previous fork.

(5) Turn right, cross a footbridge over the Isard and climb left into the forest via the Sentier des Usses (bear). Ford the Ruisseau d'Araing. Eventually rejoin theGRP®® Tour du Biros (alt. 1413 m).

(7) Turn right and climb steeply towards the Cabane de l’Illau, which is in poor condition (alt. 1,486 m).

(8) A lovely spot for a much-needed rest before tackling the final, very difficult climb.
Resume the steep, winding ascent, heading due south. Continue the climb via natural steps through a rocky area. Area of significant erosion.
After a while, you’ll reach a fork at the foot of the dam (alt. 1,890 m).

Red and white markings forthe GR®®10.

(9) Turn right to walk along the foot of the dam. Then climb up to reach the level of the pond and the EDF refuge. Continue due west towards the refuge a little further up.
Arrive at the Jacques Husson Refuge at Étang d'Araing (alt. 1,965 m) (E).

A hike suitable for walkers. The final section is challenging but not technically difficult. Easy access to the winter section of the refuge. Clean and functional.

Snowshoe hike completed today. Without difficulty, we pass the Isard chapel and slowly arrive at the Anglade refuge. From there, snowshoes are necessary in places, then we no longer need them, with trees blocking the path. We arrive at the Illau hut, where we have to put our snowshoes back on to reach the Araing lake, and sometimes guess the path because there is so much snow. Two or three sloping sections need to be negotiated carefully with snowshoes. Arrival at the lake, splendid, immaculate, so much snow! (3h20). The return journey can be made by turning off at point 7 towards the Col de Cos to reach the Pichès footbridge (point 3). After that, it's a smooth ride back to the car park, 5h50!

A lovely walk! There were a few patches of snow once we reached the pond. I went with my dog – no problems at all.

A lovely hike, described very well. The climb up to the refuge after point 8 is quite strenuous, as mentioned. This hike is best suited to experienced mountaineers or keen walkers. There were quite a few of us at the refuge in early September.

A lovely hike; we did it in bad weather. The route is very well signposted, with several spots to reach the river at the start of the hike and a few streams along the way, which is great for cooling the dogs down (which is my case) and topping up with filtered water; however, I’m not sure if the small streams are full in summer. There are a few patches of snow off the trail at this time of year; the start of the walk is through the forest, so it’s perfect for summer, with no major difficulties.
In summer, there must be mountain dogs around!
