Circular route from Saint-Béat-Lez to Fos

A circular walk with no real difficulty apart from the length of the route in the upper Garonne valley between Saint-Béat and Fos, passing through the villages of Arlos, Argut-dessous and Lez.
Route revised in May 2022 after walking it a second time and extending the end with a short circular route to pass through the heart of the village of St-Béat.

Description of the walk

Park in the small shaded car park on the banks of the Garonne at the southern exit of St-Béat along the RN125, just after the bridge.

(S/E) Do not follow the N125 but turn right onto Rue du Faubourg, which forms part of theGR®86. At number 76, you can see two Garonne flood marks (including the one from June 2013) on the doorframe.

(1) At the end of the street, continue right uphill along Chemin de la Rouère.

(2) At the end of the path, near the hamlet of Ladivert, leave theGR®86, which climbs to the right, and take the path that descends steeply between the houses and the village road. At the bottom, after less than 100 metres of descent, turn right. Pass the cemetery and continue to the T-junction at the end of the road.

(3) Turn right onto the path that leads to the foot of the mountain, part of which has recently been gravelled. Veer left and negotiate two hairpin bends.

(4) Ignore the track on the left leading back to the D125 (cycle route) and head straight on to continue following the foot of the mountain, passing close to the hamlet of Millas in the commune of Arlos (drinking water fountain). On leaving the hamlet, continue along this path at the foot of the mountain.

(5) After a short climb, with the small waterfalls of the Ruisseau de la Batch on your left, rejoin theGR®10after crossing the stream via an arched bridge. Continue along the mountain-side path to reach the canal, then follow it to the right for 400 m.

(6) Cross the canal. Go round the roundabout on the left: be careful, there is no protected crossing at this point. Head towards the village of Fos, staying on theGR®10trail.

(7) Opposite the Chapelle du Batan, turn left onto the small road.

(8) At the wash house, take the footbridge on the left across the Garonne and continue slightly to the right for a few dozen metres along the street opposite.

(9) Turn left between the houses onto a path with pebble steps to reach the Chemin d'Argut above. Follow the tarmac road to the left until it ends at a cross (Christ d'Arrieuet)

(10) Turn right onto the path that climbs through the undergrowth, crosses the Rimbat stream via a hairpin bend and opens out onto a balcony overlooking the Garonne valley, before reaching Argut-dessous.

(11) At the fork in front of the town hall, continue by turning right-left-right-left through the village’s narrow streets to rejoin the path through the woodland.

(12) At the end of the descent and before reaching the RD44e, turn right onto the path which climbs steeply in places and is made very wet by a nearby spring. When you reach the first houses in Lez, head down towards the church and the cemetery, which you leave on your left, and cross the torrent via the bridge.

(13) Turn immediately left onto Rue Jeanne Couret and leave it behind, following the cycle path that runs under the road leading to the Saint-Béat tunnel. Follow the edge of the Argut road, passing in front of the secondary school

(14) At the crossroads, head straight on along Route de la Tignerie (follow the signs for the Tourist Office). Walk down to Place Galliéni, lined with lime trees. Make your way to the old bridge.

(15) Cross the Garonne via the bridge and turn left onto Avenue Galliéni (home to the Marshal’s birthplace), which runs through the village and its shops. On leaving the town centre, follow the Garonne and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

No real difficulty apart from a few short steep sections and the relatively long duration of the hike.
If it has snowed at low altitudes (< 500 m), the route is suitable for snowshoes outside urban areas.
In winter, don’t set off too late, so you can enjoy the sunshine (if there is any) for most of the walk, particularly on the return leg from Fos to Saint-Béat via Argut-dessous.
There are several fountains along the route where you can top up your water supplies (at some of them) or quench your dog’s thirst if they’re with you.

Worth a visit

Saint-Béat Tunnel.
Fos Dam.
Pont du Roi bridge over the Garonne on the French-Spanish border.
Melles, the village where bears were reintroduced to the Pyrenees in 1996.
Mourtis resort (snowshoeing).

Hello everyone.
We went on this hike in lovely weather – quite warm for the season – and it was a superb, varied walk along beautiful paths, offering a glimpse into life in the mountains in days gone by (ruins of buildings), which must not have been easy. Just a quick note: between points 9 and 10, part of the path had turned into a stream for about 40 metres – watch out for slippery patches! Otherwise, a lovely circular route – thanks for sharing.

In the villages, the route description is disappointing and lacks detail. You have to look around a bit, but it’s not enough to get lost.
A pleasant and enjoyable walk overall.

Hello, I’d like to clarify something about this hike: we did indeed cover 17 km, but the only snag was that our GPS devices malfunctioned. I therefore offer my sincere apologies.

Hello,

We did the route a week before you, using two different GPS devices, and (because we visited the villages along the way) we clocked up just over 15 km!
However, I agree with you that the walk must be even more enjoyable in the sunshine, which we didn’t have!
In any case, this circular route isn’t difficult, and it shows that these mountain foothills were once pastures or terraced gardens with dwellings that are now in ruins, all overgrown with vegetation.

Please note that this route is not 14 km but 17 km; this can be a problem in some cases, as it involves an extra 3 km, and in the mountains at that. At the end of the route, be careful with the signposting, which can be misleading – there is just one signpost indicating three different directions. Apart from that, it’s a great hike with lovely scenery, best done in summer as much of it is through woodland.

For us, following the route as closely as possible, with a 610-metre elevation gain, the distance is roughly 14.5 km.
Otherwise, a nice little hike at the foot of the mountain and on either side of the valley, which we overlook.
We’d like to do it again when the sun’s out a bit more.

A lovely route. Worth doing at any time of year. You’ll need to allow a bit of extra time as there’s roadworks on part of the route: they’re building a cycle path. There are piles of earth blocking the path and contractors are pouring concrete. I think these are the ‘Chemins de la Liberté’ that link France to Spain. If anyone can confirm this.
