Pic de Crabère from Labach

The Pic du Crabère is a must-see summit forming a tripoint between Haute-Garonne, Ariège and Spain. It offers a superb view of the entire Maladeta glacier and the highest peaks in Spain, including the king of the Pyrenees: Aneto! A fairly long hike, but without any technical difficulty, and with a well-marked and easy-to-follow path.

Description of the walk

From the N125, at the Tour du Sériail, take the D44H towards the village of Melles. Cross the village and continue to the end of the D44H to reach the hamlet of Labach, where you can park in the car park for hikers.

The hike follows the GR®10 to the Col d'Auéran.

(S/E) From the car park, head east on the GR®10 along the small road from Esponos de Sacou until it ends. Cross this hamlet (Simon), continuing south-east on the GR®10 trail, alternating between summer pastures and woodlands.

(1) After Camp de l'Ours (bivouac), leave the path climbing to the left and enter the Forêt des Sestagnes to reach the Cascade d'Auède, following the stream of the same name.

(2) When you reach the waterfall, cross the stream and head south-southeast. Continue for about 1.5 km until you leave the forest. You will arrive at a large mountain pasture plateau. Continue on the GR®10 trail towards the southeast.

(3) At an altitude of 1,930 m, leave the trail on the left leading to the Étang d'Uls (you can access it, see the nearby section) and continue south towards the Pas du Bouc.

(4) At Pas du Bouc, continue south-east (still on the GR®10) to Col d'Auéran, on a relatively flat section.

(5) At the Col d'Auéran, leave the GR®10 and take the path on the right (south), which climbs in countless switchbacks to the summit of the Pic de Crabère. The climb is steep but not technically difficult in the absence of snow.

(6) From the summit, turn around and return to the car park via the same route you took on the way up. (S/E)

Worth a visit

At point (3), you can make a short detour to the Étang d'Uls via a short 2 km round trip with very little elevation gain.
