Élodie's loop starting from Burgalays

This pretty loop was the mountain biking training ground of our local champion Élodie, French junior champion in 2001 and 2002. On foot, you will have time to enjoy this route, which will take you to viewpoints overlooking the valley, where you may be lucky enough to spot numerous deer in this area.

Description of the walk

By car, drive through the village towards the top, continue straight ahead and park at Place des Molles. At the eastern end of this small square, you will see two signs for hikers, an old water mill undergoing restoration and a micro biodiversity area. Nowadays, it is best to park on arrival at the entrance to the village, on your right:

-1) Car park at the statue of the goddess of water.

-2) "Simone" car park

(S/E) Take Rue de la Bayle for about 50 metres, then continue straight ahead on the dirt track (GR®86). Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork in the road at Soueste. The route is easy to follow, but be sure to follow the red and white markings to avoid getting lost at certain junctions. The slope is gentle and you will cross two streams.

(1) At Soueste, enjoy a beautiful view of the valley from the Notre-Dame chapel.
Leave the GR®86 and turn right at the foot of the basin (where you can fill your water bottle).

(2) Ignore the path downhill on your right and continue straight ahead to reach two hairpin bends under the beech trees that lead to the forest track.

(3) Turn right and follow this forest track to a grassy plateau.

(4) At the end of this plateau, take thefirst path downhill on the right and join another plateau called Castelfort.

(5) The path turns sharply to the right, heading north. Before starting the entirely paved descent to the village of Burgalays, take the time to stop on the small hill on the left in the narrow passageway at the height of the cable blocking the passage of livestock in summer. You will then be in front of a splendid panorama, with a view to the north over the villages of the valley and the Pic du Gard. Continue the descent carefully on the wet cobblestones and return to the Place d'es Molles (S/E).

Shaded trail at point 1 with a small church offering beautiful views, a water source and picnic tables. At the top, there is a meadow and views of the valley. The descent is quite steep!

An unexpected discovery. The village of Burgalays is well worth a visit. Located far from any busy roads, it is beautifully maintained by its residents.
La Boucle d'Elodie is a charming route that follows stone paths and passes by pretty stone barns, all in the shade of the forest trees. It's perfect for hot summer days.
Many thanks to JA, with whom we had a lovely chat on the way back and who had the great idea of directing us to the village mills, which are not to be missed!

A beautiful walk along pretty, often stony, shaded paths, with shadows and streaks of light in the undergrowth and clear views of sunny glades dotted with huts. The panoramic views are magnificent, overlooking the Pique Valley and stretching far beyond. Don't miss the restored water mills at the start or end of the walk. The small canals connecting them are well maintained, as is the rest of the village. Old millstones are still there. A real little nature park that showcases this beautiful hydraulic installation.

A beautiful hike with a fairly gentle climb and a descent on a paved but very steep slope! Two beautiful viewpoints: the chapel at point 1 and the summit with a beautiful field ideal for a picnic with a view of the valley (Binos opposite, where we are staying in a lodge, Cierp-Gaud on the right). The route is mostly shaded.

A beautiful walk done counterclockwise, enhanced at the beginning by a climb to the Soubac hut for a picnic (round trip to the point marked 1000m on the IGN map). In this direction, at point 3, due to a lack of attention and despite the GPS track, we "forgot" to leave the track to descend towards Souesté, which meant we had to make a small U-turn.
Very pleasant in all seasons, and probably an ideal snowshoe route (not tried).
Burgalays is a pretty and pleasant village (thanks to the residents, elected officials and town hall staff).
