Pic du Gar and Pic de Cagire via the ridges

This looping route around the Pic du Gar and Pic de Cagire from the small village of Bezins takes you right up close to the impressive limestone cliffs and gives the Pic du Gar, which is less than 2,000 m high, an air of grandeur. Crossing the beech forest provides a shady route, with beautiful views over the valley. Access to the Pic de Cagire via the north-facing slope offers views over the plain and, in fine weather, spectacular views of the Pyrenees from the summit. This view can still be enjoyed along the ridge route.
This hike can be done over two days, with an overnight stay in a hut or bivouac.
Gpx trail recommended.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park at the entrance to Bezins, climb up to the village, cross it and head west to join the path leading to the Pic de Cagire (signposted in yellow).

(1) At the Rocher Superbère, head left up a steep but shady climb through beech forest. Reach a fork in the road at marker 889.

(2) Continue straight ahead, then turn right, south-east, and climb steeply to reach the Col de Teyech (alt. 1460 m).

(3) The path veers to the right over a ridge and then through a steep valley. Reach a fork in the path. Go right, south-west, and you will reach the Pic du Gar (elevation 1756). Note that the IGN and OSM maps have switched the names of the Pic de Gar and the Pic Saillant!

(4) From the Pic du Gar, make a U-turn. At the junction you passed earlier, head uphill to climb Pic Saillant (elevation 1785).

(5) Join the path (PR® Yellow markings) that heads east and follows the ridge through the woods. At the end of the woods, in the open area, don't miss the path directly to the right, which is not very visible (yellow markings on a post).

(6) Continue down towards the valley. Follow this ridge path and, heading south, reach the Col de Caube (elevation 1335).

(7)Take a path to the left, heading south-east for about 90 m.

(8) Do not pass the Col de Caube hut, but turn left, north-east, onto a forest track (GRP®), which leads to the Cabane d'Arguenos. The only water source on this walk is at the fountain near this hut.

(9) Continue along the Route Forestière du Col de Caube for approximately 450 m.

(10) Continue straight ahead, unmarked, on the Route Forestière du Col de Caube as far as the car park, where there are directional signs.

(11) From here, head completely right (south-east) up the ridge to reach the Cabane de Juzet via a wide, very steep path (GRP®).

(12)Cross the grassland, then enter the forest again and leave it for good at around 1550m. The stony path climbs steeply, then becomes gentler before reaching a pass on the Crête du Cagire.

(13) Go left along a path on a grassy slope to reach the Pic du Cagire to the north-east.

(14) Return to the pass.

(13) Follow the well-marked path across the slope of the Pique Poque summit. It is also possible to stay on the ridge to cross this summit. Descend to the Col du Pas de l'Âne (elevation 1708).

(15) Follow the well-marked path heading south-west. This is a very rocky path and is not recommended in wet weather or when there is snow. Despite the short distance, progress is not easy and it can take a long time to reach the Sommet des Parets (elevation 1869).

(16) Continue along the ridge and leave it before reaching the next summit.

(17) At around 1850m, take a track to the right, heading west. This faint track leads to the edge of the wood, where there are a few cairns. Arrive at the Cabane de la Manolette, surrounded by a temporary cattle pen.

(18) Continue along the ridge path and, much further down, reach the Cabane de Caube and immediately come to the junction you passed on the outward journey.

(8) Continue straight ahead along the opposite route to the Col de Caube, which you also passed on the outward journey.

(7) Go completely left, southwards, along a wide shady path and reach a fork in the road.

(19) Continue right on a path (PR®), north then west, the descent is steep, leading to the Refuge de Plansous (elevation 930).

(20) Take the path below the track, which shortens the descent by cutting a bend.

(21) Further on, cross the track (signposted). Follow the GR®86 to reach the Ruisseau d'Argelès, which leads to the Rocher de Superbère, the crossroads of the 1st loop, which you passed on the outward journey.

(1) The wide balcony path on the left offers a lovely view of Bezins. Take the opposite route to the outward journey and return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

This hike can be completed over two days, with an overnight stay in a hut or bivouac. However, the only watercourse is the Ruisseau d'Argelès near Bezins, and although there are many huts open along the way, there is only water at the Cabane d'Arguenos (9). Make sure you have everything you need (filter, disinfectant tablets). During this hike in May 2025, the water flow at the fountain was already low. Contact the Office National des Forêts or Arguenos town hall for information about a summer route.

This massif, which is very popular with deer and livestock, also harbours a huge number of ticks. It's essential to have at least one tick remover with you.
