Allier (Hautes-Pyrénées) walks

This easy hike south-east of Tarbes offers views of the Pic de Midi de Bigorre and Montaigu mountain ranges and takes you through typical Pyrenean villages. The hike follows sections of small roads with little traffic. The description and map are essential as there are many turn-offs.

This is a beautiful family circular on the heights of the village of Montgaillard. It will allow you to discover beautiful views of the Tarbes plain and the Haut-Adour valley, with the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and Montaigu as a backdrop! As you climb up to an ancient Roman oppidum, follow historic paths or stroll through the village streets, you will also get a glimpse of the region's past.

Orignac has a rich history, as evidenced by the Castériou site, believed to be an ancient Roman fortified camp. The 12th-century church, built on a hillock and surrounded by a circular cemetery, indicates the existence of a defensive enclosure in the Middle Ages. A lignite mine, south of the village, was in operation until 1947. Animal fossils have been found there. These include mammals, the oldest from the Tertiary period, including the gracile hipparion, ancestor of the horse.

Observe the traditional architecture of the Bigourdan houses in Orincles and their pebble walls along an easy route, which can be enjoyed by the whole family over half a day while strolling. From the top of the hills, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Pyrenees. This walk can be done in just under two hours at a brisk pace.

A hike through the Orleix woods to the Tower of Oléac-Debat.

Hike in the Bois du Commandeur in Ibos and Bordères-sur-l'Échez along the Souy river.The route is located between the D817 road from Pau and the D2 road from Bordères to Pintac, mainly using forest paths and trails. A beautiful, easy circular path near the small village of Gez-ez-Angles, located a few kilometres from Lourdes. You will walk along an open ridge to the small summit of Aubuchous, where you can enjoy a wide panorama of the foothills and the Pyrenees mountain range, before returning to the village via a more wooded path.

A circular starting from the Clock Tower in Bagnères-de-Bigorre to the Château de l'Angle, the village of Pouzac and back through the forest, the hamlet of Gailleste and the fountains. Pass by Saint-Vincent Church, the majestic trees of Parc des Vignaux and the Town Hall, then visit the remains of an old marble workshop by the Adour River and climb up to Château de l'Angle with a view of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Descend towards the village of Pouzac via the Virgin of Notre-Dame de la Paix, cross the village to visit the Church of Saint-Saturnin, listed as a Historic Monument. Return via the beautiful forest tracks to descend and cross the hamlet of La Gailleste. Reach Bagnères-de-Bigorre via the Ferruginous Fountain and the Green Fountain.

Starting from the thermal baths, a circular route, with dry feet on small roads, to go around Bédat and discover the valley behind Bagnères-de-Bigorre with views of the hamlets and villages, the non-mountainous landscape of the Pyrenees.

Enjoy the beautiful scenery from the summit of Monné while passing through the Vallon de Salut, the Allées Dramatiques and the Col du Tucou, and descending not far from the Croix de Manse.A moderate hike with no significant difficulties.

A walk steeped in local history. Starting at a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, a pleasant path leads to the 14th-century Château de Mauvezin de Gaston Phébus. Take a break on this rocky outcrop, which offers remarkable 360° views. The return to the abbey follows a downhill path through the woods.

The route starts at the top of the Ger hill in Ibos and takes you to the Menhir on the Ger plateau. After entering the woods, the route becomes shaded and you will walk up the Géline. A lovely hike over the mountains from Bagnères-de-Bigorre. This hike requires a minimum sense of direction, although there were many signposts on the day of my hike. Warning A VR indicates a difficult path between (12) and (14): forestry work has been carried out, causing considerable damage to the forest path. Take extra care and use the GPX track.

This is a lovely, challenging route starting from a pass above Bagnères-de-Bigorre, which takes you to the Col du Lhéris. This route is also suitable for snowshoeing. This route is accessible in all seasons, except after heavy rain, as the trails become very muddy.

This is an off-the-beaten-track hike that takes you up two small peaks near Lourdes.A good sense of direction is necessary for the climb to Pic du Jer. Do not undertake this hike in rainy weather.

This summit offers a beautiful view of Pic du Montaigu, a prominent peak in the Pyrenees range overlooking the Bigorre Valley.

A country route with sections through woodland. A pleasant and varied walk, both in terms of the paths and the landscapes.

A short walk to warm up, but not recommended in wet weather. Nice view from the top.

Tour of the Cité Saint-Pierre via the Béout ridge, passing by the summit cross and the old cable car station with views of Lourdes, the Gave de Pau and the start of the Vallée des Gaves.This hike in a wild area, with little or no signposting and trails that are difficult to see in summer and overgrown with ferns (especially on the descent), makes it accessible only to "adventurers" over the age of 10 who are not afraid of discovering this little summit!

Short hike in the hills above Lourdes. The route is very quiet but well worth a look. It follows the northern ridge, which is the longest and has the greatest elevation gain. From the main summit at 791m, where a cross has been erected, there is a 360° view of the Lourdes region. From the second summit at 719m, there is a viewpoint with the old Béout cable car installation. A little further on is the entrance to the cave known as the "Gouffre de Lourdes", which is 82m deep.

This ridge hike offers views over a large part of the central Pyrenees. It should only be attempted when there is no thick, unstable snow. The return via the village of Ourdon requires a good sense of direction.

This is a physically demanding hike, reserved for experienced hikers or trail runners. The elevation gain is very significant over a relatively short distance. It is advisable to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun, as a significant part of the route is exposed. Protection from wind and rain is also strongly recommended.
