Park on Place d'Astarac in Tournay.
(S/E) Head east on the D817 between the Crédit Agricole and the Post Office. 100 metres further on, go straight on towards Peyraube on the D20 and you’ll arrive at Place Denagiscarde with its small fountain, children’s play area and shaded benches.
(1) Turn left onto Rue de la Fontaine, staying on the D20 towards Peyraude. Pass the Foyer Jean Cadorne run by the ASEI and continue to the end of the street.
(2) Turn right, still on the D20, and pass a white statue of the Virgin Mary on your left. The road climbs slightly. As you come out of the bend, pass a bench on your right.
(3) Turn right onto Chemin des Pierres, which starts between the houses and continues to climb through the meadows. Leave the tarmac and continue along a grassy path. Enter the undergrowth and, after a slight bend to the right, you’ll come to a footpath. Take it to the left and continue climbing gently.
After about 400 m, the path joins Rue de la Côte and leads to a cluster of houses.
(4) Turn left onto Chemin de Lahitte. Go to the end of the path and, 50 m before reaching the house, look out for a path climbing up to your right.
(5) Take this and head up through the woods along the Chemin du Solidet. After about 400 m, you’ll come to a clearing where you can see the Tournay upper reservoir. Go round it on the right to get a view of the village of Tournay. Continue along the path, which gradually turns into a track and descends. After a few houses on your right, you’ll reach Rue de la Côte. Turn left onto it and follow it for 20 m.
(6) At the junction, continue straight on along the D28 towards Burg. Immediately turn right onto the path that runs alongside the houses on the right. The path soon turns into a track and climbs. After two hairpin bends, continue until you reach the D20. You will catch glimpses of the Pyrenees to your right. Continue along the D20 until you reach the ridge.
(7) At the junction where there is a wayside cross, turn right onto the Chemin de la Lande.
The Pyrenees are on your right.
Walk past a reception hall on your right and pass between several houses. At the last house with its blue gate, the tarmac road turns into a path that continues through the meadows. 400 m past the houses, a farm comes into view on your left and a path appears. Turn right. The Pyrenees are now in front of you. After 600 m, you’ll reach the Cami de Castéra Auzon.
(8) The wooden sign points to Castéra on the left. Turn left and you’ll reach the junction with the D511, where there’s a bus shelter. Turn right and enter the village of Castéra-Lanusse.
(9) At the junction, turn left, passing through some new housing estates, until you reach the town hall. Walk alongside it and, on its right, you’ll find a rest area with a viewpoint. You can take a short break here, using the telescopic tubes to view the main peaks of the Pyrenees.
(10) Once you’ve rested, head back to the previous junction.
(9) Take the second road on the left, towards Lanespede, on the D134, for about 600 m.
(11) Leave the tarmac road and take a forest track on the right. Enter the woods and continue straight ahead. Pass a pig farm and keep going straight ahead. Further on, you’ll come to some wooden signposts again. Keep going straight ahead towards Tournay. Shortly after a clearing, Les Pyrénées will appear on your left. The path gradually becomes tarmac and descends to the left.
(12) Look for a path on your right that climbs up through the meadows. Be careful, it is only marked by the meadow fences. 50 m after the bend, a telephone pole on the right-hand side confirms you are heading in the right direction. The path gradually becomes clearer, with the forest on the left and the meadows on the right. You will come to a fork.
(13) Take the path leading off to the left. Walk down through the woods, which occasionally offer glimpses of the mountains to the left. 800 m further on, the Chemin du Cagnoulet comes into view and houses appear. Leave the woods and you will see a block of flats and houses on your right. Continue straight on until you reach the D817.
(14) Cross it carefully and head towards the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Tournay. Pass the car park and the bridge, then turn left into the park.
(15) Why not take a second break on a bench near the Arros.
Head back towards the D817.
(14) Turn left onto Avenue de Toulouse. Walk past the pétanque court and the pala wall. You can also take a break here.
(16) At the junction with Route de Burg, turn left onto Rue de la Causserie.
(17) At the junction by the cemetery, turn right onto Rue Germain Bonnecarrère.
(18) Turn left onto Rue Lacrampe Loustau.
You can stop near the Church of Sainte-Étienne de Tournay. There are more benches here for a possible fourth break.
After the car park, you’ll arrive in front of the nursery school; turn right onto Rue Perret Geoffroy, continue and cross the D817. Turn into Rue Lordat and, at the end, turn right. Continue straight on along Rue Tramezaygues until you reach the Francis Jammes house.
(19) Then turn right and you’ll reach Place d’Astarac (S/E).
You can finally take a rest on a bench in the shade of the market hall.
