Exploring Tarbes

The starting point is in the Arsenal district. Park in the spaces on Avenue des Forges.

(S/E) Head towards the pedestrian underpass between the two buildings. On the other side of the railway line, continue to Rue Cougot, then Rue Joseph Nelli and Rue du Docteur Roux towards Saint-Jean Cemetery. Go round it on the left towards Sainte-Thérèse Church. Take Rue Michelet to reach Rue des Carmes on the right, continuing to the Halle Marcadieu.

(1) At Place du Marcadieu, take Rue Jean Pellet to reach the Foirail. Walk round it to reach Rue Lamartine. Walk past the town hall via the small Rue Saint-Pierre.

(2) From the Town Hall, at the start of Rue Brauhauban, cross the courtyard of the Hôtel Brauhauban and continue to the prison. Turn left to head back towards the Town Hall and carry on south along Rue Desaix towards the Carreau de la Halle.

(3) Once you reach the Marché Brauhauban, head further south, go round the Halle, pass by the Théâtre des Nouveautés and join the Allées Leclerc.

(4) From the equestrian statue of Marshal Foch, walk alongside the 1st RHP barracks until you reach Avenue du Régiment de Bigorre, then head north.

(5) After the entrance to the stud farm, take the Cours de Reffye and head towards the Passage Bruzaud Grillé, the Departmental Archives, the Hôtel du Département and the Prefecture.

(6) At the corner of the Ayguerote (former hospital), walk past the Museum of the Resistance and Deportation on your right. At the next junction on the right, continue along Rue Petite de l’Hôpital.

(7) From the Cathedral, head towards Rue de la Victoire via Rue de la Préfecture.

(8) After the Foch Museum, continue towards the Lycée Théophile Gautier until you reach the fountain in Place de Verdun. Turn onto Avenue du Maréchal Foch, the main shopping street. Turn left off it, before Galeries Lafayette, to reach Saint-Jean Church. Return to Place de Verdun via Rue Brauhauban, Rue Ferrère and Rue Georges Clémenceau.
Then head north along Rue Massey to the former gendarmerie.

(9) Enter the Jardin Massey, then leave it briefly to the right to go to the Carmel (exhibition hall). Return to the garden by walking round it, past the Louis Aragon media library. Cross the park diagonally. Walk up onto the pavements/footbridges above the underpass and head for the car park on the right (S/E).

Dogs are not allowed in Massey Gardens. If necessary, it is easy to walk round it without going inside.

Inside the cathedral, look for the will of Louis XVI engraved on a marble plaque in a chapel near the entrance on the right (push the door open).
