Ascent of Hautacam from Geu

This is a physically demanding hike, reserved for experienced hikers or trail runners. The elevation gain is very significant over a relatively short distance. It is advisable to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun, as a significant part of the route is exposed. Protection from wind and rain is also strongly recommended.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park near the town hall in Geu. It is also possible to park near the church.

(S/E) Head north-east towards the town hall and, at the corner, turn right onto Camin deths Arials.

(1) When the street turns left, continue straight ahead on a path. Join the Boucle Geu-Lias (Route No. 1, shown on OSM but not on IGN). Follow this path uphill into the forest. Cut across a track before rejoining it further up.

(2) Follow the track to the right (south) to reach the Route de Lias.

(3) Follow the road to the right. Ignore a path coming from the left and arrive at the Croix du Pouey.

(4) Leave the road and take a sharp left onto a path marked in yellow (Route No. 3: Boucle Ousté-Lias; sign indicating access to EDF pylon No. 51). Head east and climb up to pylon No. 51.

(5) Pass under the high-voltage line and continue straight ahead on the path towards a clearly visible ridge. Head south-east, pass directly below the Tuquet de Lhési and climb up to reach the ridge at an unnamed pass.

(6) Bear right (south) and climb diagonally, skirting Rocher de la Boup on the right. Continue south-east and climb to an intersection just below the summit of Soum des Lits.

(7) Continue south-west then south-south-east. Leave Soum de Trézères on your left and climb up to a hut.

(8) Then turn left (south-southeast), ignore a track that branches off to the right and follow the path that quickly leads to the summit.

(9) Return via the same route in the opposite direction to the car park near Geu Town Hall (S/E).

Notes

An alternative return route appears possible on the map, via Pic Aigu and then Chemin de Saint Pastous. This alternative is strongly discouraged as the path disappears into ferns and brambles between the two (August 2025).
