Description of the walk

Park at Place d'Astarac in Tournay.

(S/E) Head west on the D817, between Café La Bastide and the tobacconist’s, until you reach Rue d’Arros, about 50 metres away.

(1) Turn right onto this pedestrian street, known locally as the Chemin des Écoliers. At the end of the street, walk past the secondary school and continue for 400 m until you reach the junction with the RD20.
Watch out for traffic; although light, there is some.

(2) Turn left towards Peyraube, passing a white statue of the Virgin Mary on your left. The road climbs slightly. As you come out of the bend, you’ll pass a bench on your right. There’s still time to rest for a while. Leave the village and continue along the D20 for 500 m until you reach the “Judera” Calvary.

(3) Turn right onto the road, which climbs slightly. After a bend to the left, look out for a path 200 m further on that branches off to the right up the slope.

(4) Follow this path, which climbs steeply to your right and then to your left, before the slope levels off. Continue straight on through the forest until you reach a farm, which you go round to the right. During the climb, the Pyrenees gradually come into view on your right.
After the farm, the path turns into a track. A new path emerges on your left.
Take it and climb through the forest along the Chemin du Solidet. After about 400 m, you’ll reach a clearing where you can see the Tournay upper reservoir.
Go round it on the right to get a view of the village of Tournay. Continue along the path, which gradually turns into a track and heads downhill. After a few houses on your right, you’ll reach Rue de la Côte.

(5) Turn right and continue along Rue de la Côte. Head uphill, leaving the houses on your left. Les Pyrénées is now on your left. Continue for 800 m. As you leave the forest, you’ll find yourself amongst a few houses. Leave the path on your right, pass a fire hydrant and continue straight on for 100 m.

(6) Take the path that slopes gently down to your right after the two small houses on the right.
Continue downhill and, after a bend to the left, houses will come into view. You are now on Chemin de la Serre; the footpath gives way to a tarmac road.

(7) At the junction of Chemin de la Serre, Rue de la Serre and Rue de la Côte, turn right to head back down towards Tournay. Continue down to the junction with Rue du Plagnon. Turn right again and continue downhill.

(8) At the junction, ignore Rue du Plagnon, which descends in front of you, and turn right onto Rue du Belvédère. You’ll have a view of the village with the Pyrenees in the background. Now’s the time to take a break on the bench provided for just that purpose.

(9) After the bench, take the wooden steps on your left, which lead you along a grassy path to the parish hall and out onto Place Denagiscarde. The children can play for a while and you can take another break on one of the benches.

(10) Leave the square and continue straight on along Rue Gerde, then straight on again along Rue Adolphe Pédebidou until you reach Place d’Astarac (S/E).

Hello, a lovely little walk on this sunny day. The route is fairly easy to follow if you pay attention to the descriptions and the map on the app. The ground is damp at this time of year but not muddy. A beautiful view of the Pyrenees and the surrounding area in winter. We’ll be back in the spring to walk it the other way round. Thanks to Flo.

A lovely autumn route taken on 16 September 2024. The bench mentioned is situated a little way up on the right. We picked some porcini mushrooms.

Hello,
That’s right, there are no signposts because this is a walk I do for my own enjoyment and which I wanted to share.
If you spot any errors or missing information, please let me know and I’ll make the necessary changes.
Thank you for your feedback.

I replied briefly that some of the signposts were missing from the route, in particular the bench mentioned in the guide. Any further details? I can’t go into specifics, but I fully agree with the comment made by another walker, namely: “However, there is a lack of signposting that could prevent people from taking a wrong turn on one or two occasions.”

This walk, which is already pleasant in winter provided the ground isn’t too wet, must be very lovely in fine weather when the trees are in leaf.
However, there is a lack of signposting, which could prevent you from taking a wrong turn on one or two occasions.

The directions aren't very accurate or up to date. For example, they mention a bench that is no longer there.
