A walk in the Vosges foothills, under the trees and with a beautiful view of Abreschviller. I wanted to revisit a walk I used to do regularly with my parents when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, the storm of 1999 took its toll and the path has been completely washed away in places. The Club Vosgien has redefined a new route from Saint-Léon. I preferred to go back 45 years and offer you my retro walk along the original path.

There are several routes leading to the Cirque de Morgon. The ones I’ve taken so far are the paths starting from the Fontaine de l’Ours and the Grand Clos. This one is the steepest and most challenging. However, it offers a huge advantage when it’s hot: it’s completely shaded by the trees. On the other hand, the ground is uneven and slippery, and there’s a ladder which might put off those who are afraid of heights.

Listed as a Regional Nature Reserve, the Lachaussée pond has remained in its natural state. Many birds have made their home there or stop off during their migration. It is a haven of peace for flora and fauna.Please note: it is forbidden to stray from the existing paths, particularly around the ponds, otherwise you may be liable for a hefty fine.

This lake is a reserve with sensitive natural environments, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.It is a wild environment except on its northern shore, where there are leisure centres that are very pleasant during the summer months, but don't be put off by the crowds and don't hesitate to pay for parking.

A leisurely bike ride along the Moselle with a few stops to visit the caves carved out by the Moselle in the karst rock when its level was much higher.

A mountain bike ride between Vaux and Gravelotte through an area fortified by the Germans between 1912 and 1916 to protect Metz. Remember that at that time (from 1870 until 1918), Alsace and Moselle were part of the German Empire.

A lovely walk that climbs steeply through the forest, passes through the town, runs alongside the new facilities by the lake and, unfortunately (there’s no getting round it), follows the RD954 for 500 metres.

From the pretty little lake of Saint-Apollinaire, towards the Aiguilles de Chabrières. The route offers magnificent 360° views of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Embrunais and the Ecrins. This hike is one of the routes leading to the Aiguilles de Chabrières (I’ve described another one starting from the Réallon resort). For me, this is the most difficult one because the climb is steep right from the start and doesn’t let up until the Pic de Chabrières.

Towards the Col du Morgonnet and the beautiful little Jas hut via a path that leads off the beaten track.

A walk from the church at Lesménils to the Signal du Xon, where fierce fighting took place from 13 to 18 February 1915. The cross at the Signal du Xon was unveiled in October 1922.

A forest walk with some stunning views of the Vosges foothills. Visit the ruins of three castles: Haut-Barr, Grand Geroldseck and Petit Geroldseck, as well as the Brotsch Tower (built in 1897 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Club Vosgien’s founding in Saverne), and the cave.

This hike connects the two lakes via a forest path that is not always easy to find, stony and relatively slippery, especially on the final descent, but it is well worth the effort: the Lispach bog lake is magnificent!

The aim is to visit the six sites of the Metz Christmas market (ranked 9th in the 2017 competition for the best Christmas markets in Europe) but also to visit a few neighbourhoods of this beautiful city with such a rich history, from Roman times to the present day, including the ‘German’ periods between 1870 and 1918 and between 1940 and 1944.

This historical walk (First World War) winds its way from one battlefield to another. The route runs between two strategic points: Le Xon, occupied by the French on French territory, and Le Froidmont, on German territory following Germany's annexation of Alsace and Moselle in 1870.

This is a short, half-day hike without any major difficulties, which takes us back to the difficult past of the mountain dwellers of yesteryear who lived in the village of Faudon, now in ruins, overlooked by the medieval fort of Saint-Philippe.

A circular loop to discover one of the megaliths recorded in Franche-Comté. Expect a steep climb from the start to point 1 and then between points 2 and 3.

A beautiful hike that begins with a steep climb to the ruins of Wildenstein Castle. Continue through the forest via the Abri du Tal and the top of the Bockloch waterfall to reach the village of Wildenstein. Return along the Thur and the western shore of the lake.

A walk through meadows and forests. The route passes by the ruins of Les Rangs du Bois and Le Couvent, then through the hamlet of Béviau to reach Château Grenouille. Pretty ponds dot the route.

A short hike full of surprises in a forest environment among sandstone rocks. A viewpoint equipped with a promontory offering a beautiful view of the Moselle valley.The circular route can be done in either direction, but the suggested direction allows you to better appreciate the elevation gain.There are markings (yellow diamonds) but they are not always easy to spot.

This walk passes close to the headwaters of the Raddon de Saint-Bresson (see Practical Information). The route takes you through forests, grassy plateaus and valleys in the Saône Vosges, as well as a short stretch along quiet roads.

A bucolic hike through the pretty village of Girmont-Val-d'Ajol. There are numerous ponds (often private) and paths, many of which are shaded. A few kilometres on quiet roads.

Starting from the Banney animal park, where you can admire wild boar and deer, and close to the Luxeuil-les-Bains spa centre, you will walk through woods to admire Gallo-Roman remains such as the pretty Vosges sandstone fountains. You can refresh yourself, rest or have a picnic on the wooden and stone tables provided.

In a little-known part of the Vosges mountains, you can take in views of the Bouchot valley over a relatively short distance, thanks to the three viewing points, two of which are fully secured. The paths are shaded and well maintained by the Club Vosgien.
