From the RN94 between Savines-le-Lac and Embrun, drive up the RD568 towards the Abbaye de Boscodon. Pass the abbey and leave the car park on your left, then drive to the Fontaine de l'Ours car park (the road is passable by road vehicle but caution is advised).
(S/E) From the car park, drive back down the road for about 200 metres (no more) and take the path that climbs into the forest on the right (you can also climb via the Charance path, a little higher up on the left).
(1) I prefer to go up at this point because it takes you closer to the Cirque de Bragousse. In fact, 1,300 metres further on, you reach the first viewpoint of the cirque.
(2) Continue climbing under the trees, where you will have another opportunity to admire the cirque. It is a rocky, truly lunar landscape.
(3) Once past the cirque, you can take a short detour to the left to head towards the Pic de Charance (Parpaillon massif). Personally, I stopped before the scree slope because the passage to the peak seemed dangerous to me.
That day, I made an unexpected discovery. I had climbed Pic du Morgon many times without ever noticing the rock called "Tête de la Vieille" (Old Woman's Head) at an altitude of 2,381 metres, but there, to my surprise, if you look closely towards Pic du Morgon, two rocks come together to reveal a head... Yes, that's it, the Tête de la Vieille.
Return to the path and turn left towards the Morgon cirque, which you will reach 600 metres further on.
(4) Arrival at the cirque. How beautiful the greenery is at an altitude of 2,000 metres.
(5) Descend to the left into the cirque, skirting Lake Saint-Pierre and passing close to the chapel of the same name (rebuilt identically in 1992), then tackle the final ascent via the path that climbs to the left of the Pic du Morgon. This path is not very well marked on the ground but is nevertheless visible from a distance.
(6) Be careful, as the path crosses rocky ridges where you need to be very cautious and use your hands (this section is not recommended for people who are prone to vertigo). Nevertheless, take a moment to look around and enjoy the magnificent view between the mountains and the lake.
Shortly after passing some Edelweiss, you will reach the peak of Morgon, which offers a beautiful view of Lake Serre-Ponçon.
(7) You can return by the same route, but you would miss the sheepfold below at an altitude of 1,896 metres with its wooden fountain (dry when I passed by) and the marmots a little further to the left.
(8) From there, you will find our uphill trail at the bottom of the valley on the right.
(5) Return in the opposite direction.
(9) A small detour will take us along the "Chemin de Charance" on the descent to the left after the hairpin bends, then we will reach the car park (S/E).
I think that, like my wife and I, you'll be "legs full" as they say when your muscles are tired, but what memories...
