Château Grenouille near Béviau, seen from Les Jeannery

A walk through meadows and forests. The route passes by the ruins of Les Rangs du Bois and Le Couvent, then through the hamlet of Béviau to reach Château Grenouille. Pretty ponds dot the route.

Description of the walk

Leaving the village of Saint-Bresson, follow the Route des Forts and park 2 km further on, at the side of the D136, near the Les Jeannery sign.

(S/E) Take the small village road and, after the house with blue shutters, turn left towards the chapel.

(1) Continue along this path and go round the last house to take the path leading up into the forest. When you reach the first path, turn left until you reach the next junction.

(2) Take the hairpin bend to the right and follow this ascending path. Pass the ruins of Les Rangs du Bois on your right and continue straight on. Once you reach the plateau, turn right until the path makes a right-angle turn to the left.

(3) At this point, take the path on the right, which is not very well marked. Follow the edge of the meadow, then head down into the forest to the ruins of the Convent.

(4) Go round the ruins on the left and continue along the path which leads to the edge of a pond. Take the path on the left and follow it along the edge of the meadow to Béviau (where there is a wash house). This is private property, so please respect the site.

(5) The junction for the circular route to Château Grenouille is just after Béviau. Carry on straight ahead and, at the three-way junction, turn left. You will reach the Étang de Frai. You can get closer to it by going round the fenced-off property. Continue along the path and turn right a few hundred metres further on, until you reach Château Grenouille and its private pond.

(6) Walk between the pond and the house and continue until you reach a road.

(7) Turn right and walk along the road until you reach the start of a path on the right.

(8) Take this three-way junction; at the fork ahead, turn right, pass a stone cross and reach the junction of the Béviau circular loop.
At the house, turn right to reach a wide stony track.

(9) Turn right onto the plateau and head downhill to join the D 136.

(10) Head down to the left and follow the road carefully to the car park (S/E).

A lovely, varied route with stunning views of the peaks of the Southern Vosges.
The route is away from traffic and very quiet. The descent to the start/finish point on the Route des Forts posed no problems for us (no vehicles); it might be different at the weekend or in the height of summer...

A lovely walk. It’s a shame there’s no information about the ruins at Les Rangs du Bois and the convent. If anyone could give me some details, that would be great

Hello S BOEHRER, thank you for this first piece of feedback from the field; I’m glad you enjoyed my hike.
I’m surprised, however, that you say this walk is very busy, as we hardly ever meet anyone.
All the best with Visorando.
