Description of the walk

Coming from Pontis by car, follow the D7 for about 2,500 metres and take the path on the left at the stone hut, at the Col de Pontis. Follow this path to the end (do not go past the Hugues farm, but take the path on the left just before it), towards Morgonnet.
Park your car in the small dirt car park before the sign prohibiting vehicles.

(S/E) The hike begins by taking the path that climbs to the left of the car park through black marl (yellow markings not very visible) and then through pine trees. The path turns right in a hairpin bend along the ridge and offers beautiful views of the lake. After a little effort, you will quickly reach a meadow and then the Cabane du Jas (1615m).

(1) After a short photo break, continue along the path through the forest to the Col du Morgonnet (picnic area with tables).

(2) Take the path on the right, which climbs quite steeply to Morgonnet. From the summit, continue along the ridge to complete a loop and return to the path you took on the way up.

(3). You can descend towards Pontis using the path on the left before the pass. See my description at https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-col-...).
You will see a majestic rock in front of you, called the Grand Morgon (2,324 m).

The return journey follows the main path (GR® de Pays - Tour du Lac de Serre-Ponçon) to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,459 m - Start - several viewpoints on the - Lac de Serre-Ponçon
  2. 1 : km 0.81 - alt. 1,599 m - Jas hut
  3. 2 : km 1.99 - alt. 1,744 m - Magnificent view - Le Morgonnet
  4. 3 : km 2.45 - alt. 1,616 m - Col du Morgonnet
  5. S/E : km 4.52 - alt. 1,462 m - Starting point car park

Notes

The departmental road No. 7 to Hugues is passable by car, but you must be very careful in some places as you risk hitting or even skidding with your vehicle. I passed by again in September 2020 and the road was even more damaged.
There is no water source along this route.

If you don't feel up to it, climb to the Col du Morgonnet via the main trail (GRP® - Tour du Lac de Serre-Ponçon) which starts from the car park, following the description in reverse.

Please note that the start of the hike is very steep and the ground can be slippery if it rains. In addition, the summit of Morgonnet can be dangerous for children

Worth a visit

On the way back, a sign on the left will indicate "Le Lauzet". This is the village of Lauzet-Ubaye.
You can enhance and extend this hike by taking this path to the hamlet of "Le Villard", now in ruins, and its strange stone dolmen. Please note that there is a 200-metre climb, which you will of course have to make on the way back.

TheGRP® - Tour du lac de Serre-Ponçon is a long hike. It takes about ten days to complete the loop. The local FFRP can help you with your plans if you wish.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The last 300-metre climb is a bit challenging, but what a magnificent 360-degree view when you reach the top.
All in all, it's a very beautiful, shaded hike, and in July/August you can enjoy wild raspberries along the way.

Very beautiful hike to Morgonnet

Please note: a suitable vehicle is required to access the last 2 km of the trail

This hike is classified as 'moderate'. And I agree with several reviews: before starting the hike, the last 2 km by car are complicated, so either you struggle in the car because the road is parish specific to Brittany or you add 4 km to the hike.
But it's such a beautiful hike. You have to do it!
I did it with two dogs weighing 10 and 20 kg who are used to walking, so it's doable, but if you're not used to it, the elevation gain is too much for it to be classified as easy.

Magnificent balcony hike above Serre Ponçon and below Morgon.
The yellow markings have been redone, but the start of the trail could be better signposted. On Sunday 3 November, almost all hikers got lost in the black marl.

Nice hike with beautiful views of Lake Serre-Ponçon. Given the comments about the trail, we decided to park at the Pontis Pass. This adds 4 km to the route (2 km there and 2 km back). The section through the marl is indeed very short and not impressive. There are a few steep climbs, but you are rewarded with the views. The yellow markings have been repainted. Thank you for this route.

Beautiful landscapes and a superb view from the summit, but difficulty finding the trail at the start among the scree. We started a little too high, but quickly found the right trail and had no problems after that.

A beautiful hike, short and with magnificent views of Lake Serre Ponçon.
Almost as beautiful as its big brother (Le Morgon)

Be very careful because after starting this hike in the marl, there is a hairpin bend with a sign for the Col du Morgonnet and the Cabane du Jas. However, this is located a little further ahead of the bend. There is a rock at the fork and the yellow mark is behind it, so it is not visible from the path going uphill. Otherwise, it is a very beautiful walk with breathtaking views of the Lac de Serre Poinçon, which can be seen almost in its entirety if you go as far as the Pic du Morgonnet.

To reach the departure car park, additional information would be welcome: name the road on the left LE MORGONNET, as indicated on a small white sign on the ground before the Hugues farm, which is not named.
From there, this road is still at least 4 km long, so allow plenty of time to drive it carefully. We did it in a 207SW.
Otherwise, yes, the start in the black marl may discourage you from setting off, but with good footwear and if you are able to walk on a slope, it only lasts for less than 100 m, after which it is an easy climb up the mountain, and what a treat for the eyes at several points along the way, plus a pleasant stop at the Cabane.

Hike on 24 August 2018
The route was very good, with just one point to note.
The start of the route indicated to turn left up a reasonable incline, then take a sharp right. However, we couldn't find the left-hand path and went straight up, which was quite difficult. The rest of the route was very good.

In addition, we climbed to the summit of Morgonnet (very beautiful view) and to the shell, which was more impressive than difficult.
No problems with the Honda Civic
