Coming from Pontis by car, follow the D7 for about 2,500 metres and take the path on the left at the stone hut, at the Col de Pontis. Follow this stony path to the end (do not go past the Hugues farm but take the path on the left just before it), heading towards the Morgonnet.
Park your car in the small dirt car park before the sign prohibiting vehicles from passing.
(S/E) The walk begins by taking the path which, from the car park, climbs to the left of the car park through the black marl (yellow markings not very visible) and then through the pine trees. The path takes a sharp right-hand bend along the ridge and offers beautiful views of the lake. After a short, strenuous climb, you’ll soon reach a meadow and then the Cabane du Jas (1,615 m).
(1) After a short photo break, continue along the path through the forest to the Col du Morgonnet (picnic area with tables).
(2) Take the path on the right, which climbs quite steeply up to the Morgonnet. From the summit, continue along the ridge to complete a circular route and rejoin the path you took on the way up.
(3) If you wish, you can head down towards Pontis using the path on the left before the pass. See my description at https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-col-...).
In front of you lies a majestic rock, known as the Grand Morgon.
The return journey follows the main path (GR®® de Pays – Tour du Lac de Serre-Ponçon) back to the car park (S/E).
