Park in the church square (Grande Rue).
(S/E) Turn right onto Rue de l’Étang (this is not the first street leading down to the lake but the second) and, at the end, turn left. Follow this stony path for about 1,100 metres (you’ll pass the brand-new bird observatory built in 2015).
(2) Walk along the lake until you reach a crossroads of paths.
(3) Leave theGR®® here and turn right onto a newly marked path which, through the fields, will take you to the south of the Étang de Chaudotte. However, you won’t be able to see the lake itself due to very dense shrubbery, which protects the wildlife. Continue along the line of the hedge until you reach the stony path, which you’ll take to the left until you reach the edge of a wood.
(4) Go through the gate (theGRP®® de la Woëvre mentioned above leads off to the left) and follow the perfectly straight path to the crossroads.
(5) Turn right to reach the Grandes Parois pond. The end of the path is blocked by a huge three-metre-high metal gate which spoils the landscape; therefore, 100 metres before this gate, at the pond, turn left through the forest to see the pond. Return to the previous crossroads and rejoin the path on the right. You’ll soon reach another crossroads.
(6) A short detour to your left will take you to the pretty little Minuit pond. Return to the junction and continue left along the forest track for 1,200 metres until you reach a junction with four perpendicular paths.
(7) Turn left, cross the Viéville Forest Road and you’ll reach the Tranchée Forestière du Séjour.
(8) Turn left onto it and follow it straight on until you reach a path junction.
(9) Turn right, reaching the Étang Picard and the far end of the large pond. Pass the two dykes.
(10) Turn left and go through the gate on the left if it is closed. Follow the path between the meadows and the wild hedge until you reach the D13, where you’ll set off on a long straight stretch of nearly 1,600 metres along a path running alongside the road (this is the least pleasant part of the route). Feel free to stop briefly at the car park and take the path on the left to the bird observatory.
(11) Continue along the edge of the pond until you reach a metal gate.
(12) Go through this gate: don’t worry, even though you’re entering the private grounds of the Vieux Moulin estate, you’re allowed to pass through here. Go to the right of the restaurant and head for the church car park (S/E).
