La Saône walks
A half-nature, half-city walk starting from Lyon Saint-Irénée
Route to be followed using GPS, semi-urban route, not practical with explanations.
Starting from the Fort de Lyon Saint-Just, 500 metres from the Saint Just funicular, this is a half-nature, half-city walk. It passes through several parks and the pretty little Razes valley, followed by a nature trail along the Thiện Minh Pagoda. There is a beautiful view of Lyon and the Alps from the Esplanade Lichfield in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon.
Walk along the banks of the Saône around Rupt-sur-Saône
Rupt-sur-Saône is a small picturesque village in the Saône valley, at the foot of three hills, close to a salt road and a Roman road
The nearby forest is home to the ghosts of the medieval loves of the Crusader Jean de Rupt, while the Saône offers the pleasures of fishing and boat trips.
Heuilley-sur-Saône, the Saône banks and its junction with the Marne river
This route will take you along the banks of the Saône and to the mouth of the Marne-Saône canal.Take time to look at the lock-keeper's houses and the locks. Maybe you'll see swans, herons and cranes. Beautiful views of cattle farms and meadows.Just before you return to the starting point, you'll pass over the Pont de Garde, close to the two dams on the Saône and the last lock on the route.
Circular between Caluire and the Mont-d'Or communes
Hike to discover the balmes (caves) of the Saône, cross the valleys and hills of the rich properties of the Mont-d'Or communes and return via Ile Barbe before climbing back up to the Jean Moulin Museum.
Circular around Couzon-au-Mont-d'Or
This circular starting from Couzon-au-Mont-d'Or will take you to the remains of the Monts d'Or Aqueduct, a charming little wash house and a few other ruins. The first and last thirds of the route follow marked trails, while the central part follows small unmarked paths.
From Place Bellecour to Parc de la Tête d'Or in Lyon
This route allows you to walk along the banks of the Saône on the way there and the Rhône on the way back.
Along the way, we will enjoy the sights of the peninsula (the writers' wall, the Lyonnais wall, Place des Terreaux, the town hall, the opera house).
Halfway through, we will walk around the Parc de la Tête d'Or.
The most beautiful views of Lyon from Fourvière and Croix-Rousse
Starting from the Basilica of Fourvière (or Place Bellecour), the route allows you to enjoy the most beautiful views of the city.
You will pass by many of Lyon's must-see churches, monuments and theatres. You will climb up to Croix-Rousse through almost all of the traboules (covered passageways) on the hill. A truly peaceful route with virtually no cars.

This urban yet bucolic walk allows you to discover the wild banks of the Rhône, the new Passerelle de la Paix footbridge, the Croix-Rousse tunnel in a gentle way, the newly developed banks of the Saône and the market garden plateau that supplies the city.
The starting point is indicative. The walk can begin and end at virtually any point along the route.

A flat route, suitable for all, often used for Sunday walks. Due to the passages over the railway line, pushchairs are not recommended. For geocaching enthusiasts, I have marked the caches located along the route.

Walk on the hills above Lamarche-sur-Saône
After completing the circuit of the Étang du Milieu, this walk takes you up to the heights of Lamarche-sur-Saône, skirting the Pays Neuf. We’ll take the Voie Verte before walking through the woods known as the Grandes Charrières, then through the Leat aux Renards. We’ll return to the starting point by crossing the Pays Neuf.
Circular Chamblanc, via Pagny-la-Ville, the banks of the Saône and the plain
Fellow walkers, this walk starting from the village of Chamblanc will take you through the villages of Lechâtelet and then Pagny-la-Ville along the banks of the Saône. The return route follows the flatlands back to Chamblanc. Avoid this walk in hot weather as there is little shade along the route.

This is an educational trail. Jack la Panouille spent many years of his childhood in Allériot. He still cherishes the memory of a young girl from Bey with whom he is still secretly in love. With Max’s help, Jack decides to pluck up his courage and go and declare his love to the beautiful Adélaïde. Puzzles are dotted along the route to help the two friends reach their goal.
Panouille in a bit of a pickle in Verdun-sur-le-Doubs
This is an educational trail. Jack la Panouille and Max Decoop would love to spend a few days in the sun on the banks of the Saône. Without a moment’s hesitation, Max decides to take his friend to Verdun-Ciel, his home town. He’s already imagining the delights of the days ahead: a boat trip, a picnic and pike fishing.But, no sooner have they arrived in Verdun than everything goes awry. Max hasn’t even had time to cast a single line into the Saône before the whole trip goes down the drain: Jack has vanished! Panicked, he’s already imagining the worst. What if Jack la Panouille is in a right fix?! Immediately, Max sets off in search of his friend.Little does he know that he’s embarking on a long chase that will take him all over Verdun. Circular route between the Rondbois communal forest and the Saône
This walk invites you to discover the local heritage: the Saugy wash house, once the heart of the hamlet; the Saône sluice gate, which regulates the river’s level; and the Caillet wash house, nestled in lush greenery. A stroll through nature and the village’s history.
Charnay-lès-Chalon Pâquiers Circular Route
This walk invites you to discover Saint-Grégoire Church, recognisable by its imperial-style bell tower, as well as the large-scale lock at Écuelles, a major structure for navigation on the Saône. The route also crosses the meadows of the Val de Saône, a refuge for the Eurasian curlew.
Between fields and rivers from Mont-lès-Seurre
The “Entre pièces et rivières” trail invites walkers to discover Saint-Martin Church, notable for its half-timbered walls, and Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand Church, easily recognisable by its Franche-Comté-style bell tower with glazed tiles. Along the route lies the hamlet of Chazelle, where horses and cattle graze peacefully in the meadows in summer.
At the confluence of the Saône and the Doubs from Saunières
This walk along the Doubs takes you to the site where the remains of a 17th-century boat mill were discovered, a unique testament to the ingenuity of millers of yesteryear. The route also passes close to Île du Château, a preserved sensitive natural area rich in wildlife and birds.
Grand Pâquier Trail
The Grand Pâquier Trail links the village of Damerey on the banks of the Saône, crossing a wet meadow classified as a Natura 2000 site. Along this themed trail, you’ll meet Élizabeth the Egret, the mascot, who playfully guides you as you discover the elements that make up the landscape and its diverse forms of life. Puzzles are provided at each totem.
A lovely tour of Lyon and its hills, taking in both of its hills
This day-long itinerary, featuring an optional but almost obligatory lunch break in a good Lyon restaurant, allows you to explore Lyon from below but, above all, from above, via its two hills, Fourvière and La Croix Rousse. A circular route of 17.8 km or less (15 km) if starting from Saint-Georges. Numerous tourist attractions and notable sites in Lyon line this route, offering a feast for the eyes!
Circular between Magny-Montarlot and Poncey-lès-Athée
Hike through the Bois des Ratières and Bois des Cognés woods where, depending on the season, you will discover these woods and their colours. Pass through Poncey-lés-Athée (unusual chapel) and walk along the banks of the Saône (dam). Return through the meadows.
