Discovering Lyon: from Tête d'Or to Fourvière

The walk starts from the pier in Tête d'Or Park.

(S/E) Turn right at the pier and take the path that runs alongside the lake (on your left). At the mini golf crossroads, turn left towards the velodrome, which you will see in front of you. Cross the bridge and, at the exit, turn right onto the path that follows a small train track. Cross the wooden bridge again and turn right. Head up towards Cité Internationale to reach the greenway.

(1) Turn left onto the greenway: you can take the dirt path on the right or continue on the main road. Continue along the quays (passing under seven bridges) until you reach the volleyball court.

(2) Go up to take the Pont Gallieni bridge on the right. Continue straight ahead to Place Carnot (along the tram line). Turn right and cross the square towards its centre. Take Rue Victor Hugo opposite (the street begins between two brasseries). Continue straight ahead, ignoring the streets on either side, until you reach Place Bellecour (a large clay square with a statue of Louis XIV in the centre).

(3) At the statue, turn left diagonally to reach the corner of the square (pharmacy). Turn left onto Rue du Colonel Chambonnet towards Old Lyon and cross the Saône via Pont Bonaparte. Cut across the quays and continue straight ahead, taking the left lane of Avenue Adolphe Max.

(4) At the metro station in front of you, turn left and then take the right-hand lane. Turn right onto Rue Bellièvre and then right again onto Rue Ferrachat.

(5) Turn into the first street on the left until you reach Montée du Gourguillon (Guignol theatre). At the top of Montée du Gourguillon, take the stairs before the hairpin bend on the right. Turn right onto Rue des Farges, go up immediately on the left to cross the park and turn right until you reach the Roman theatres.

(6) Turn left in front of the first theatre and cross it via the stairs just opposite the entrance. Walk along a tree-lined path and, at the end, turn left and go up Allée Lucius Munatius Plancus on the left.
Exit the theatre, turn right in front of a hotel and arrive at Rue Roger Radisson. Take Rue Pauline Marie Jaricot opposite to the end.

(7) Before the left turn, turn right towards Parc Acroarbre/Piste de la Sarra. Walk along Stade de la Sarra and continue straight towards the Basilica of Fourvière; at the end of the path, turn right towards the Basilica of Fourvière. When you reach Montée Nicolas de Lange, turn right to reach the basilica.

(8) Walk along the left-hand side and descend via the Rosary Garden (stairs to the right of the panorama). At the garden exit, turn left onto Montée Saint-Barthélémy and descend to the right via the stairs between the iron barriers (don't be alarmed by the size of the stairs). At the bottom of the stairs, catch your breath and turn left until you reach the large traboule.

(9) There is a plaque on the door indicating the traboule. Cross the traboule and turn left onto Rue Saint-Jean (a pedestrian street with several small shops and bouchons). At the end, turn left and then immediately right onto Rue Lainerie. Turn left onto Rue François Vernay and continue to Gare Saint-Paul.

(10) Turn right onto Quai de Bondy and follow it to the left.

(11) Turn right onto the Saint-Vincent footbridge, cross Quai Saint-Vincent and follow the small street opposite. Turn right onto Rue de la Martinière (you will pass the billiards academy and the Lycée la Martinière) until you reach a small alley on the left between the kebab restaurants.

(12) Turn left and go up the stairs, continuing to the left. At Rue des Capucins, turn right to the end, then turn left towards Place Croix Paquet.

(13) Turn right and cross the park. At the children's playground, leave the park and turn left onto Rue Alsace Lorraine. 20 metres further on, turn right and then left into the passage under the road. Turn left and follow Cours Herbouville, which runs alongside the Rhône, to Pont Winston Churchill.

(14) Turn right, cross the bridge and continue straight ahead towards the entrance to Parc de la Tête d'Or. Return to the pier opposite the entrance (S/E).

Rue Victor Hugo: pedestrian street, shopping area.

Place Bellecour: access to Rue de la République, pedestrian street, shopping area.

Vieux Lyon: Fourvière Basilica, Saint-Jean Cathedral (to the right of (4)), pedestrian street, Gadagne Museum, Museum of Miniatures and Cinema, Petit Musée Guignol, Guignol Theatre, ice cream parlour.
