Description of the walk

The starting point is in the Halle Sausey car park, which is well signposted and free to use, with plenty of spaces.

(S/E) At the far end of the car park, turn left at the market hall to reach the small park that leads to the Pont de Pierre bridge. On the other side of the river, turn right twice to pass under the bridge, walking alongside the lock, and follow the banks of the Saône to the other bridge.

(1) Turn right to reach the roundabout, then turn left to cross the Pont Neuf bridge. At the roundabout on the other side of the bridge, go down to the left to reach the tarmac towpath. Turn left again and follow it towards Gray-la-Ville.

(2) At Essertey, keep to the right to continue along the Saône for about 2.5 km.

(3) Take the first white path on the left, near the boat stop and picnic area. Continue for about 1,500 metres, then turn right towards the Étang de la Rodelle lake.

(4) Continue straight ahead for about 100 metres, then take the white path on the right. Walk for about 400 metres, negotiate the left-hand bend, then turn right onto the white path. Much further on, turn left at the T-junction and you will come out onto the Grande Rue in Velet.

(5) Follow it to the right until you reach the town hall, then turn left onto Rue des Vignes (bakery) and continue slightly uphill. Turn left again at the junction with Rue Marquet and take the right-hand bend.

(6) At the end of the bend, take a path on the left and, at the end, turn immediately right onto another path that runs alongside the houses to reach Gray-la-Ville. You will come to Rue des Bergeries in Grandes Vignes.

(7) Turn right, then turn right again at the end of the bend to cross part of the housing estate. Turn right onto the road towards the D105 and arrive at a roundabout.

(8) Turn left towards Gray and join the D475 (Avenue de la Libération). Cross at the pedestrian crossing slightly to the right, then turn left to follow the road. At the first junction, turn slightly right to enter the small Tilleuls park, walk around it and join the large roundabout at Place de la République.

(9) Use the pedestrian crossings to go around it on the right, take Rue Moïse Lévy on the right to walk alongside the nursery school and then Parc de la Maison pour Tous, which has Atlas cedars inside. At the corner of the park, turn left into Rue des Champs to reach Rue du Commandant Cécile, opposite the vocational school.

(10) Turn right and cross Rue des Casernes to continue almost opposite, on Rue du Réservoir. In front of the Palais de Justice, turn left and arrive at the town hall: remarkable roof.

(11) Turn left then right onto Rue de l'Église. Stop to visit the Notre-Dame Basilica if you wish. Continue the route to the right via Rue Edmond Pigalle, then climb the stairs on the left to head towards the Baron Martin Museum: there is a lovely view of the town and its surroundings from the museum park. Go down the stairs on the left (be careful, they can be slippery) to Rue Vanoise.

(12) Turn left and then take the second street on the right (Rue Thiers) to go down towards the Saône.

(13) Go around the roundabout on the right, cross at the pedestrian crossing, continue straight ahead on Rue Sauzay and turn left to reach the car park (S/E).

I marked 'no' for visiting the route because, given the flooding in the previous days, we were unable to complete the route as planned.
Once we left the banks of the Saône and had to cut across the fields, they were flooded, so we had to turn back.
Otherwise, there was nothing special to see apart from the old town of Gray.
