Description of the walk

The start of this hiking trail is on the church square, next to the village hall. There is ample, easily accessible parking.

(S/E) When facing the start sign, head straight on past the playground, then at the end of this path, at the roundabout, continue straight on and cross the chicane. After 130 metres, at the end of Impasse des Vignes, turn right onto a path for 430 metres. At the end, take the road on the right for 70 metres, then the road on the left. Do not cross the main road. Continue straight on along Rue des Tientres for 1 km.

(1) Take the track on the left, then follow the edge of the woods for 900 metres. At the end of the track, you’ll come to a road. Take it to the right for 750 metres until you reach the Croix Rambaud. On the way, you’ll pass the Moulin de Montagny.

(2) Take the grassy path on the left behind the cross. This path quickly turns into a forest track. Continue straight on for 1.2 km. When you reach the road again, follow it to the right for 270 metres.

(3) Take the forest track on the left at Rondbois. Go through the gate, then continue straight on along this forest track for 650 metres. At the end, the path naturally veers to the left. After 150 metres, you’ll reach the hundred-year-old oak tree.

(4) Continue straight on for 250 metres. Leave the woods and turn left to stay on the edge of the forest. You’ll come back to the road.

(5) Turn right to cross a small bridge. Then, less than 50 metres on, take the grassy path on the right. The ditch is culverted, making it easy to cross. Follow the path uphill and walk alongside the fences for 650 metres to reach a stony path. At this point, turn right to reach the Caillet wash house.

(6) Walk along the pond on the left for 250 metres, then the path naturally turns left. Follow it for 250 metres to rejoin the road.

(7) Turn right onto it for 100 metres, then take thefirst street on the left, Rue de l’Ancien Moulin. At the end, head up Rue de la Saugerie to the left for 400 metres until you reach the junction.

(8) Take the street on the right and continue straight ahead. Cross the D673 using the pedestrian crossing opposite the church. Continue straight ahead for 250 metres and turn right. Walk up Rue des Frégaux and then Rue de la Pelletière. At the junction, before the D673, turn left into Rue de la Pommerée. Continue for 300 metres.

(9) Take the stony path on the left for 500 metres. At the junction of the two grassy paths, take the one on the left. After 300 metres, you will reach Rue des Bouts des Curtils. Walk up this street and, at the junction, take Rue de Goullien on the right.

(10) At the football stadium, stay on the road heading right until you reach the Saône embankment.

(11) Then follow it to the left for 650 metres.

(12) At the junction, take the grassy path on the left which leads back to the football stadium you passed earlier.

(10) Then head up Rue de Goullien to the right. At the next junction, take Rue Devant Goullien to the right, then Rue de la Baleine to the left, then turn right onto Grande Rue de Bey and finally turn right onto Rue des Porchers until you reach the Saugy wash house.

(13) Retrace your steps and continue straight on for 400 metres. Take Rue de la Motte on the left, then turn right onto Rue de la Frebe to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

A true testament to the past, the Caillet wash house, also known as the ‘upper’ wash house or the ‘hotel des bavardes’, is set in unspoilt green surroundings. This serene site was once the beating heart of local social life, where washerwomen would gather until the early 1960s. Its recent restoration has restored it to its former glory, allowing it to continue telling its story to walkers.

The Saône sluice gate, a vital structure for controlling the river’s flow. It stabilises the water level to ensure a constant depth for navigation, whilst regulating the flow to protect the surrounding plains during floods.

The Saugy wash house, also known as the ‘lower’ wash house or the ‘gossips’ wash house, is built from local stone and features a traditional long-pitched roof. This neighbourhood wash house allowed the hamlet’s residents to wash their clothes nearby without having to go to the village centre.
