Park in the car park near the Chez Bibet restaurant in Saint-Bernard. This route is signposted with hiking posts; yellow paint markings will be installed soon (2023).
(S/E) Head up to the right towards the medieval church.
(1) The church features a beautiful flamboyant Gothic-style portal. Turn left then right, heading towards the town hall via Rue de la Saône. At the town hall, head towards the shops (bakery and mini-market) and turn right onto Avenue Suzanne Valadon. Continue right until the first junction.
(2) Cross the main road with care and take Chemin du Bourguignon, near the fortified castle, which in the 1930s was owned by the painter Maurice Utrillo and his mother Suzanne Valadon. Walk along its garden. Continue straight ahead onto Chemin de la Garenne, then take Chemin des Cerves on the left once you reach the end.
(3) Cross the main road again, follow it to the right for about 50 metres, then take the first street on the left, Chemin du Bois de Lys, towards Les Grandes Bruyères and Saint-Didier-de-Formans. Ignore the first junction, pass the houses on Chemin du Bois de Lys and continue to the RD88a (Avenue des Helvètes).
(4) Cross the D88A at Les Grandes Bruyères, head straight ahead, then turn left onto Chemin des Bois, towards Pré de l’Eau and Saint-Bernard.
(5) At the first junction, turn right. Keep heading in the same direction towards the Saône and pass the former priory of La Bruyère.
(6) It is listed as a Historic Monument. Once at Pré de l’Eau (towpath), turn left and head back towards the village centre along the banks of the Saône, passing a lône (a backwater of the river).
(7) Information boards have been installed. Continue for a further 200 m or so and ignore a path on the left. Carry on until the bridge comes into view.
(8) Turn left onto Rue de la Saône with its gate, pass the restaurant Chez Bibet again to return to the car park (S/E).
