Panouille in a bit of a pickle in Verdun-sur-le-Doubs

This is an educational trail. Jack la Panouille and Max Decoop would love to spend a few days in the sun on the banks of the Saône. Without a moment’s hesitation, Max decides to take his friend to Verdun-Ciel, his home town. He’s already imagining the delights of the days ahead: a boat trip, a picnic and pike fishing.
But, no sooner have they arrived in Verdun than everything goes awry. Max hasn’t even had time to cast a single line into the Saône before the whole trip goes down the drain: Jack has vanished! Panicked, he’s already imagining the worst. What if Jack la Panouille is in a right fix?! Immediately, Max sets off in search of his friend.
Little does he know that he’s embarking on a long chase that will take him all over Verdun. He’ll have to ask for help from lots of characters who won’t hesitate to put him to the test to find Jack.
Using the booklet available from the tourist office, complete the challenges to help Max find Jack.

Description of the walk

The start of this hiking trail is on Place Charvot, opposite the port of Verdun-Ciel.

(S/E) Head left to cross Place de la Liberté.

(1) Use the pedestrian crossing to cross Rue de la Liberté, then walk alongside the Petit Doubs. When the Petit Doubs flows into the Saône, continue along the path beside the fence. After 250 metres, go through the gate to enter the field. At certain times of the year, there are cows in this field. Avoid any sudden movements. If the cows approach, speak to them to reassure them. Walk along the fence for 350 metres, then look for some steps on your left. Take them to reach the second stage towards Le Boiret.

(2) Continue to the left.

(3) Turn right into Rue du Petit Chauvort and continue straight on. Cross the RD970 to reach a stony path that passes under the railway line and leads to La Barre.

(4) Take the path branching off to the left and follow the railway line for 600 metres to La Bouthière.

(5) Cross the road and continue straight on along the grassy path, below the railway line, for 600 metres to reach Le Grand Tartre.

(6) Cross the road and continue straight on along the stony path for 700 metres to Les Sablons.

(7) Take the road on the left under the railway bridge, walk past the football stadium and you will arrive opposite Rue du 27 Janvier 1978.

(8) At the junction, use the pedestrian crossing to cross Avenue Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. Once you are in the Gamm Vert car park, walk past the sign on the left. Continue straight on to climb up onto the sea wall.

(9) Once on the embankment, turn left towards the Pont des Bordes.

(10) Cross the road, go round the back of the village hall (cubic building) and take Rue du Bac on the right, then the street behind the church to return to Place Charvot (S/E).
