This walk starts at the Minimes funicular station. To get there, head to Place Bellecour, either by car (parking available near Place Bellecour) or by public transport (metro lines A or D, or bus).
(S) From Place Bellecour, head towards the Saône. Turn left onto Quai Tilsitt, following the Saône, and take the Paul Couturier footbridge on the right. Continue straight up the hill and turn left onto La Montée des Épies. Then, turn left onto La Montée du Gourguillon. Continue straight on along Rue des Farges and, at the traffic lights, turn left into Place de l’Abbé Larue. Walk down to the bottom of the square and enter the Jardin des Curiosités. Enjoy the magnificent view of Lyon.
(1) Leave the garden by walking back up Place de l'Abbé Larue. Opposite, next to the traffic lights, take the steps and Montée du Télégraphe. After passing the École Albert Camus, turn right through a small gate (open) leading into the Parc de la Visitation. Walk around the hotel and continue along the path leading to the Roman Theatres.
(2) Head right to the highest point of the small theatre, then descend to the lowest point. Next, walk past the bottom of the large theatre, cross the gardens to your right and opposite the theatre, then turn left and right again. Take Rue de l'Antiquaille on the left, then continue downhill, taking Montée-Saint-Barthélémy on the right. Turn right into the Jardin du Rosaire and follow the path. Do not take the first two paths branching off to the left; stay on the main path. Further on, take the staircase on the left leading up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.
(3) Enter through the gate at number 42, go up and turn left in front of the Maison de Pauline Jarricot. Go round this area and exit at the far end of the grounds. Take the path leading up to the Abbaye de Fourvière.
(4) Cross the park alongside the basilica and turn right onto Montée Nicolas de Lange. Go round the metal tower (mini Eiffel Tower), then go down the steps of Montée Nicolas de Lange. At the bottom of the steps, turn left onto Chemin de Montauban
(5) Take the path leading down to the right, just before 20 Rue de Montauban. At the bottom of the passage, follow Quai de Pierre Scize to the right. Turn left onto the Passerelle de l’Homme de la Roche, which crosses the Saône. At the end of the footbridge, turn right and head down to the Saône quays. Walk along the quay and turn back just before the next footbridge (Passerelle Saint-Vincent). Cross over opposite the footbridge and look at the rear of the building on your left to see the trompe-l’œil mural ‘La Fresque des Lyonnais’. Continue straight ahead and turn right onto Rue Sergent Blandan. Turn left and cross Place Santonay. Continue straight up the steps to the Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules.
(6) To the right of the amphitheatre, take the steps leading up Rue des Tables Claudiennes. Turn right, then left onto Montée de la Grande Côte. Once on the terrace, continue straight ahead along Rue des Pierres Blanches to Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse.
(7) Turn right and cross the Parc du Gros Cailloux. At the end of the park (on the left), go down the steps. At the bottom of the steps, take thesecond lane on the right (running horizontally). At the end of the lane, go down the steps onto Rue Mottet de Gerando. Take the street on the right. Go round Place Colbert.
(8) At the bottom of the square, enter No. 9 Place Colbert to cross the Cour des Voraces passageway. Cross the courtyard, go down the steps and exit the building on the right. Then take the wide passageway leading onto Rue Imbert Colomès. Turn right, then left onto Rue Pouteau, then take the second left onto Rue Burdeau.
(9) At No. 30Bis, enter this traboule which joins the Passage Thiaffait and leads out onto Rue René Leynaud. Turn right and, at the end of the street, take the street that descends to the left to Place des Capucins. Cross the square and walk down Rue Sainte-Marie-des-Terreaux. Continue straight on to Place des Terreaux. Admire the Bartholdi Fountain. To the right of the square is the Museum of Fine Arts and opposite is Lyon City Hall.
(10) Walk past Lyon City Hall on the left-hand side, taking Rue du Puits Gaillot. Behind it is the Opera House. Cross Place Louis Pradel diagonally, then cross the Rhône via Pont Morand.
(11) As you leave the bridge, head down to the banks of the Rhône on the right and follow them until you reach the first footbridge, the Passerelle du Collège. Take this footbridge to cross to the other bank. Cross Quai Jean Moulin and take Passage Menestrier opposite. Exit on the right onto Rue de la Bourse. Take the second street on the left, Rue du Bât-d'Argent. Go straight on until you reach Rue du Plâtre, which is opposite the junction with Rue du Président Édouard Herriot.
(12) Enter No. 8 Rue du Plâtre, cross another traboule, pass through the shopping arcade, then continue past the restaurant and straight on to Rue Longue. Turn right, then left, into Rue Pleney. Turn right into Rue de la Fromagerie, then left into Place Saint-Nizier. Continue along Rue de Brest and take thesecond right, Rue Grenette. Follow Quai Saint-Antoine to the left, then continue to Rue du Petit David. Turn left, then left again into Rue de la Monnaie, then left into Rue Mercière. Take thefirst right, Rue Tupin, and go straight on until you reach Rue de la République.
(13) Take this wide street on the right, cross Place de la République and continue to Place Bellecour. Turn left onto Rue de la Barre, then take thesecond right onto Quai Gailleton, and right again to cross Place Antonin Poncet. Continue to Place Bellecour, which is the end of this walk, but not just yet.
(E) Around the middle of the square, turn left onto Rue Victor Hugo. Continue along this street until you reach Place Carnot.
(14) Walk through the gardens and return to the start of the square to turn left onto Rue de Condé. Then takethe first right onto Rue d’Enghien, thenthe third left, going round the town hall ofthe 2nd arrondissement. Take thefirst small street on the right, which leads to the square in front of Saint-Martin-d’Ainay Church. Turn left onto the square and continue straight ahead, passing under the Ainay arch. Walk along the banks of the Saône on the right (left bank) as far as Pont Bonaparte.
(15) Cross the footbridge to reach the Vieux-Lyon district. Continue straight ahead and turn right towards Place St-Jean. Cross Place St-Jean, then go round Saint-Jean Cathedral via Rue Saint-Étienne and Rue Mandelot. Turn right onto Rue de la Bombarde, passing in front of the Palais de Justice.
(16) Turn left onto Rue du Palais de Justice and take thesecond right onto Rue Saint-Jean. Continue along the street, then take thethird left onto Rue de la Fronde. At the end of the street, take the steps next to the Gadagne Museum, Montée du Garillan. At the top of the stairs, turn right onto Montée St-Barthélémy. Take the staircase leading down to the right, just after No. 13. At the bottom of the stairs, turn left onto Rue Juiverie. At the end of the street, you will find yourself at Place de la Gare Saint-Paul.
(17) Turn right twice, then leave Rue François Vernay and follow a small street on the right, Rue Lainerie. Take thefirst left onto Place du Change. Turn right onto Quai Romain Rolland. Continue along the quay to the Palais de Justice.
(16) Turn left onto the Palais de Justice footbridge. At the end of the footbridge, cross the quay and continue straight ahead onto Rue de l’Ancienne Préfecture. Cross Place des Jacobins diagonally, passing its pretty fountain, and turn onto Rue du Président Édouard Herriot at the opposite corner. Continue straight ahead to reach Place Bellecour once more, which now marks the end of the route (E).
