Mazeyrolles walks

A walk through the forest between Monpazier and Villefranche-du-Périgord; very easy on limestone and dirt tracks; very little walking on tarmac roads. Shaded for much of the route, though there may be a few muddy patches in wet weather. Ideal for exploring the forest of southern Périgord.

A short, peaceful route through the beautiful landscape of the Dordogne. You will follow a river, pass under a viaduct and cross a forest full of wildlife – a real change of scenery.

A hike starting from the magnificent bastide town of Monpazier in the south of the Périgord Pourpre. Small paths and chestnut tree undergrowth. The walk is quite long, but the elevation gain is low. Enough to spend a very good afternoon (or morning).

Majestic and imposing, Biron Castle perches on a hill, reigning supreme over the surrounding countryside. This landscape of hills, valleys, woods and fields where cows and horses graze is a haven of peace conducive to meditation.

A mixed walk (forest paths and small roads) around the bastide town of Monpazier. A complete immersion in the undergrowth and in a countryside that has hardly changed in over 50 years. A truly remote spot. Updated at the request of a local resident, the start of this hike has been moved to Saint-Cassien, near the village church.

In ancient times, the Romans improved and expanded the road network. Many of today’s roads follow the route of these ancient tracks! Marminiac was situated on the Roman road linking Périgueux to Cahors. This idyllic walk will take you through unspoilt countryside and, who knows, as you round a sunken lane, you might even come across traces of these ancient roads!

This route takes you to one of the least well-known fortified castles in Lot-et-Garonne, its fortified village and its lush green valley: Gavaudun. It passes through the hamlet of Laurenque and its elegant 12th-century church.You’ll be able to admire the evocative ruins of Saint-Sardos Priory and learn about the legend associated with it.Off the main route, you can visit the village of Saint-Avit, home to the Bernard Palissy Museum (dedicated to the potter, enameller, painter, glassmaker, writer and scholar).

An easy walk whatever the season, very shaded in summer as it runs through woodland, but still manageable in winter. A gentle, unchallenging climb offering views of a landscape typical of southern Périgord: a small valley, woodland of oak and chestnut trees, a stone house with a traditional Périgord roof, a park with a château (not open to visitors) and a small 12th-century church.

Starting from Lake Cazals, this walk will take you on a tour of the hamlet of Luziers.

A route starting from Urval, a typical Périgord village, on the left bank of the Dordogne in the Périgord Noir, between Belvès and Le Buisson de Cadouin. A route, mainly through woodland, with little elevation gain and few tarmac sections. Ideal for families. 

Urval is a small, unassuming village on the edge of the Bergerac–Sarlat road; there are several walking trails, marked in yellow, which are very interesting. This walk features a fairly steep climb at the start, but it’s shaded and leads to a magnificent little hamlet at the end; this is followed by a superb descent with a beautiful view before climbing up the opposite slope and passing in front of the Château de la Poujade (private); the walk ends with a descent towards the village (halfway along the route, there is also the option of taking a more direct route to the village of Urval via the road at the bottom of the valley). This route alternates between footpaths and roads with very little traffic, except perhaps in summer on the section at the bottom of the valley.

A very easy walk around Lake Tourliac, along the Brayssou, a small tributary of the Dropt. Plenty of birds (mallards, teals, wigeons, etc.). It largely follows the contour line along a footpath. As this is a reservoir, the walk is more pleasant in spring, when the lake is full.

Starting from the pretty medieval village of Goujounac, throughout this hike in the Bourian region you will discover the small local heritage: gariottes/cazelles, springs, wells, wash houses and fountains. A hilly area wooded with pine, chestnut and oak trees. You will discover the two hamlets of Touron and Fargou, which bear witness to a rich rural history. The working farm at Touron sells local duck products. To round off your hike, you can quench your thirst at the bar of the hostelry on the village square.

Starting from the village of Gindou, this walk will take you along forest tracks and narrow paths to the valley where the Ourajou river flows.

Hike through varied countryside landscapes between the heights of Cénac and the Céou valley. The route avoids tarmac roads as much as possible, mostly following paths through the woods and combining PR® trails marked in yellow. Beautiful views of Domme and the Céou Valley.

The village of Saint-Avit-Sénieur is built around an old abbey surrounded by rich land and beautiful chestnut groves. There are many hiking trails around the village. This walk is inspired by one of them, but is a little shorter. This means it can easily be done in half a day. The first part follows theGR® trail and takes you through undergrowth and meadows, while the second part mainly follows paved local roads.

Discover the village of Zadkine and its small but significant historical heritage. This route, starting from the superb village of Les Arques, will take you through the landscapes of the Causse, where vineyards have given way to oak trees.

You are now on the signposted interpretive route of the Masse Valley Sensitive Natural Area. During your walk, you will discover remarkable built and natural heritage sites.

Walk in the forest and along sunken paths typical of this region of north-western Lot, starting from the village of Les Arques. Very green landscape in summer, pretty undergrowth in a very wild environment (passing close to only three residences). Most of the walk is off paved roads, on local lanes. Some very pretty views. This walk is marked on the IGN map and is signposted in yellow on the ground.

The walk starts and ends in Puy-l'Évêque, but it passes through many wooded areas and also allows you to discover some natural sites and ancient buildings. A visit to the small church of Martignac, with its magnificent frescoes, is a highlight of the walk. The walk ends with a visit to the old town of Puy-l'Évêque, with views of the Lot. Ideal for a relaxing and gourmet break.

Enjoy discovering the village of Beynac (one of the most beautiful villages in France) and don't hesitate to visit its castle, a jewel of 12th-century military architecture that has been constantly remodelled since then. You will then be able to admire the surrounding countryside of hills, valleys, shady forests, green meadows and typical Périgord houses with their undeniable charm.

A stroll around Domme, through the countryside dotted with hamlets, woods, and walnut trees. At the end of the walk, an itinerary to visit this beautiful village is suggested.

You are in the Valley of the Five Castles, and the route offers splendid views. Starting at the Ruisseau du Treuil stream, you will skirt the Massif de la Bonnat, where oak, hornbeam and boxwood trees flourish, and discover fountains, wash houses and mills.

This short circular loop around La Roque-Gageac offers a return trip with views from the top of the La Roque cliffs and a crossing of the village from east to west.

A short, easy hike between La Roque-Gageac and Castelnaud with beautiful views of the village and the castles of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Beynac and the Dordogne valley. Crossing the stream to reach the viewpoint is optional.

Come and discover this beautiful town with its 19th-century houses along the Dordogne. Then set off among the holm oaks, walking alongside old stone walls, dry stone huts and a wash house, with numerous views of the Dordogne as your guide. At the end of the walk, plan a short trip on a gabarre to admire this town from a different angle.

A short, quick walk starting from La Roque-Gageac through the woodland and away from the crowds during busy periods. It offers some beautiful views of the circular river bend whilst enjoying plenty of shaded sections. The final section takes place in the upper part of the village, right at the foot of the cliff, where you can add to the experience by exploring a unique botanical garden situated around the church and the town hall.

With this walk, you will not only visit Beynac, the famous village clinging to its cliff, with its castle overlooking one of the Dordogne's meanders, but also Cazenac, a quiet little hamlet high up in the valley, with its small church featuring remarkable modern stained glass windows.
