Near Saint-Romain-de-Monpazier

A walk deep in the Périgord Pourpre, near Saint-Romain-de-Monpazier. This easy route, mostly through woodland, takes you on a short circular route through unspoilt countryside in a place that has changed very little over the years. Ideal for children.

Description of the walk

The starting point is at a gravel pit opposite a former quarry on the D26E, just off the road leading from Lolme to Montferrand-du-Périgord; parking is very easy (but completely isolated).

(S/E) Leaving the gravel pit, turn left onto the D26E for about twenty metres, then turn right onto the road towards Montferrand. After a short climb, pass the turn-off for the hamlet of Gaujac on the left and continue to the top of the hill.

(1) Leave the road and take a forest track on the right leading to the hamlet of Le Peyral. At this point, take the access path to this house; it is made of castine. Follow it to reach the tarmac road above Saint-Romain.

(2) Turn right and follow the road downhill to the church at Saint-Romain-de-Monpazier.

(3) Continue straight on to join the D26E.

(4) Turn right onto it and follow it to the gravel pit, where there is a car park (S/E).

Notes

No water sources (there is a spring at the church, but the water is not necessarily safe to drink).
The walk is mostly shaded, but be aware that it can get quite hot in summer.
The entire walk is on tarmac or limestone surfaces; no special footwear is required (although there may be a damp section in winter between point (1) and the hamlet of Le Peyral).

Worth a visit

During the walk, do take a look at the beautiful 12th-century church (unfortunately often closed these days) and the small wash house below.
In the surrounding area, you’ll find several bastides; mainly Monpazier, but also Beaumont-du-Périgord and Molières.

Very pretty walk, lots of forests, certainly pleasant in warm weather.
Not very busy, immersed in nature.
