Champigneul-Champagne walks

Our journey begins in the village of Champigneul-Champagne. This circular walk offers a typical view of the riverbanks. Immerse yourself in the heart of nature, amidst the cheerful song of the great tit, the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze, and the soothing murmur of flowing water. In summer, keep your eyes peeled, as you might be lucky enough to spot the wren, a small passerine bird moving gracefully amongst the riparian woodland.

This is a lovely 21 km hike through vineyards and forests. It follows theGR®141(the old Roman road Via Campaniensis) and theGR®14, which makes it relatively easy to follow. There is no return to the starting point. Leave your cars at Avenay-Val-d'Or station and return by TER train from Rilly-la-Montagne. Although you are following the Camino de Santiago, it is wonderfully peaceful. During the week, apart from one or two foresters, you will only encounter deer.

This three-hour walk will take you to Mont Aigu, where you will have a beautiful view of the plain.

This route leads through vineyards and woods to two of the region’s attractions: the Tour Brisset and the Faux de Verzy. Part of the route is easy as it is signposted, but another part is not, and requires the use of the Visorando app or a map. Without the detour via the Faux de Verzy, the walk is 15 km. Update May 2026: the paths at the end of the route, in the “La plaine d’Ambonnay” area, have been devastated by forestry machinery. They are barely passable, as they are full of water and ruts. You’ll need good shoes and the app to get through. There is a ‘No Entry’ sign at the finish point at the Tour Brisset.

This is a lovely 15 km walk through vineyards and fields, offering beautiful views of the vineyards. Pass by the Château de Saran and the pretty Jardin Humide de Chouilly. Return to Épernay via the famous Avenue de Champagne.

This short route will take you through the vineyards and woods of Mancy to Morangis via Moslins. It is suitable for brisk walking or a short family stroll. There are some steep hills, however, so it is best avoided during heatwaves. Avoid during hunting season.

This route can be completed at a brisk walking pace. It can also be used to reach Aÿ or Dizy from Épernay station, to link up with another walk, for walkers arriving by TER. To do this route from Épernay, do not start at the station if you are travelling by car; instead, head to Aÿ or Dizy, where parking is easy. The best option is to walk there.

This is a short route not really intended for hikers but rather for walkers and visitors who want to enjoy some lovely views and do a bit of sightseeing. It deliberately follows mostly tarmac paths, making it suitable for wet weather and winter. It is therefore best avoided if you’re using walking poles. There are plenty of things to see in Ay, which is a lovely little town.

This route is not strictly speaking a hike; it simply takes you to the monument, which is situated deep in the woods and very difficult to find. Use of the app is strongly recommended, as the stele is off the path and not very visible. This memorial is likely on private land. Please respect the site. It will be of interest to enthusiasts of the First World War.

Located in the Verzy national forest, the Faux de Verzy are well worth a visit! The twisted beech trees and a hollow oak tree will capture your attention. During your hike, you will feel as if you have stepped into the Forest of Brocéliande.

This hike takes us through the vineyards to the picturesque village of Hautvillers, where many Champagne family homes can be found. The Abbey of Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers houses the tomb of the monk Dom Pérignon, who is credited with inventing the Champagne method of winemaking. The Pierre Cheval Park, nestled on the side of a hillside, offers a magnificent view of the village of Hautvillers.

After a good warm-up, you’ll encounter the walk’s only challenging section, which will take you up to the Montagne de Reims plateau, where the rest of the walk is then an easy stroll.

This lovely forest walk in Rilly-la-Montagne is primarily aimed at families and nature lovers looking to stretch their legs on a simple, pleasant route. We did it with a baby in a baby carrier, so it posed no difficulty (though it’s not suitable for pushchairs). [Updated in September 2026 to reflect changes on site as reported in the comments]

Everythird weekend in July, Les Secrets du Petit Bonhomme are given a new twist, allowing you to explore the village of Rilly-la-Montagne via the existingPR79 trail with a few variations. Interesting viewpoints, a link between the forest, the village and the vineyards, and features related to the village’s floral displays. Route available all year round, except in the forest during the hunting season.

This is a long hike through woods and vineyards, accessible by train from the TER stations in Rilly-la-Montagne or Germaine. It is 23 km long, but can be shortened to 18 km by taking the train from Rilly-la-Montagne to Germaine. Its main attractions are the route of remarkable trees and a beautiful view of Reims in good weather.

An easy walk through vineyards and fields.

This hike will take you across the Montagne de Reims along beautiful paths with almost no tarmac. Much of it is marked by the Randonneurs & pèlerins 51 association. You will meet walkers from all over the world, especially Holland and Belgium. The outward or return journey is by TER train between Aÿ station and Rilly-la-Montagne station, where you can park for free. It is accessible from Paris either by TER via Epernay or by TGV via Reims.

In the heart of the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park, come and discover this walk that takes you across both sides of the Courtagnon valley, a small village in Champagne situated at the end of a dead-end road. A touch of mid-mountain atmosphere.

A series of successive steps – sometimes steep but short, separated by less steep sections – will take you to the summit plateau of this part of the Montagne de Reims. After crossing a mix of wide, stony paths and other wilder, sometimes damp sections, you’ll circle the Bois d’Écueil before reaching the paragliding area, then head back down to the starting village to complete your tour of the Chamery cirque.
